เจอ: meet or find conversationally

Thai เจอ is the ordinary conversational verb for meeting a person, finding a thing, or encountering a situation. It appears constantly in เจอกัน “meet/see one another,” หาเจอ “manage to find,” and หาไม่เจอ “cannot find.” The more formal-neutral พบ overlaps in meaning, but is favored in reports, research, and professional collocations such as พบแพทย์ and พบว่า.

Meeting and finding in conversation

The person, object, or situation encountered normally follows เจอ directly. เจอกับ is also possible and can present the encounter more explicitly as an event, but it is not a required translation of English meet with.

FrameMeaningNatural substitution
person + เจอ + personmeet or run intoเจอเพื่อนเก่า
actor + เจอ + objectfind or come acrossเจอหูฟังแล้ว
experiencer + เจอ + situationencounter or faceเจอรถติด
participants + เจอกันmeet one another / see each otherเจอกันวันเสาร์
บังเอิญเจอ + person/thinghappen to run into or findบังเอิญเจอครูเก่า

เมื่อเช้าผมเจอเพื่อนสมัยเรียนบนรถไฟครับ

muea chao phom choe phuean samai rian bon rot fai khrap

This morning I ran into a friend from school on the train. (ordinary polite conversation, male speaker)

ฉันเจอหูฟังแล้วค่ะ อยู่ในลิ้นชักโต๊ะ

chan choe hu fang laeo kha yu nai lin chak to

I found the earphones; they were in the desk drawer. (ordinary polite conversation, female speaker)

เมื่อวานเราเจอรถติดหนักบนทางด่วนครับ

muea wan rao choe rot tit nak bon thang duan khrap

Yesterday we hit heavy traffic on the expressway. (ordinary polite conversation, male speaker; encountered situation)

เจอ is conversational but not rude or slang. It belongs naturally in polite speech with strangers and colleagues when the setting is not highly formal. The choice between เจอ and พบ concerns lexical register, not a separate colloquial grammar. See the formal-neutral พบ reference.

💡
For spontaneous everyday conversation, start with เจอ. Switch to พบ when writing a report, stating a research finding, or using an established professional expression such as พบแพทย์.

หาเจอ and หาไม่เจอ: search plus result

In หาเจอ, หา names the search and เจอ gives its successful result. Negating the result produces หาไม่เจอ: the person searched but did not manage to find the object. By contrast, ไม่หา means “does not search.” The position of ไม่ therefore changes the event structure.

ผมหาใบเสร็จเจอแล้วครับ อยู่ในกระเป๋าเสื้อ

phom ha bai set choe laeo khrap yu nai krapao suea

I found the receipt; it was in my shirt pocket. (ordinary polite conversation, male speaker; successful search)

ฉันหาที่จอดรถไม่เจอค่ะ เลยจอดอีกฝั่งหนึ่ง

chan ha thi chot rot mai choe kha loei chot ik fang nueng

I couldn't find a parking space, so I parked on the other side. (ordinary polite conversation, female speaker; unsuccessful search)

หาเท่าไรก็ไม่เจอครับ จำได้ว่าวางไว้ตรงนี้

ha thao rai ko mai choe khrap cham dai wa wang wai trong ni

No matter how much I look, I can't find it. I remember putting it here. (ordinary polite conversation, male speaker; object omitted recoverably)

English often hides the distinction inside look for versus find. Thai makes the search and its result available as adjacent predicates. Neither verb is an English infinitive. The result-predicate page explains how the second predicate contributes an achieved outcome.

เจอกัน and planned meetings

เจอกัน is the everyday reciprocal frame “meet/see each other.” It works for plans, greetings at reunion, and statements of repeated contact. นัดเจอ means arrange to meet (conversational); นัดพบ is the more formal-neutral alternative.

เราเจอกันหน้าสถานีตอนหกโมงนะคะ

rao choe kan na sathani ton hok mong na kha

Let's meet in front of the station at six. (ordinary polite planning, female speaker)

ผมนัดเจอลูกค้าที่ร้านกาแฟใกล้สำนักงานครับ

phom nat choe luk kha thi ran kafae klai samnakngan khrap

I've arranged to meet the client at a café near the office. (ordinary polite workplace conversation, male speaker)

ไม่ได้เจอกันตั้งหลายปี คุณสบายดีไหมคะ

mai dai choe kan tang lai pi khun sabai di mai kha

We haven't seen each other for years. How have you been? (ordinary polite reunion, female speaker)

กัน points to reciprocal participation. A singular subject can use it only when another participant is understood from context. ผมเจอกัน without such context is not a well-formed way to say “I met him.”

The unchanged headword in different environments

เจอ never conjugates. Progressive กำลัง is natural for an ongoing difficult situation—กำลังเจอปัญหา—but a punctual successful find is usually presented with เจอแล้ว. While someone is searching, กำลังหา describes the process more directly.

