Vietnamese xuống profiles motion toward a lower point, getting off a vehicle, placing something downward, decreasing on a scale, or settling into a weaker state. It can stand as a motion predicate, follow a manner or handling verb as a directional complement, or combine with a noun or state predicate to express downward change.
English may translate xuống as go down, come down, get off, put down, fall, decrease, or calm down. Those translations do not license the same objects and particles. Vietnamese leaves xuống unchanged and distinguishes the readings through construction and context. Crossing, passage, and experiential qua are handled on their dedicated page.
Choose a frame
| Frame | Use | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| subject + xuống + lower goal | go/come down | xuống tầng một, xuống bếp |
| manner verb + xuống | downward path | chạy xuống, leo xuống |
| xuống + vehicle | get off/out of | xuống xe, xuống tàu |
| handling verb + object + xuống | place or move downward | đặt cốc xuống, hạ rèm xuống |
| quantity noun + xuống | fall or decrease | giá xuống, nhiệt độ xuống |
| state predicate + xuống | become less intense or settle | dịu xuống, lắng xuống |
Descending to a lower place
As a main predicate, xuống takes a lower destination: xuống tầng một “go down to the first floor,” xuống bếp “go down to the kitchen,” xuống núi “descend the mountain.” The relevant height can come from the building, landscape, or discourse viewpoint.
Tôi xuống sảnh đón khách, năm phút nữa quay lại.
I’m going down to the lobby to meet the guests; I’ll be back in five minutes.
Trời sắp tối rồi, đoàn mình nên xuống núi sớm.
It’s getting dark; our group should come down the mountain early.
A manner verb can precede the direction: đi xuống, chạy xuống, bò xuống, leo xuống. The first predicate specifies how the movement occurs; xuống gives its path.
Nghe tiếng gọi, cô bé chạy xuống cầu thang.
Hearing the call, the girl ran down the stairs.
Vietnamese also conventionalizes xuống xe, xuống tàu, and xuống máy bay for getting off or out of a vehicle. The contrast is with lên xe/tàu/máy bay “board.” English changes prepositions according to vehicle type; Vietnamese uses the same downward predicate across these common frames.
Bạn xuống xe ở trạm tiếp theo rồi đi bộ khoảng hai trăm mét.
Get off at the next stop and then walk about two hundred meters.
Moving or placing something downward
After a handling verb, xuống identifies a downward movement or resulting lower position: đặt xuống “put down,” hạ xuống “lower,” kéo xuống “pull down,” mang xuống “carry down.” When an object is explicit, it usually follows the first verb: đặt điện thoại xuống bàn, mang vali xuống nhà.
Xin vui lòng đặt hành lý xuống sàn để lối đi được thông thoáng.
Please put your luggage down on the floor so the aisle remains clear. (formal)
Anh giúp em mang chiếc ghế này xuống dưới được không?
Could you help me carry this chair downstairs?
Final xuống may be enough when the lower surface or direction is obvious: Ngồi xuống đi “Sit down.” Here ngồi xuống presents movement into a seated position; bare ngồi can describe either the activity or the state of sitting.
Bà cứ ngồi xuống nghỉ một lát, để cháu lấy nước.
Please sit down and rest for a moment; I’ll get you some water.
Falling quantities and lower values
With prices, temperatures, levels, and numbers, xuống describes a fall on a scale. Everyday speech commonly uses giá xuống, nhiệt độ xuống, mực nước xuống; formal reports often prefer explicit giảm “decrease.”
Sau đợt cao điểm, giá vé máy bay đã xuống đáng kể.
After the peak period, airfares fell considerably.
Đêm nay nhiệt độ có thể xuống dưới mười độ.
Tonight the temperature may fall below ten degrees.
Xuống còn + value highlights the resulting lower value: giảm xuống còn năm phần trăm “decrease to five percent.” Xuống dưới + threshold means fall below it. To express an agent deliberately lowering something, Vietnamese normally adds an agentive verb such as giảm, hạ, or cắt rather than treating scalar xuống as freely transitive.
Ngân hàng đã hạ lãi suất xuống còn sáu phần trăm.
The bank lowered the interest rate to six percent. (formal)
States becoming weaker or settling
Some property and event predicates combine with xuống to present decreasing intensity or settling, especially dịu xuống “ease/soften,” lắng xuống “subside,” and hạ xuống “lower.” These are change-of-state constructions, not comparisons. The pattern is lexical rather than automatic: Vietnamese normally uses chậm lại for “slow down” and yếu đi for “weaken,” not mechanical combinations such as chậm xuống or yếu xuống.
