Thai ขาย is the invariant verb “sell.” The seller precedes it, the goods follow it, and a buyer can follow ให้ after the goods: ขายรถให้เพื่อน “sell a car to a friend.” Price expressions usually follow ในราคา or appear after the goods when context makes the relation clear.
ขาย also forms important commercial and result-sensitive combinations: ขายปลีก “sell retail,” ขายส่ง “sell wholesale,” ขายดี “sell well,” ขายหมด “sell out,” and ขายไม่ออก “be unable to get something sold.” These are distinct constructions around one unchanged headword.
Goods, buyers, and prices
The thing sold follows ขาย directly. A buyer introduced with ให้ is the endpoint of the commercial transfer, while ในราคา + amount states the sale price.
| Frame | Commercial relation | Natural model |
|---|---|---|
| seller + ขาย + goods | offer or transfer goods for money | ขายผลไม้ |
| seller + ขาย + goods + ให้ + buyer | sell the goods to a buyer | ขายจักรยานให้เพื่อน |
| seller + ขาย + goods + ในราคา + amount | state a sale price | ขายโต๊ะในราคาสามพันบาท |
| place/person + ขาย + goods + quantity | sell a measured quantity | ขายข้าวสองถุง |
| seller + ประกาศขาย + goods | advertise goods for sale | ประกาศขายบ้าน |
ครอบครัวนี้ขายผลไม้ที่ตลาดทุกเช้าครับ
khropkhrua ni khai phonlamai thi talat thuk chao khrap
This family sells fruit at the market every morning. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
ฉันขายจักรยานคันเก่าให้เพื่อนร่วมงานค่ะ
chan khai chakkrayan khan kao hai phuean ruam ngan kha
I sold my old bicycle to a coworker. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker; goods before buyer)
เจ้าของขายโต๊ะชุดนี้ในราคาหกพันบาทครับ
chao khong khai to chut ni nai rakha hok phan bat khrap
The owner is selling this table set for six thousand baht. (ordinary polite commercial speech, male speaker)
English marks the buyer with to and the seller/source with from. Thai buying and selling choose different viewpoints: ฉันซื้อจักรยานจากนิด “I bought the bicycle from Nit,” but นิดขายจักรยานให้ฉัน “Nit sold the bicycle to me.” The participant order changes because the lexical verb changes. Compare this commercial endpoint with other uses of benefactive ให้.
Selling as a business
ขายของ can mean sell things or work as a vendor. ขายปลีก and ขายส่ง identify retail and wholesale channels. วางขาย presents a product as released or placed on sale; จำหน่าย is a more formal commercial or institutional alternative.
คุณป้าขายของอยู่หน้าสถานีค่ะ
khun pa khai khong yu na sathani kha
Auntie sells goods in front of the station. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; vendor activity)
ร้านนี้ขายทั้งปลีกและส่งครับ
ran ni khai thang plik lae song khrap
This shop sells both retail and wholesale. (ordinary commercial statement, male speaker)
หนังสือเล่มใหม่จะวางขายต้นเดือนหน้าค่ะ
nangsue lem mai cha wang khai ton duean na kha
The new book will go on sale at the beginning of next month. (formal-neutral announcement, female voice)
บริษัทจำหน่ายอุปกรณ์การแพทย์ทั่วประเทศครับ
borisat chamnai uppakon kan phaet thua prathet khrap
The company distributes medical equipment nationwide. (formal corporate description, male voice)
Do not replace every everyday ขาย with จำหน่าย. A market vendor says ขายมะม่วง, while product notices, licensing language, and corporate descriptions readily use จำหน่าย. Register affects lexical choice, not verb inflection.
| Combination | Usual meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| ขายของ | sell things; work as a vendor | informal to neutral |
| ขายปลีก | sell retail | commercial |
| ขายส่ง | sell wholesale | commercial |
| วางขาย | place or release for sale | neutral to formal |
| ประกาศขาย | advertise for sale | neutral |
| ขายต่อ | resell / sell onward | neutral |
ขายดี, ขายหมด, and ขายไม่ออก
When the product becomes the topic or subject, ขาย can describe its commercial outcome. สินค้าขายดี means it sells well. ขายหมดแล้ว says all available stock has been sold. ขายออก presents achieving a sale, while ขายไม่ออก says attempts do not produce a buyer.
ขนมรสนี้ขายดีมากช่วงหน้าร้อนค่ะ
khanom rot ni khai di mak chuang na ron kha
This flavor of snack sells very well during the hot season. (ordinary polite commercial report, female speaker)
ข้าวเหนียวหมูปิ้งขายหมดก่อนแปดโมงครับ
khao niao mu ping khai mot kon paet mong khrap
The sticky rice and grilled pork sold out before eight. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
ตั้งราคาสูงเกินไป บ้านเลยขายไม่ออกค่ะ
tang rakha sung koen pai ban loei khai mai ok kha
The price was set too high, so the house won't sell. (ordinary polite explanation, female speaker; failed sale result)
ถ้าซ่อมก่อน น่าจะขายต่อได้ราคาดีครับ
tha som kon na cha khai to dai rakha di khrap
If we repair it first, we should be able to resell it at a good price. (ordinary polite advice, male speaker)
These expressions do not all assign the same perspective. ร้านขายหมด can foreground the seller exhausting stock; ของขายหมด foregrounds the goods' sold-out state. Context and omitted participants often make both concise patterns possible. See result predicates for the broader action–endpoint pattern.
