Ở: Location, Residence, and Progressive Contexts

Vietnamese ở places a person or thing somewhere and can also mean “live,” “stay,” or “remain.” English often inserts a form of be before a location, but Vietnamese normally lets ở itself serve as the predicate: Tôi ở nhà is literally structured “I — be/stay at — home,” with no separate copula.

Ở also appears inside larger clauses, so learners sometimes mistake it for a progressive auxiliary. It is not the equivalent of English be in be working. The progressive marker is đang; ở contributes location or residence. The predicate làm, including “work as,” is covered on the next reference page.

The main frames

FrameMeaningExample
subject + ở + placebe located at/inĐiện thoại ở trên bàn.
person + ở + placelive or stay thereTôi ở Hà Nội.
subject + đang ở + placebe there now / be staying thereAnh đang ở đâu?
ở + place + activitydo an activity at that placeTôi ở nhà làm việc.
ở lại / ở chung / ở trọlexical collocationsCô ấy ở lại thêm một đêm.

The keys are in the drawer on the left.

Gia đình tôi ở Huế, còn tôi đang học ở Thành phố Hồ Chí Minh.

My family lives in Hue, while I’m studying in Ho Chi Minh City.

The duration and context decide whether English translates ở as “be,” “live,” or “stay.” Vietnamese does not require three different predicates for that contrast.

Location of an identifiable person or thing

When the subject is already known, subject + ở + location answers “Where is it?” Location expressions can be simple (ở nhà, “at home”) or internally complex (ở phía sau bưu điện, “behind the post office”). See time–place–manner ordering for the position of larger locative phrases.

Quán cà phê ở đối diện ga tàu, ngay cạnh hiệu sách.

The café is opposite the railway station, right next to the bookstore.

Mẹ đâu rồi? — Mẹ ở ngoài vườn.

Where’s Mom? — She’s out in the garden.

This definite locative pattern contrasts with existential có. Trong phòng có một người introduces “a person”; Người đó ở trong phòng locates “that person.” English uses there is versus is, while Vietnamese uses the opposition between presentational có and locative ở.

💡
Put the location first with có when you are introducing an entity: Trên bàn có một lá thư. Put the known entity first with ở when you are locating it: Lá thư ở trên bàn.

Residence, temporary stays, and living arrangements

With people, ở + place often describes residence. It can be long-term or temporary; the verb itself does not encode permanence. Add a duration, aspect marker, or more specific verb when that distinction matters.

Bố mẹ tôi ở quê, còn hai chị em tôi thuê nhà ở thành phố.

My parents live in our hometown, while my sister and I rent a place in the city.

Tuần này tôi ở khách sạn gần sân bay.

This week I’m staying at a hotel near the airport.

Sống emphasizes living or being alive; ở emphasizes where one resides or stays. Tôi sống ở Hà Nội presents Hanoi as the setting of one’s life. Tôi ở Hà Nội is the ordinary answer to “Where do you live/stay?” Neither is inherently more permanent in every context.

Common residence collocations are ở trọ “live in rented lodging,” ở chung “live together/share accommodation,” ở riêng “live separately/on one’s own,” ở nhờ “stay at someone’s place as a favor,” and ở lại “stay/remain behind.” These combinations are neutral unless context says otherwise.

Mới lên đại học, tôi ở trọ chung với hai người bạn.

When I first started university, I shared rented accommodation with two friends.

Trời mưa lớn quá; hay là bạn ở lại đây tối nay đi.

It’s raining so heavily; why don’t you stay here tonight?

Progressive contexts: what đang ở does and does not mean

Đang precedes a predicate to present a situation as ongoing. Therefore đang ở means “currently be/stay at,” not merely a grammatical shell for another verb.

Tôi đang ở văn phòng; khoảng sáu giờ tôi mới về.

I’m at the office right now; I won’t be home until around six.

Chị ấy đang ở với cô ruột trong lúc sửa nhà.

She is currently staying with her aunt while her house is being renovated.