Đến chiều, gió dịu xuống nên tàu có thể rời bến.
By afternoon, the wind eased, so the boat was able to leave the harbor.
Mọi người im lặng chờ tiếng ồn ngoài phố lắng xuống.
Everyone waited quietly for the noise in the street to subside.
The pattern is not completely productive. English calm down is often bình tĩnh lại for a person and dịu/lắng xuống for a situation. English write down is usually ghi lại or viết ra, not automatically viết xuống. Whole collocations outrank the English particle.
Anh bình tĩnh lại rồi kể cho tôi nghe chuyện gì đã xảy ra.
Calm down, then tell me what happened.
Aspect, negation, and questions
Aspect and time markers precede the construction: đã xuống, đang xuống, sẽ xuống, chưa xuống. With scalar change, đang xuống reports an ongoing decline and chưa xuống says the expected fall has not occurred. Ordinary không xuống rejects descent, getting off, or reduction according to the frame.
Nước sông đang xuống nhưng khu vực này vẫn còn ngập.
The river level is falling, but this area is still flooded.
Sao đến trạm rồi mà anh chưa xuống xe?
Why haven’t you gotten off the bus even though we’ve reached the stop?
Questions include xuống đâu?, xuống ở trạm nào?, có xuống không?, and scalar xuống bao nhiêu?.
A minimal five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Hà xuống tầng một. | Ha goes down to the first floor. |
| negative | Hà không xuống tầng một. | Ha does not go down to the first floor. |
| question | Hà xuống bằng thang máy à? | Is Ha going down by elevator? |
| aspect-marked | Hà đang đi xuống cầu thang. | Ha is walking down the stairs. |
| idiomatic collocation | Hà xuống xe ở bến cuối. | Ha gets off at the final stop. |
A short dialogue: downward motion and lower values
— Nhiệt độ xuống rồi đấy, em mang áo khoác chưa? — Em để ở trên phòng. Chị chờ một chút, em chạy lên lấy rồi xuống ngay.
— The temperature has dropped; did you bring a jacket? — I left it upstairs. Wait a moment; I’ll run up to get it and come right back down.
The first xuống describes a scalar decrease. The final xuống traces physical descent. The same form is possible because both constructions organize change toward a lower point, but their arguments and contexts are different.
Register and regional notes
Core xuống uses are neutral and nationwide. Geographic phrases such as xuống miền Tây or xuống Hải Phòng may reflect the speaker’s starting point, river direction, elevation, and conventional local perspective rather than literal vertical descent. Do not infer a fixed compass meaning. In formal and academic prose, giảm xuống còn, hạ xuống mức, and suy giảm may provide more precise quantitative relations than conversational bare xuống.
Common Mistakes
1. Using xuống for static downstairs location. Motion xuống and location ở dưới are different constructions.
❌ Nhà vệ sinh xuống tầng một.
Incorrect for ‘The restroom is downstairs on the first floor’ — this presents descent rather than location.
✅ Nhà vệ sinh ở tầng một, ngay dưới sảnh này.
The restroom is on the first floor, directly below this lobby.
2. Copying English down in write down. Vietnamese normally uses ghi lại when the point is recording information.
❌ Bạn viết xuống số điện thoại của tôi nhé.
Unnatural calque of ‘write down my phone number.’
✅ Bạn ghi lại số điện thoại của tôi nhé.
Write down my phone number.
3. Using a bare transitive xuống for an agentive decrease. Add giảm/hạ when an institution actively lowers a rate.
❌ Ngân hàng xuống lãi suất sáu phần trăm.
Incorrect for ‘the bank lowered the interest rate to six percent.’
✅ Ngân hàng hạ lãi suất xuống còn sáu phần trăm.
The bank lowered the interest rate to six percent.
4. Translating get off with ra. The conventional vehicle frame is xuống + vehicle.
❌ Tôi ra xe buýt ở trạm Bưu điện.
Incorrect for ‘I get off the bus at the Post Office stop.’
✅ Tôi xuống xe buýt ở trạm Bưu điện.
I get off the bus at the Post Office stop.
Key Takeaways
- Xuống connects physical descent, getting off, scalar decrease, and weakening intensity.
- After another predicate it supplies downward direction: chạy xuống, đặt xuống, mang xuống.
- Static “below/downstairs” uses ở dưới or another locative expression, not dynamic xuống.
- English phrasal particles are unreliable guides; learn frames such as xuống xe, giá xuống, and lắng xuống as constructions.
