Vietnamese vào profiles crossing toward the inside of a bounded place, putting something into a container, or entering a period, state, or activity. It can stand as the main motion predicate, follow a manner verb as an inward directional complement, or follow a handling verb to identify the resulting location.
English translations include enter, go in, come in, into, in, and sometimes begin. Those words do not define one universal substitution rule. Vietnamese vào stays unchanged; the construction around it determines the interpretation. Upward motion and change with lên are reserved for their dedicated page.

| Frame | Use | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| subject + vào + bounded place | enter/go into | vào nhà, vào phòng |
| manner verb + vào | move inward | chạy vào, bước vào |
| handling verb + object + vào + container | put/move inside | cho sữa vào tủ lạnh |
| attention/action verb + vào + target | direct toward or into | nhìn vào màn hình |
| vào + time/phase | at or upon entering | vào lúc tám giờ, vào mùa mưa |
| vào + activity/institution | enter or begin participation | vào học, vào làm |
Entering a bounded place
As an independent predicate, vào + place means enter or go inside. The goal usually follows directly: vào nhà, vào phòng, vào viện. English chooses come in or go in according to viewpoint, while Vietnamese can use the same inward-direction predicate.
Ngoài này lạnh lắm, mọi người vào nhà đi.
It’s very cold out here; everyone come inside.
Tôi vừa vào phòng thì điện thoại reo.
I had just entered the room when the phone rang.
A manner verb can precede vào: đi vào “walk/go in,” chạy vào “run in,” bước vào “step into.” Adding the manner verb makes the path more explicit, but bare vào is common when simple entry is enough.
Thấy trời bắt đầu mưa, bọn trẻ chạy vào hiên nhà trú mưa.
When the children saw it starting to rain, they ran onto the porch to shelter from it.
The achieved-entry reading can combine with được: vào được “manage to get in/be allowed in.” This is not an inflection of vào; it is a potential or permission construction.
Không có thẻ nhân viên thì bạn không vào được khu vực này.
Without a staff card, you can’t enter this area.
Moving or putting something inside
With handling verbs, Vietnamese commonly orders the elements as verb + object + vào + container/goal: cho đường vào cà phê “put sugar in the coffee,” bỏ chìa khóa vào túi “put the key in the bag,” đổ nước vào chai “pour water into the bottle.” The choice of the first verb specifies how the object moves.
Bạn bỏ hóa đơn vào phong bì rồi dán lại giúp tôi.
Put the invoice in the envelope and seal it for me.
Cô ấy rót trà vào từng cốc trước khi khách đến.
She poured tea into each cup before the guests arrived.
English often places in immediately after the verb, as in put in the key. Vietnamese normally keeps the object before the inward phrase when both are explicit. With an understood container, cho vào or bỏ vào can stand alone: Cho vào đây “Put it in here.”
After perception or action predicates, vào + target can direct attention or force inward: nhìn vào gương “look in/at the mirror,” đâm vào tường “crash into the wall,” tập trung vào việc học “focus on studying.” These are conventional argument frames; vào does not translate every English at or on.
Đừng chỉ nhìn vào giá; hãy kiểm tra cả chất lượng.
Don’t look only at the price; check the quality too.
Entering a period, phase, or activity
Spatial entry extends naturally to time. Vào lúc + time locates an event “at” that time, and vào + season/period means during or as that period begins: vào mùa mưa, vào cuối năm, vào dịp Tết. Here vào does not describe a person walking anywhere.
Cuộc họp bắt đầu vào lúc chín giờ sáng.
The meeting begins at nine in the morning.
Vào mùa mưa, con đường này thường bị ngập.
During the rainy season, this road often floods.
Institutions and activities can also be conceptualized as domains entered. Vào học means begin a course or school session; vào làm means start working or enter employment; vào đại học means enter university. Bắt tay vào + activity means get down to that activity.
Tháng sau em gái tôi vào đại học.
My younger sister starts university next month.
Uống cà phê xong, chúng tôi bắt tay vào sửa bản thảo.
