Vietnamese đến profiles an endpoint: someone arrives, something reaches a place or limit, or a range extends as far as a boundary. It corresponds variously to English arrive, reach, come to, until, and up to. Those translations are consequences of several related frames, not separate conjugated meanings.
Compare đi Hà Nội “go/travel to Hanoi,” which profiles the journey, with đến Hà Nội lúc tám giờ “arrive in Hanoi at eight,” which profiles reaching the goal. The return/home-oriented uses of về belong to their own reference page.
The endpoint map
| Frame | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| subject + đến + place | arrive/reach | tàu đến ga |
| đến + place + verb | come/go there to do something | đến nhà bạn chơi |
| verb + đến + recipient/place | direct an action toward | gửi thư đến văn phòng |
| từ X đến Y | range from X to Y | từ thứ Hai đến thứ Sáu |
| đến + time/limit | until, as far as, up to | đến cuối tháng |
| đến mức / đến nỗi + clause | reach such a degree that | mệt đến mức ngủ quên |
Tàu đến ga Huế lúc sáu giờ mười lăm.
The train arrives at Hue station at 6:15.
Khi nào bạn đến nơi thì nhắn cho tôi nhé.
Send me a message when you arrive.
Đến nơi is a common collocation meaning “arrive at the destination.” The actual place is understood from context; the expression itself does not guarantee that the trip was safe.
Arrival and reaching a destination
The goal follows đến directly: đến trường, đến sân bay, đến Việt Nam. Unlike English arrive, đến does not require a choice between at and in. Vietnamese instead builds the place expression itself with whatever spatial detail is needed.
Chúng tôi đến khách sạn khá muộn vì chuyến bay bị hoãn.
We arrived at the hotel quite late because the flight was delayed.
Bưu kiện đã đến Đà Nẵng nhưng chưa được giao.
The parcel has reached Da Nang but has not yet been delivered.
With people, đến may be translated as “come” or “go” according to the English speaker’s viewpoint. Vietnamese đến itself foregrounds reaching the named place. If deictic motion toward the speaker is central, lại đây “come here” is a very common command.
Arrival followed by a purpose
A second predicate can state what happens at the goal: đến gặp “come to meet,” đến lấy “come to collect,” đến thăm “come visit.” Vietnamese can juxtapose the motion and purpose predicates without an infinitive marker.
Chiều nay tôi đến văn phòng lấy hồ sơ.
This afternoon I’m coming to the office to collect the documents.
Cuối tuần cô chú đến thăm bà ngoại.
This weekend my aunt and uncle are coming to visit Grandma.
Adding để is possible when purpose needs emphasis, contrast, or a heavier clause: Tôi đến đây để nói rõ một chuyện “I came here to make one matter clear.” It is not obligatorily copied from English to.
A goal after another predicate
After verbs of sending, bringing, spreading, or communicating, đến + noun marks the endpoint: gửi đến khách hàng “send to customers,” mang đến niềm vui “bring joy,” lan đến vùng ven biển “spread to coastal areas.” More specific recipient constructions may use cho, so do not assume the two markers are freely interchangeable.
Nhà xuất bản sẽ gửi sách đến từng trường vào tuần sau.
The publisher will send books to each school next week.
Mùi khói lan đến tận phòng ngủ trên tầng ba.
The smell of smoke spread all the way to the bedroom on the third floor.
Here tận intensifies the remoteness or completeness of the endpoint. Formal writing frequently uses dẫn đến “lead to/result in,” a partly lexicalized causal combination.
Việc thiếu dữ liệu có thể dẫn đến kết luận sai.
A lack of data can lead to an incorrect conclusion. (academic/formal)
Time spans, ranges, and upper limits
In từ X đến Y, đến closes a spatial, temporal, or numerical range. With only the endpoint stated, it can mean “until/up to”: đến mai “until tomorrow” and đến đây “up to here.” Quantity frames require closer attention: có đến mười người normally means “as many as ten people,” presenting ten as notably high, whereas tối đa mười người unambiguously sets a ceiling of “at most ten people.”
Thư viện mở cửa từ tám giờ đến năm giờ chiều.
The library is open from eight in the morning until five in the afternoon.
Tôi sẽ ở đây đến cuối tháng rồi chuyển vào Nam.
I’ll stay here until the end of the month and then move south.
For a maximum quantity, lên đến is common in reports and advertising: giảm giá lên đến 50% “discounts of up to 50%.” It states a ceiling, not a guarantee that every item reaches it.
Đợt mưa này có thể kéo dài đến ba ngày.
This spell of rain may last for up to three days.
