Thai หา is an invariant verb with a family of related constructions. On its own before an object, it usually presents an attempt to locate or obtain: หากุญแจ “look for the key,” หาข้อมูล “seek information.” With money or income, it means earn or procure. After motion or communication verbs, it can direct the event toward a person: ไปหาแม่ “go see Mother,” โทรหาลูกค้า “call the customer.”
English find often packages both search and successful discovery. Thai commonly separates them: หา presents the search, while เจอ, พบ, or a result combination such as หาเจอ presents success. This distinction is the organizing idea of the page.
Searching for an entity or answer
The object sought follows หา directly. No preposition equivalent to English for is required.
| Frame | Goal of the search | Natural model |
|---|---|---|
| หา + person/thing | locate an entity | หากุญแจ / หาเจ้าของ |
| หา + information/answer | discover needed content | หาข้อมูล / หาคำตอบ |
| หา + opportunity/time/way | secure an abstract resource | หาเวลา / หาโอกาส / หาทาง |
| หา + object + เจอ | search reaches discovery | หากระเป๋าเจอ |
| หา + object + ไม่เจอ | search fails to reach discovery | หาเอกสารไม่เจอ |
ฉันกำลังหากุญแจรถอยู่ค่ะ
chan kamlang ha kunchae rot yu kha
I'm looking for the car key. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; search in progress)
ผมหาข้อมูลเรื่องรถไฟเที่ยวสุดท้ายในเว็บไซต์ครับ
phom ha khomun rueang rotfai thiao sutthai nai wepsai khrap
I'm looking up information about the last train on the website. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
เราต้องหาทางลดค่าใช้จ่ายโดยไม่ลดพนักงานค่ะ
rao tong ha thang lot kha chai chai doi mai lot phanak ngan kha
We need to find a way to reduce costs without cutting staff. (formal-polite workplace speech, female speaker; abstract solution)
The last two objects are not literally hidden items. หา extends productively from physical search to securing information, time, an opportunity, a solution, or a suitable person. ค้นหา is a more explicit “search” expression, common in interfaces and careful writing; it does not make ordinary หา incorrect.
Search versus successful discovery
หาเจอ joins the search and its successful result. หาไม่เจอ says the subject searched but failed to locate the object. ไม่ได้หา instead denies that a search occurred. หาไม่ได้ can say that obtaining or locating something is impossible, but context must identify what kind of impossibility is meant.
ฉันหากุญแจเจอแล้วค่ะ อยู่ใต้เบาะรถ
chan ha kunchae choe laeo kha yu tai bo rot
I've found the key; it was under the car seat. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; search reaches discovery)
ผมหาใบเสร็จไม่เจอครับ อาจทิ้งไว้ที่ร้าน
phom ha bai set mai choe khrap at thing wai thi ran
I can't find the receipt; I may have left it at the shop. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; failed search)
เมื่อเช้าผมไม่ได้หาเอกสารครับ เพราะคิดว่าอยู่บนโต๊ะ
muea chao phom mai dai ha ekkasan khrap phro khit wa yu bon to
I didn't look for the document this morning because I thought it was on the desk. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; search denied)
รุ่นนี้หาซื้อไม่ได้แล้วค่ะ โรงงานเลิกผลิตไปนานแล้ว
run ni ha sue mai dai laeo kha rongngan loek phalit pai nan laeo
This model can no longer be found for purchase; the factory stopped making it long ago. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker; availability denied)
หาซื้อ means seek with the aim of buying; หาอ่าน “seek out to read” and หาดู “look for and view/check” follow the same purposive ordering. The second predicate is unchanged, not an infinitive.
Earning, procuring, and making a living
With money, income, or livelihood expressions, หา means obtain through effort or earn. หาเงิน normally means earn or raise money, not merely search the floor for banknotes. หารายได้ is neutral to formal, while หากิน is a common lexical combination whose register and tone depend on context.
พี่สาวฉันทำงานพิเศษเพื่อหาเงินค่าเรียนค่ะ
phi sao chan tham ngan phiset phuea ha ngoen kha rian kha
My older sister works part-time to earn money for tuition. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ครอบครัวนี้หารายได้จากการขายอาหารเช้าครับ
khropkhrua ni ha raidai chak kan khai ahan chao khrap
This family earns income by selling breakfast. (formal-neutral report, male speaker)
เขาต้องหาเงินเลี้ยงลูกสองคนค่ะ
khao tong ha ngoen liang luk song khon kha
She has to earn money to support two children. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
| Combination | Usual meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| หาเงิน | earn or raise money | neutral |
| หารายได้ | earn income | neutral to formal |
| หากิน | make a living; seek food | informal to neutral; context-sensitive |
| หางาน | look for work | neutral |
| หาทาง | find/seek a way | neutral |
| หาเรื่อง | provoke trouble / pick a quarrel | informal, often negative |
หาเรื่อง is lexical: it usually means provoke trouble, not neutrally search for a topic. Register and construction must therefore be learned with the combination, rather than derived from the broad gloss “look for.”
Toward a person: ไปหา, มาหา, and โทรหา
After motion or communication, หา + person can mark the animate goal. ไปหาแม่ commonly means go to see Mother; มาหาเพื่อน means come to see a friend; วิ่งมาหาเรา presents motion toward us; โทรหาหมอ means call the doctor.
