Vietnamese lại links several highly frequent constructions. As a motion element, it can mean “come back/approach”: lại đây “come here.” After a predicate, it commonly means “again” or “back”: đọc lại “read again,” gửi lại “send back.” In resultative combinations such as giữ lại and đóng lại, it contributes retention or restoring a closed state. In responsive actions such as hỏi lại or đáp lại, it signals a counter-move directed back at an earlier action.
English often uses separate words—come, return, again, back, keep, or a verb particle—so a dictionary gloss cannot predict the Vietnamese frame. Position and the lexical partner matter. Endpoint meanings of tới are treated on the tới page, not here.
The main construction map
| Frame | Core contribution | Example |
|---|---|---|
| lại + place/person | approach, come toward | lại đây, lại gần tôi |
| quay/trở + lại | return to an earlier place/state | quay lại văn phòng |
| verb + lại | do again; do back | đọc lại, gọi lại |
| verb + lại | retain, stop, or restore a result | giữ lại, dừng lại, đóng lại |
| responsive verb + lại | counteraction toward the source | hỏi lại, đáp lại |
| còn + lại | remain; be left | phần còn lại |
Motion toward and return to a reference point
Bare lại before a place expression is clearest in directives such as lại đây “come here” and lại gần “come closer.” It indicates approach toward the speaker or another salient reference point. This is a deictic use: English chooses come because the endpoint is the speaker’s location.
Lại đây xem tấm ảnh này đi, đẹp lắm.
Come here and look at this photo; it’s beautiful.
Con đừng lại gần bếp, nồi đang nóng.
Don’t come near the stove; the pot is hot.
For an explicit return, Vietnamese commonly combines lại with quay or trở: quay lại and trở lại. Quay lại is frequent in conversation and can suggest turning back; trở lại is neutral and especially common in careful or formal prose. Về has a stronger homeward or return-to-base perspective, explained on the về page.
Đi được nửa đường, tôi phải quay lại lấy ví.
Halfway there, I had to turn back to get my wallet.
Sau ba tháng sửa chữa, thư viện đã mở cửa trở lại.
After three months of renovation, the library has reopened. (neutral/formal)
Repetition: verb + lại
After an action predicate, lại often directs the event back over the same ground: “again.” Đọc lại, nói lại, làm lại, and thử lại are productive. Unlike English, Vietnamese places this repetitive element after the lexical predicate.
Tôi nghe không rõ; bạn nói lại chậm hơn được không?
I didn’t hear clearly; could you say it again more slowly?
Bài này sai hai chỗ, em làm lại nhé.
There are two mistakes in this exercise; do it again, okay?
Repetition can coexist with aspect marking: đã đọc lại “has reread,” đang xem lại “is reviewing/watching again,” sẽ thử lại “will try again.” The aspect marker comes before the predicate complex; lại stays after the predicate.
Tôi đang xem lại lịch hẹn để chắc là mình không nhầm ngày.
I’m checking the appointment schedule again to make sure I have the right date.
Back-transfer and responsive counterdirection
With transfer or communication predicates, lại may mean “back” rather than merely “again.” Gửi lại can mean “send back” or “resend”; trả lại means “return [something]”; gọi lại can mean “call back.” The surrounding objects and situation resolve the ambiguity.
Tôi đã ký xong; chiều nay tôi gửi lại hợp đồng cho chị.
I’ve signed it; I’ll send the contract back to you this afternoon.
Máy bận rồi; lát nữa tôi gọi lại cho anh ấy.
The line is busy; I’ll call him back later.
In hỏi lại, đáp lại, and cãi lại, an action is directed back toward a prior speaker or stimulus. Register matters: cãi lại often implies talking back and can sound disapproving, especially from an elder to a child. Đáp lại is neutral/formal “respond in return.”
Cô ấy chỉ mỉm cười thay vì đáp lại lời chỉ trích.
She only smiled instead of responding to the criticism. (neutral/formal)
Retention, stopping, and restored states
Some verb + lại combinations are result constructions, not repetition. Giữ lại means “keep/retain,” để lại “leave behind,” dừng lại “stop,” đóng lại “close [again/back up],” and buộc lại “tie back/up.” The lexical verb determines what state is reached.
Những giấy tờ gốc này anh giữ lại, chỉ nộp bản sao thôi.