The unchanged headword in different environments
| Environment | Thai pattern | What supplies the interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| past context | เมื่อวานผมขายกล้องเก่า | เมื่อวาน locates the sale earlier |
| ongoing sale | ฉันกำลังขายเสื้อผ้าออนไลน์ | กำลัง presents the activity in progress |
| stock exhausted | เขาขายตั๋วหมดแล้ว | หมดแล้ว presents the endpoint |
| future offer | พวกเราจะขายอาหารเช้า | จะ presents a later plan |
| negative decision | เขาไม่ขายที่ดินผืนนี้ | ไม่ precedes the refusal or negated plan |
เมื่อวานผมขายกล้องเก่าให้รุ่นน้องครับ
muea wan phom khai klong kao hai run nong khrap
Yesterday I sold my old camera to a junior colleague. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
ช่วงนี้ฉันกำลังขายเสื้อผ้ามือสองออนไลน์ค่ะ
chuang ni chan kamlang khai suea pha mue song onlai kha
These days I'm selling second-hand clothes online. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
ร้านขายตั๋วรอบเย็นหมดแล้วครับ
ran khai tua rop yen mot laeo khrap
The shop has sold all the tickets for the evening showing. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
เดือนหน้าพวกเราจะขายอาหารเช้าด้วยค่ะ
duean na phuak rao cha khai ahan chao duai kha
Next month we'll sell breakfast as well. (ordinary polite business plan, female speaker)
The form ขาย never changes. เมื่อวาน, กำลัง, หมดแล้ว, จะ, and ไม่ establish time, aspect, result, or polarity around it.
Negation, possibility, and omission
ไม่ขาย presents a refusal, habit, or negated plan. ไม่ได้ขาย denies that a sale occurred. ขายไม่ได้ says sale is impossible or prohibited. ขายไม่ออก says a buyer cannot be found or a sale cannot be achieved.
ผมไม่ได้ขายรถครับ แค่ให้เพื่อนยืม
phom mai dai khai rot khrap khae hai phuean yuem
I didn't sell the car; I only lent it to a friend. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker)
สินค้าชนิดนี้ขายออนไลน์ไม่ได้ค่ะ
sinkha chanit ni khai onlai mai dai kha
This type of product cannot be sold online. (formal-polite rule, female voice; sale prohibited or unavailable)
After a question naming the goods, ขายแล้วครับ can mean “I've sold it,” and ยังครับ “not yet.” Without an active item, bare ขายแล้ว does not identify what changed hands.
Polite marketplace dialogue
โต๊ะตัวนี้ยังขายอยู่ไหมคะ
to tua ni yang khai yu mai kha
Is this table still for sale? (ordinary polite marketplace question, female speaker)
ยังขายอยู่ครับ เพิ่งลงประกาศเมื่อเช้า
yang khai yu khrap phoeng long prakat muea chao
Yes, it is. I only posted the listing this morning. (ordinary polite reply, male seller)
ถ้ารับวันนี้ ลดราคาได้ไหมคะ
tha rap wan ni lot rakha dai mai kha
If I take it today, could you lower the price? (ordinary polite negotiation, female buyer)
ลดได้ห้าร้อยบาทครับ แต่ผู้ซื้อต้องมารับเอง
lot dai ha roi bat khrap tae phu sue tong ma rap eng
I can reduce it by five hundred baht, but the buyer has to collect it. (ordinary polite reply, male seller)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting the buyer before the goods
❌ ผมขายให้เพื่อนจักรยานครับ
Incorrect neutral transfer order—the goods precede ให้ and the buyer.
✅ ผมขายจักรยานคันเก่าให้เพื่อนครับ
phom khai chakkrayan khan kao hai phuean khrap
I sold my old bicycle to a friend. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
2. Using จาก for the buyer
❌ ฉันขายโทรศัพท์จากคุณนิดค่ะ
Wrong for ‘sold the phone to Khun Nit’; จาก marks a source in the buying viewpoint.
✅ ฉันขายโทรศัพท์เครื่องเก่าให้คุณนิดค่ะ
chan khai thorasap khrueang kao hai khun nit kha
I sold my old phone to Khun Nit. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
3. Confusing a good product with good sales
❌ ขนมนี้ขายดี หมายความว่ารสชาติอร่อยค่ะ
Incorrect inference—ขายดี reports commercial performance, not flavor quality.
✅ ขนมนี้ขายดีเพราะนักท่องเที่ยวซื้อเป็นของฝากค่ะ
khanom ni khai di phro nakthongthiao sue pen khong fak kha
This snack sells well because tourists buy it as a souvenir. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
4. Using event denial for a failed attempt to sell
❌ ตั้งราคาสูงไป ฉันไม่ได้ขายรถค่ะ
Wrong for ‘I can't get the car sold’; this merely denies that a sale occurred.
✅ ตั้งราคาสูงไป ฉันขายรถไม่ออกค่ะ
tang rakha sung pai chan khai rot mai ok kha
I set the price too high, so I can't get the car sold. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
5. Treating แล้ว as a past ending before the goods
❌ เมื่อวานร้านขายแล้วตั๋วทั้งหมดครับ
Incorrect completion order—แล้ว follows the completed sale phrase.
✅ เมื่อวานร้านขายตั๋วรอบเช้าหมดแล้วครับ
muea wan ran khai tua rop chao mot laeo khrap
Yesterday the shop sold all the tickets for the morning showing. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

- ขายปลีก, ขายส่ง, วางขาย, and formal จำหน่าย distinguish commercial activities and registers.
- ขายดี, ขายหมด, ขายออก, and ขายไม่ออก describe different sales results.