Degree and result: đến mức, đến nỗi
The endpoint metaphor extends to intensity. Đến mức + clause/noun phrase means “to the extent/point that”; đến nỗi + clause introduces an often striking consequence. Both are neutral in careful speech and writing, though the surrounding vocabulary determines formality.
Anh ấy bận đến mức quên cả sinh nhật của mình.
He was so busy that he even forgot his own birthday.
Mưa to đến nỗi đường trước nhà ngập gần nửa mét.
It rained so heavily that the road in front of the house flooded to nearly half a meter.
These are not literal journeys. They preserve the abstract logic “the situation reaches a boundary, and a consequence holds beyond it.”
Aspect, negation, and questions
Lexical đến remains unchanged after đã, đang, sẽ, vẫn, and chưa. Đã đến presents arrival as realized; đang đến says the mover is on the way/approaching in context; chưa đến means the endpoint has not yet been reached. Clause-final rồi often announces arrival.
Xe đang đến, bạn xuống sảnh chờ đi.
The car is on its way; go down and wait in the lobby.
Bác sĩ chưa đến; anh vui lòng ngồi chờ một lát.
The doctor hasn’t arrived yet; please sit and wait for a moment.
Negation không đến usually means that a person or event does not/will not come or reach the goal. Questions can ask đến đâu? “reach where/how far,” đến khi nào? “until when,” or use có ... không?.
Ngày mai chị có đến dự buổi họp không?
Will you come attend the meeting tomorrow?
A minimal five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Minh đến văn phòng. | Minh comes/arrives at the office. |
| negative | Minh không đến văn phòng. | Minh does not come to the office. |
| question | Minh đến lúc mấy giờ? | What time does Minh arrive? |
| aspect-marked | Minh đã đến văn phòng rồi. | Minh has arrived at the office. |
| idiomatic collocation | Cuối cùng họ đi đến kết luận. | They finally reached a conclusion. |
A short exchange: going versus arriving
— Bạn đi sân bay bằng gì? — Tôi đi taxi. Nếu không tắc đường thì khoảng bảy giờ tôi đến nơi.
— How are you getting to the airport? — By taxi. If traffic isn’t bad, I’ll arrive at about seven.
The two clauses describe one trip from different angles. Đi taxi selects the means of travel. Đến nơi asserts the anticipated endpoint. Replacing one predicate with the other would discard that contrast.
Register and regional notes
Đến is neutral and nationwide. Tới overlaps with it in many endpoint frames and is especially frequent in southern conversation, although both forms occur across regions and neither belongs exclusively to one region. Formal nationwide prose readily uses đến, especially in ranges and abstract collocations. Maintain the standard spelling đến, with đ and the acute tone on ế.
Tới nơi thì gọi cho má nhé.
Call Mom when you get there. (informal; common in southern speech)
Common Mistakes
1. Copying English arrive with a separate word for at/in. The Vietnamese goal ordinarily follows đến directly.
❌ Chúng tôi đến ở khách sạn lúc mười giờ.
Incorrect for ‘arrived at the hotel’ — ở wrongly turns the goal into a separate locative predicate.
✅ Chúng tôi đến khách sạn lúc mười giờ.
We arrived at the hotel at ten.
2. Using đến as though it were an English infinitive marker. English to before a verb does not express an endpoint and has no automatic Vietnamese equivalent.
❌ Tôi cần đến mua sữa.
Incorrect for ‘I need to buy milk’ — đến wrongly turns infinitival ‘to’ into a motion word.
✅ Tôi cần mua sữa.
I need to buy milk.
3. Treating đến and cho as freely interchangeable recipients. Đến profiles an endpoint; cho commonly marks a beneficiary or recipient in a giving frame.
❌ Tôi mua món quà đến mẹ.
Incorrect — buying for a beneficiary does not use đến.
✅ Tôi mua món quà cho mẹ.
I bought a gift for Mom.
4. Translating ‘reach a decision’ word for word without the conventional frame. Vietnamese normally uses đi đến or the verb quyết định.
❌ Chúng tôi đến một quyết định sau cuộc họp.
Unnatural calque of English ‘reach a decision.’
✅ Chúng tôi đi đến một quyết định sau cuộc họp.
We reached a decision after the meeting.
Key Takeaways
- Đến profiles a reached or projected endpoint; đi profiles travel or departure.
- The same endpoint logic extends to ranges, deadlines, maximum quantities, and degree constructions.
- Purpose predicates can follow a destination directly: đến văn phòng lấy hồ sơ.
- Aspect and negation appear around an unchanged đến; đến rồi commonly announces arrival.