EnvironmentThai patternInterpretation source
past encounterเมื่อเช้าผมเจอเพื่อนบ้านเมื่อเช้า locates the meeting earlier
ongoing difficultyฉันกำลังเจอปัญหาเรื่องระบบกำลัง presents the situation as ongoing
successful resultเขาเจอกระเป๋าแล้วแล้ว presents the finding as reached
future meetingพวกเราจะเจอกันพรุ่งนี้จะ presents a later meeting
negative resultเขาไม่เจอทางออกไม่ before เจอ denies finding

ช่วงนี้ฉันกำลังเจอปัญหาเรื่องอินเทอร์เน็ตหลุดบ่อยค่ะ

chuang ni chan kamlang choe panha rueang intoenet lut boi kha

I'm currently having a problem with the internet disconnecting often. (ordinary polite conversation, female speaker)

เขาเจอกระเป๋าสตางค์ของลูกค้าแล้วครับ

khao choe krapao satang khong luk kha laeo khrap

He has found the customer's wallet. (ordinary polite service report, male speaker)

เย็นวันศุกร์พวกเราจะเจอกันที่ร้านเดิมค่ะ

yen wan suk phuak rao cha choe kan thi ran doem kha

On Friday evening we'll meet at the same restaurant as before. (ordinary polite planning, female speaker)

ช่างยังไม่เจอสาเหตุของไฟดับครับ

chang yang mai choe sahet khong fai dap khrap

The technician still hasn't found the cause of the outage. (ordinary polite conversation, male speaker)

Omission and ordinary-polite dialogue

Because เจอ is frequent in conversation, its object is often omitted after the conversation establishes it. The missing item must remain identifiable.

เจอกล่องพัสดุของห้องประชุมหรือยังคะ

choe klong phatsadu khong hong prachum rue yang kha

Have you found the parcel for the meeting room yet? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

ยังไม่เจอครับ ผมหาทั้งในคลังและหน้าห้องแล้ว

yang mai choe khrap phom ha thang nai khlang lae na hong laeo

Not yet. I've looked both in the storeroom and outside the room. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; object omitted recoverably)

ลองถามโต๊ะประชาสัมพันธ์หรือยังคะ

long tham to prachasamphan rue yang kha

Have you tried asking at the information desk? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)

ยังครับ เดี๋ยวผมลงไปถาม

yang khrap diao phom long pai tham

Not yet. I'll go down and ask in a moment. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)

💡
In หาไม่เจอ, ไม่ negates the successful result, not the search. ไม่หา says that no search is undertaken; หาไม่เจอ says the search fails.

Common Mistakes

1. Adding ถึง before a reported finding

❌ ผลตรวจเจอถึงว่าตัวเลขไม่ตรงกันค่ะ

Incorrect—ถึง does not introduce the proposition; a formal finding uses พบว่า directly.

✅ ผลการตรวจพบว่าตัวเลขไม่ตรงกันค่ะ

phon kan truat phop wa tua lek mai trong kan kha

The inspection found that the figures did not match. (formal report, female voice)

2. Using a progressive for a completed find

❌ ผมกำลังเจอนาฬิกาแล้วครับ

Incorrect aspect for the intended successful result; use กำลังหา for searching or เจอแล้ว for finding.

✅ ผมเจอนาฬิกาที่หายแล้วครับ

phom choe nalika thi hai laeo khrap

I've found the missing watch. (ordinary polite conversation, male speaker)

3. Negating the search instead of its result

❌ ฉันไม่หาที่อยู่เจอค่ะ

Wrong for ‘I looked but couldn't find the address’; ไม่หา says not to search.

✅ ฉันหาที่อยู่ในข้อความไม่เจอค่ะ

chan ha thi yu nai khokhwam mai choe kha

I couldn't find the address in the message. (ordinary polite conversation, female speaker)

4. Adding ถึง before the person met

❌ เมื่อวานผมเจอถึงเจ้าของร้านครับ

Incorrect—เจอ takes the person met directly; ถึง is unnecessary.

✅ เมื่อวานผมบังเอิญเจอเจ้าของร้านครับ

muea wan phom bang oen choe chao khong ran khrap

Yesterday I happened to run into the shop owner. (ordinary polite conversation, male speaker)

5. Omitting reciprocal กัน from a mutual plan

❌ พรุ่งนี้พวกเราเจอหน้าห้องสมุดค่ะ

Incomplete for the intended mutual arrangement; กัน explicitly presents the participants as meeting one another.

✅ พรุ่งนี้พวกเราเจอกันหน้าห้องสมุดค่ะ

phrung ni phuak rao choe kan na hong samut kha

Tomorrow we'll meet in front of the library. (ordinary polite planning, female speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • เจอ + person/thing/situation is ordinary conversational “meet, find, encounter.”
  • หาเจอ presents a successful search; หาไม่เจอ presents search without success.
  • เจอกัน is the everyday reciprocal meeting frame, while พบ and นัดพบ suit more formal-neutral contexts.
  • เจอ never conjugates; time expressions, กำลัง, แล้ว, จะ, ไม่, and discourse supply the relevant meanings.
