Vietnamese qua presents movement across, past, or through a boundary. That boundary may be physical (qua đường “cross the street”), temporal (qua Tết “after/once Tet has passed”), social (qua nhà bạn “stop by a friend’s house”), or experiential (trải qua một giai đoạn khó khăn “go through a difficult period”). The stable idea is transition from one side or phase to another.
English distributes these uses across cross, pass, come over, through, via, and after. Vietnamese does not conjugate qua to select among them. Its position and complements do the work. This page maps those constructions; return and repetition with lại belong on the dedicated lại page.
A construction map for qua
| Frame | Typical meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| qua + boundary/place | cross, pass, go via | qua cầu, qua Huế |
| verb + qua | move across/past; get through | chạy qua, vượt qua |
| qua + person/place | go over, stop by | qua nhà chị Lan |
| qua + time/event | once a period has passed; after | qua cuối tuần, qua Tết |
| trải qua + event/period | undergo, live through | trải qua ca phẫu thuật |
| qua + channel/intermediary | through, via, by means of | qua email, qua người quen |
Crossing, passing, and going via
With a physical boundary, qua + noun often means “cross”: qua đường, qua sông, qua cầu. With a place on a route, it means “pass through/by” or “go via.” The same place can therefore be a path rather than the final destination.
Muốn đến bến xe, bạn phải qua cây cầu nhỏ phía trước.
To get to the bus station, you have to cross the small bridge ahead.
Chuyến tàu này đi qua Huế nhưng không dừng lâu.
This train passes through Hue but does not stop for long.
The moving predicate may precede qua: đi qua “go past/through,” chạy qua “run across,” bay qua “fly over.” Bare qua is possible when the manner is irrelevant. Adding a first verb makes the manner or event type explicit; it is not a conjugated tense of qua.
Tôi nhìn thấy Nam chạy qua đường lúc đèn đang đỏ.
I saw Nam run across the street while the light was red.
Vượt qua is a conventional compound meaning “overcome/get past,” both literally and metaphorically. Its first element vượt contributes surpassing an obstacle, so it is stronger than bare qua.
Cả đội đã vượt qua vòng đầu sau một trận đấu rất căng thẳng.
The whole team made it through the first round after a very tense match.
Stopping by and transfer across a channel
In everyday conversation, qua + someone’s place often means “go/come over” or “stop by.” The deictic direction comes from the situation, not from a different form of qua. English must choose come over or go over according to viewpoint; Vietnamese can simply use qua.
Tối nay rảnh thì qua nhà mình ăn cơm nhé.
If you’re free tonight, come over to my place for dinner.
Trên đường về, tôi qua hiệu thuốc mua thuốc cho mẹ.
On the way home, I’ll stop by the pharmacy to buy medicine for Mom.
With a communication channel or intermediary, qua means “through/via”: gửi qua email, đặt qua ứng dụng, biết nhau qua một người bạn. The noun after qua is the route by which something happens, not its recipient.
Bạn gửi hợp đồng qua email cho tôi trước chiều mai nhé.
Please send me the contract by email before tomorrow afternoon.
Chúng tôi quen nhau qua một người bạn chung.
We met through a mutual friend.
This distinction matters with cho: in gửi tài liệu qua email cho chị, qua email names the channel and cho chị names the recipient.
Time passing and experiential transition
Before a calendar point or event, qua can set a boundary after which something will hold: qua Tết, qua tháng này, qua mùa mưa. Context supplies the exact English rendering, commonly “after” or “once ... is over.”
Qua đợt mưa này, chúng tôi sẽ sửa lại mái nhà.
Once this spell of rain is over, we’ll repair the roof.
For lived experience, the established frame is trải qua + event/period, not an invented conjugation. Trải qua presents the subject as undergoing an extended process, especially a difficult or consequential one. Bare qua can also occur in compact expressions such as qua cơn nguy kịch “get past the critical stage,” where crossing the boundary is foregrounded.
Bà đã trải qua hai cuộc phẫu thuật trong năm nay.
She has undergone two operations this year.
Sau một đêm theo dõi, bệnh nhân đã qua cơn nguy kịch.
After a night of observation, the patient is now past the critical stage.