เย็นนี้ผมจะไปหาคุณยายครับ
yen ni phom cha pai ha khun yai khrap
This evening I'll go see Grandmother. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; visit goal)
พอเลิกเรียน เด็กก็วิ่งมาหาแม่ค่ะ
pho loek rian dek ko wing ma ha mae kha
When school ended, the child ran over to Mother. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; motion toward a person)
ถ้าอาการแย่ลง ให้โทรหาหมอทันทีครับ
tha akan yae long hai tho ha mo thanthi khrap
If the symptoms worsen, call the doctor immediately. (polite medical instruction, male speaker; contact goal)
The same surface string can remain context-sensitive. ไปหาแม่ usually describes a visit or directed movement, but in a situation where Mother is missing it can mean “go look for Mother.” The motion verb, discourse, and likely purpose decide. The ไป/มา reference explains the deictic part of the sequence.
The unchanged headword in different environments
| Environment | Thai pattern | What supplies the interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| past context | เมื่อวานผมหาห้องเช่า | เมื่อวาน locates the search earlier |
| ongoing search | ฉันกำลังหาที่จอดรถ | กำลัง presents the activity in progress |
| result achieved | เขาหางานได้แล้ว | ได้แล้ว presents successful attainment |
| future search | พวกเราจะหาข้อมูลเพิ่ม | จะ presents a later plan |
| negative activity | เขาไม่หาข้ออ้าง | ไม่ precedes the denied behavior |
เมื่อวานผมหาห้องเช่าใกล้ที่ทำงานครับ
muea wan phom ha hong chao klai thi tham ngan khrap
Yesterday I looked for a room to rent near work. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังหาที่จอดรถอยู่ค่ะ
ton ni chan kamlang ha thi chot rot yu kha
I'm looking for a parking space right now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
เขาหางานใหม่ได้แล้วครับ
khao ha ngan mai dai laeo khrap
He has found a new job now. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; successful attainment)
พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะหาข้อมูลเพิ่มค่ะ
phrung ni phuak rao cha ha khomun phoem kha
Tomorrow we'll look for more information. (ordinary polite workplace plan, female speaker)
หา never conjugates. Time, progressive framing, result predicates, จะ, and ไม่ create the interpretations around it.
Omission and polite lost-property dialogue
The object can disappear after it has been named: หาบัตรอยู่เหรอ — หาอยู่ครับ “Are you looking for the card? — I am.” A bare หาเจอแล้ว likewise needs an active referent.
ขอโทษค่ะ เห็นกระเป๋าผ้าสีเขียวไหมคะ
kho thot kha hen krapao pha si khiao mai kha
Excuse me, have you seen a green cloth bag? (polite question, female speaker)
ยังไม่เห็นครับ กำลังหาอยู่ใช่ไหมครับ
yang mai hen khrap kamlang ha yu chai mai khrap
I haven't seen it. You're looking for it now, right? (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; object omitted recoverably)
ใช่ค่ะ หาไม่เจอตั้งแต่ลงจากรถ
chai kha ha mai choe tangtae long chak rot
Yes. I haven't been able to find it since getting out of the car. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
เดี๋ยวผมช่วยหาแถว ๆ ที่นั่งให้นะครับ
diao phom chuai ha thaeo thaeo thi nang hai na khrap
I'll help look around the seats for you. (ordinary polite offer, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Using search alone to claim success
❌ ฉันหากระเป๋าแล้วค่ะ
Wrong for the intended ‘I found the bag’; this says the search has occurred or finished, not that it succeeded.
✅ ฉันหากระเป๋าเจอแล้วค่ะ
chan ha krapao choe laeo kha
I've found the bag now. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; successful result)
2. Adding an English-style ‘for’ before the object
❌ ผมหาสำหรับเอกสารอยู่ครับ
Incorrect—an ordinary search object follows หา directly.
✅ ผมกำลังหาเอกสารฉบับจริงอยู่ครับ
phom kamlang ha ekkasan chabap ching yu khrap
I'm looking for the original document. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
3. Reading หาเงิน as a physical search by default
❌ เขาหาเงิน หมายความว่าเขาทำธนบัตรหายค่ะ
Incorrect default interpretation—หาเงิน normally means earn or raise money.
✅ เขาทำงานสองที่เพื่อหาเงินเลี้ยงครอบครัวค่ะ
khao tham ngan song thi phuea ha ngoen liang khropkhrua kha
He works two jobs to earn money to support his family. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
4. Confusing a visit with a completed search
❌ ผมไปหาเพื่อนแล้ว จึงแปลว่าผมหาเพื่อนเจอครับ
Incorrect inference—ไปหาเพื่อน normally means go see a friend; it does not itself assert a successful search.
✅ เมื่อวานผมไปหาเพื่อนที่บ้านครับ
muea wan phom pai ha phuean thi ban khrap
Yesterday I went to see my friend at home. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
5. Using event denial for a failed search
❌ ผมไม่ได้หาใบเสร็จครับ
Wrong for the intended ‘I searched but couldn't find the receipt’; this denies searching.
✅ ผมหาใบเสร็จไม่เจอครับ
phom ha bai set mai choe khrap
I can't find the receipt. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker; unsuccessful search)
Key Takeaways
- หา + object presents seeking; add เจอ, พบ, or another result when discovery matters.
- หาเงิน, หารายได้, หางาน, and หาทาง extend seeking into earning, obtaining, and solving.
- In ไปหา, มาหา, and โทรหา, หา directs motion or contact toward an animate goal.
- ไม่ได้หา, หาไม่เจอ, and หาไม่ได้ distinguish no search, failed discovery, and inability or unavailability.
- หา stays invariant while time, aspect, direction, result, and negation do the grammatical work.