After finishing our coffee, we got down to revising the manuscript.
These are frame-specific extensions. English enter a competition is usually tham gia cuộc thi, not mechanically vào cuộc thi, although lọt vào vòng chung kết “advance into the final” is a conventional bounded-stage construction.
Aspect, negation, and questions
Time and aspect markers precede the unchanged predicate: đã vào, đang vào, sẽ vào, chưa vào. Ordinary không vào rejects entry; chưa vào says it has not happened yet. In a serial construction, the marker normally scopes over the combination: đang đi vào, đã bỏ vào.
Khách đang đi vào hội trường, mình chuẩn bị bắt đầu nhé.
The guests are entering the hall; let’s get ready to begin.
Sao bạn chưa cất thức ăn vào tủ lạnh?
Why haven’t you put the food in the refrigerator yet?
Questions use vào đâu?, vào lúc mấy giờ?, or có ... vào ... không?. When entry itself is under discussion, vào chưa? is a compact contextual question.
A minimal five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Lan vào phòng họp. | Lan enters the meeting room. |
| negative | Lan không vào phòng họp. | Lan does not enter the meeting room. |
| question | Lan vào phòng họp chưa? | Has Lan entered the meeting room yet? |
| aspect-marked | Lan đang bước vào phòng họp. | Lan is stepping into the meeting room. |
| idiomatic collocation | Lan bắt tay vào việc ngay. | Lan gets down to work immediately. |
A short dialogue: location versus entry
— Anh Nam ở đâu? — Anh ấy đang ở trong kho. — Sao anh ấy vào đó được? — Bảo vệ mở cửa cho anh ấy vào.
— Where is Nam? — He’s in the storeroom. — How was he able to get in there? — The guard opened the door and let him in.
Ở trong kho reports a location. Vào đó được asks about successful or permitted entry, and final cho anh ấy vào expresses allowing him to enter. English uses in in more than one grammatical role; Vietnamese keeps static ở trong separate from dynamic vào.
Register and regional notes
The core constructions are neutral and nationwide. Geography can conventionalize direction: from northern or central viewpoints, vào Nam means go south, and vào Sài Gòn may be used even when no literal enclosure is involved. Conversely, ra Bắc often means go north. These expressions encode an established travel perspective, not a rule that every southern trip requires vào. In formal prose, đi vào phân tích “proceed to analysis” and đưa vào sử dụng “put into use” are common abstract extensions (formal/academic).
Common Mistakes
1. Using dynamic vào for a static location. Use ở trong when nobody is crossing a boundary.
❌ Chìa khóa vào ngăn kéo.
Incorrect for ‘The key is in the drawer’ — vào presents inward motion, not static location.
✅ Chìa khóa ở trong ngăn kéo.
The key is in the drawer.
2. Copying English put-in word order. With both object and goal stated, the object normally precedes vào.
❌ Tôi bỏ vào chiếc túi điện thoại.
Incorrect for ‘I put the phone in the bag’ — the intended object and container are ordered wrongly.
✅ Tôi bỏ điện thoại vào chiếc túi.
I put the phone in the bag.
3. Translating English in before a year with vào automatically. Vietnamese normally states a year directly or uses năm.
❌ Tôi sinh vào 1995.
Unnatural for a simple birth year; this copies English ‘in 1995.’
✅ Tôi sinh năm 1995.
I was born in 1995.
4. Using vào for every English enter. Participation in a competition conventionally uses tham gia.
❌ Tôi vào một cuộc thi viết truyện.
Unnatural for the intended meaning ‘entered a short-story contest.’
✅ Tôi tham gia một cuộc thi viết truyện.
I entered a short-story contest.
Key Takeaways
- Vào presents motion or placement toward the inside of a boundary; ở trong describes static location.
- In handling frames, use verb + object + vào + container.
- Time, institutional, and activity uses extend the image of entering a domain.
- Learn combinations such as bước vào phòng, bỏ đồ vào túi, and bắt tay vào việc, not an English particle equation.