Do not use qua as the general marker of “have ever.” Vietnamese normally uses từng for life experience: Tôi từng đến Đà Lạt “I have been to Da Lat.” Trải qua instead selects an event or phase that someone undergoes. See từng and past experience.
Aspect, negation, and questions
Qua itself does not change. Markers such as đã, đang, sẽ, and chưa locate or frame the crossing event: đã qua cầu, đang qua đường, sẽ qua nhà, chưa qua vòng đầu. With a punctual boundary crossing, đang qua focuses the movement in progress; with a result, đã qua asserts that the boundary has been passed.
Đừng gọi bây giờ; chị ấy đang qua cửa kiểm tra an ninh.
Don’t call now; she is going through the security checkpoint.
Hồ sơ của anh chưa qua bước xét duyệt cuối cùng.
Your application has not yet passed the final review stage.
Ordinary negation is không qua; questions use có ... qua ... không?, qua đâu?, or a context-specific question word. With the visiting sense, Bạn có qua không? asks whether the person will come/go over.
A minimal five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Tôi qua cầu. | I cross the bridge. |
| negative | Tôi không qua cầu. | I do not cross the bridge. |
| question | Bạn có qua nhà Mai không? | Are you going over to Mai’s place? |
| aspect-marked | Xe đã qua trạm thu phí rồi. | The car has passed the toll station. |
| idiomatic collocation | Chúng ta sẽ vượt qua khó khăn này. | We will overcome this difficulty. |
A route changes the interpretation
— Sao cậu chưa đến? — Mình đang đi qua trung tâm nên bị kẹt xe. Qua ngã tư này mình sẽ gọi lại.
— Why aren’t you here yet? — I’m going through downtown, so I’m stuck in traffic. Once I’m past this intersection, I’ll call back.
The first qua marks downtown as the route, not the destination. The second presents the intersection as a boundary. Gọi lại contains lại, not another sense of qua: it means “call back/again.”
Register and lexicalized expressions
The core uses are neutral and nationwide. Qua đời “pass away” is a respectful neutral/formal euphemism for dying; its meaning is lexicalized and should not be built word by word. Thông qua means “through/by means of” and, in formal institutional language, “approve/adopt”: thông qua nghị quyết “adopt a resolution.” Hôm qua “yesterday” is a fixed time word and is not productively analyzed as the motion predicate in ordinary use.
Thông báo được gửi đến nhân viên thông qua hệ thống nội bộ.
The notice was sent to employees through the internal system. (formal)
Common Mistakes
1. Treating qua as a general past marker. Crossing a time boundary does not make qua equivalent to English past tense.
❌ Tôi qua ăn sáng lúc bảy giờ.
Incorrect — qua cannot mark the simple past of ‘eat.’
✅ Tôi ăn sáng lúc bảy giờ.
I ate breakfast at seven.
2. Choosing a channel expression for a lived experience. Thông qua means “through/by means of” or “approve”; a difficult period is conventionally something one trải qua.
❌ Gia đình tôi đã thông qua một giai đoạn rất khó khăn.
Incorrect for ‘went through a difficult period’ — thông qua treats what follows as a channel or something approved.
✅ Gia đình tôi đã trải qua một giai đoạn rất khó khăn.
My family went through a very difficult period.
3. Confusing a channel with a recipient. Qua marks the route; cho marks the intended recipient.
❌ Tôi gửi báo cáo qua giám đốc.
Wrong if the director is the recipient rather than an intermediary.
✅ Tôi gửi báo cáo qua email cho giám đốc.
I sent the report by email to the director.
4. Adding an English-style preposition after qua. The crossed place normally follows qua directly.
❌ Chúng tôi qua trên cầu để sang bờ bên kia.
Unnatural for simple bridge crossing — trên wrongly recasts the bridge as a static location.
✅ Chúng tôi qua cầu để sang bờ bên kia.
We crossed the bridge to get to the other side.
Key Takeaways
- Qua profiles a route or transition across a physical, temporal, social, or abstract boundary.
- Trải qua is the conventional frame for undergoing an experience; từng marks whether an experience has ever occurred.
- A following channel is not a recipient: qua email cho Lan means “by email to Lan.”
- Learn whole frames and collocations; qua has no conjugated forms that correspond one-to-one with English verbs.