Keep these original documents; submit only the copies.
Gió mạnh quá, bạn đóng cửa sổ lại giúp mình nhé.
The wind is very strong; please close the window for me.
Here đóng lại can imply restoring the closed state, but it need not mean that the same person literally performs the action for a second time. That is why translating every postverbal lại as again fails.
Aspect, negation, and questions
Lại never inflects. In motion use, đã quay lại, đang trở lại, and sẽ quay lại locate the return. In repetition, negation normally precedes the predicate: không làm lại “not do again.” Chưa gọi lại means “has not called back/yet.”
Anh ấy chưa trả lại chìa khóa cho lễ tân.
He hasn’t returned the key to reception yet.
Nếu sửa không được, mình có phải làm lại từ đầu không?
If it can’t be fixed, do we have to start over?
Do not confuse postverbal lại with preverbal discourse lại in a sentence such as Sao anh lại quên nữa? “Why did you go and forget again?” That preverbal use can express recurrence, surprise, or counterexpectation and has wider scope. At A2, learn common frames first rather than assuming every placement is interchangeable.
A minimal five-way contrast
| Function | Vietnamese | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| affirmative | Tôi quay lại văn phòng. | I return to the office. |
| negative | Tôi không quay lại văn phòng. | I do not return to the office. |
| question | Bạn có muốn nghe lại không? | Do you want to listen again? |
| aspect-marked | Tôi đã gửi lại hồ sơ rồi. | I have sent the application back/resubmitted it. |
| idiomatic collocation | Hẹn gặp lại! | See you again! |
A short dialogue: again or back?
— Khách hàng bảo bản scan bị mờ. — Vậy cậu scan lại rồi gửi lại cho họ nhé. — Được, mình sẽ gọi lại để xác nhận luôn.
— The customer says the scan is blurry. — Then scan it again and send it back to them. — Okay, I’ll call back to confirm as well.
The first lại clearly repeats the scanning. The second can be understood as resending/back-transfer, and the third is a responsive call. English chooses three different phrasings; Vietnamese uses the same directional logic with different predicates.
Register and regional notes
The constructions above are nationwide. Trở lại often sounds more neutral/formal than conversational quay lại, especially in announcements and writing: hoạt động trở lại “resume operation.” Hẹn gặp lại is the ordinary set leave-taking formula. The spelling distinction is essential: lại has a dot-below tone; lai without the tone is a different word in compounds such as con lai “person/animal of mixed parentage.”
Common Mistakes
1. Placing repetitive lại before the lexical verb by copying English ‘again.’ In the basic productive pattern, it follows the verb.
❌ Tôi lại đọc email để kiểm tra địa chỉ.
Wrong for the intended neutral ‘I read the email again’ — preverbal lại adds discourse scope and may suggest recurrence or surprise.
✅ Tôi đọc lại email để kiểm tra địa chỉ.
I reread the email to check the address.
2. Translating every verb + lại as ‘verb again.’ Resultative combinations have their own established meanings.
❌ Bác sĩ bảo tôi dừng lại thuốc này.
Incorrect — dừng lại means stop moving/acting; it does not take the medicine as an object in this frame.
✅ Bác sĩ bảo tôi ngừng dùng thuốc này.
The doctor told me to stop taking this medicine.
3. Using về when the intended command is ‘come here.’ Về suggests return/homeward direction; lại đây marks approach to the speaker.
❌ Về đây ngồi cạnh tôi.
Misleading unless the person is returning here as a base or home.
✅ Lại đây ngồi cạnh tôi.
Come here and sit next to me.
4. Assuming gửi lại is unambiguous without context. State the object or situation when “resend” versus “send back” matters.
❌ Tôi gửi lại.
Too context-dependent if the listener must know what is being resent or returned.
✅ File bị lỗi nên tôi sẽ gửi lại bản mới.
The file is corrupted, so I’ll send a new copy instead.
Key Takeaways
- Before a place, lại can mark approach; with quay/trở, it forms an explicit return construction.
- After an action predicate, lại commonly means “again” or “back,” but established result combinations must be learned as frames.
- Communication predicates often give lại a responsive, counterdirectional reading.
- Aspect and negation surround the predicate complex; lại itself never conjugates.