In Tôi đang ở nhà làm việc, đang can take scope over the whole situation, ở nhà supplies the location, and làm việc names the activity. English says “I’m working at home,” but the Vietnamese clause does not use ở as the auxiliary of working.

Tôi đang ở nhà làm việc nên không tiện nghe máy.

I’m working at home right now, so it isn’t convenient to take a call.

If location is irrelevant, simply say Tôi đang làm việc. The fuller sentence Tôi đang ở nhà và làm việc explicitly coordinates two predicates and may suggest “I am at home and I am working.” Juxtaposition is more compact and natural when the place frames the activity.

Aspect, negation, and questions

Because ở is unchanged, markers locate the state in time: đã ở “stayed/lived,” đang ở “currently be/stay,” sẽ ở “will stay,” từng ở “once lived/stayed,” and vẫn ở “still be/stay.” Clause-final rồi can signal that someone has arrived at a location or that the relevant state now holds, depending on context.

Tôi từng ở Đà Lạt ba năm nên khá quen đường.

I lived in Da Lat for three years, so I know my way around fairly well.

Tháng tới chúng tôi sẽ ở nhà chị Mai vài hôm.

Next month we’ll stay at Mai’s house for a few days.

Negation is không ở for a general or relevant negative and chưa ở for “have not stayed/lived yet” in the appropriate context. Location questions use ở đâu?; polar questions can use có ở ... không?.

Anh Nam không ở đây; anh ấy sang tòa nhà bên cạnh rồi.

Nam isn’t here; he has gone to the building next door.

Bạn có ở gần trường không?

Do you live near the school?

A short dialogue: location changes the interpretation

— Cậu đang làm gì đấy? — Mình đang ở thư viện học bài. — Thế tối nay cậu có ở lại trường không?

— What are you doing? — I’m studying at the library. — So are you staying at school tonight?

In đang ở thư viện học bài, the library is the current setting of studying. In ở lại trường, ở lại is a lexical unit meaning “remain,” so the question is not merely where the speaker is. The complement and the word after ở determine the frame.

Register and regional notes

Ở is neutral and nationwide. Formal notices and administrative prose may prefer tại for “at,” especially before institutional locations: tại trụ sở công ty “at company headquarters.” Tại is not a drop-in replacement for the residence predicate: everyday Tôi ở Hà Nội is natural, while Tôi tại Hà Nội is incomplete outside telegraphic styles.

The core locative frames described here are shared across regions. Accent and some preferred surrounding vocabulary vary, but the standard spelling remains ở, with the horn and hỏi tone; those pronunciation differences do not change its syntactic role.

Buổi làm việc sẽ diễn ra tại trụ sở ủy ban.

The working session will take place at the committee headquarters. (formal)

Common Mistakes

1. Adding là before an ordinary location. Là classifies or identifies; ở locates.

❌ Nhà tôi là ở gần chợ.

Incorrect as a neutral location statement — là is unnecessary.

✅ Nhà tôi ở gần chợ.

My house is near the market.

2. Treating ở as the Vietnamese equivalent of progressive be. Use đang to mark an ongoing activity.

❌ Tôi ở làm việc.

Incorrect for ‘I am working’ — ở needs a location or a licensed collocation.

✅ Tôi đang làm việc.

I am working.

3. Introducing an indefinite entity with the definite locative frame. Use có to present its existence.

❌ Một hiệu thuốc ở gần đây.

Incomplete as the ordinary answer ‘There is a pharmacy nearby.’

✅ Gần đây có một hiệu thuốc.

There is a pharmacy nearby.

4. Using locative ở to express origin. A current location and a place of origin use different frames.

❌ Tôi ở từ Canada.

Incorrect — ở cannot combine with từ to calque English ‘be from.’

✅ Tôi đến từ Canada.

I come from Canada.

Key Takeaways

  • Ở is a locative predicate; it does not need an extra word meaning “be.”
  • The same form covers location, residence, and temporary staying; context and aspect markers supply the time profile.
  • Đang ở + place + activity locates an ongoing activity. Ở is not itself the progressive auxiliary.
  • Contrast place + có + new entity with known entity + ở + place.
