บอก: tell; inform

Thai บอก is an invariant verb for directing information to someone: tell, inform, state, identify, or give an answer, name, time, or route. Its characteristic participant is the person who receives the information. Compare พูดกับคุณนิด “speak with Khun Nit” with บอกคุณนิด “tell Khun Nit.”

The material after บอก determines whether the speaker supplies a recipient, a piece of information, a reported proposition with ว่า, or a directive with ให้. There is no conjugation for tell, tells, or told.

ผมบอกคุณนิดเรื่องเวลาใหม่แล้วครับ

phom bok khun nit rueang wela mai laeo khrap

I've told Khun Nit about the new time. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

ช่วยบอกทางไปสถานีรถไฟหน่อยได้ไหมคะ

chuai bok thang pai sathani rotfai noi dai mai kha

Could you tell me the way to the railway station? (ordinary polite request, female speaker; recipient understood)

หัวหน้าบอกทีมว่าการประชุมยกเลิกค่ะ

hua na bok thim wa kan prachum yokloek kha

The supervisor told the team that the meeting was canceled. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

The bare noun after บอก is interpreted through context. In บอกคุณนิด, it is the recipient; in บอกชื่อ, it is the information supplied. When both appear, recipient normally precedes ว่า + proposition. The synthesis page พูด, บอก, ถาม, and ตอบ compares the whole speech-verb family.

💡
Think “information reaches a recipient.” Name that recipient directly before ว่า or ให้; use พูดกับ instead when the interaction or speaking event matters more than transmission.

An invariant-form matrix

บอก never changes with subject or time. The matrix shows environments around the same headword rather than invented tense forms.

EnvironmentThai modelInterpretation source
ผม + past contextเมื่อวานผมบอกลูกค้าเมื่อวาน supplies past time

เขา + completed/relevantเขาบอกข่าวแล้วแล้ว presents completion
พวกเรา + prospectiveพวกเราจะบอกผลพรุ่งนี้จะ and พรุ่งนี้ present a plan
เขา + negativeเขาไม่บอกเหตุผลไม่ precedes the denied predicate

เมื่อวานผมบอกลูกค้าว่าสินค้ามาถึงแล้วครับ

muea wan phom bok luk kha wa sinkha ma thueng laeo khrap

Yesterday I told the customer that the product had arrived. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)

ฉันกำลังบอกทางนักท่องเที่ยวอยู่ค่ะ

chan kamlang bok thang nakthongthiao yu kha

I'm giving a tourist directions. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

เขาบอกข่าวดีกับครอบครัวแล้วครับ

khao bok khao di kap khropkhrua laeo khrap

He has told his family the good news. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; กับ marks the recipient after the information noun)

พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะบอกผลให้ทุกคนทราบค่ะ

phrung ni phuak rao cha bok phon hai thuk khon sap kha

Tomorrow we will inform everyone of the result. (formal-polite announcement, female voice)

Modern Central Thai also permits บอกกับ + recipient, especially when the recipient is elaborated or contrastive. Bare บอก + recipient is shorter and highly frequent. Do not turn either pattern into an English-style conjugation rule.

ว่า for information, ให้ for a requested action

The contrast after the recipient is structural. ว่า introduces information whose truth or wording is reported. ให้ introduces an event that the recipient is expected, requested, or directed to perform.

ผู้จัดการบอกพนักงานว่าร้านจะปิดเร็วขึ้นครับ

phu chatkan bok phanak ngan wa ran cha pit reo khuen khrap

The manager told the employees that the shop would close earlier. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; information)

ผู้จัดการบอกพนักงานให้ปิดร้านเร็วขึ้นครับ

phu chatkan bok phanak ngan hai pit ran reo khuen khrap

The manager told the employees to close the shop earlier. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker; directive)

The first clause says who receives a proposition about the shop. In the second, พนักงาน is also the understood actor of ปิดร้าน. Thai does not add an infinitive form after ให้. For longer scope contrasts, see speech and thought frames with ว่า.

หมอบอกให้ฉันพักสองวันค่ะ

mo bok hai chan phak song wan kha

The doctor told me to rest for two days. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; recipient follows ให้ when omitted before it)

Here no recipient stands immediately after บอก; ให้ฉันพัก supplies the directed event and its actor. Both บอกฉันให้พัก and บอกให้ฉันพัก occur, with discourse and weight affecting the placement.

Common collocations and lexical extensions

CombinationUsual meaningRegister
บอกชื่อgive or say a nameneutral
บอกทางgive directionsneutral
บอกข่าวtell the newsneutral
บอกต่อpass the information onneutral
บอกลาsay goodbye / take leaveneutral to literary by context
บอกใบ้give a hintneutral
บอกกล่าวnotify, make knownformal

อย่าเพิ่งบอกต่อนะคะ ฉันยังไม่ได้แจ้งทีม

ya phoeng bok to na kha chan yang mai dai chaeng thim

Please don't pass it on yet; I haven't informed the team. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)

ช่วยบอกใบ้อีกนิดได้ไหมครับ

chuai bok bai ik nit dai mai khrap

Could you give me one more hint? (ordinary polite request, male speaker)

บริษัทบอกกล่าวเรื่องการเปลี่ยนแปลงให้พนักงานทราบล่วงหน้าค่ะ

borisat bok klao rueang kan plianplaeng hai phanak ngan sap luang na kha

The company notified the employees of the change in advance. (formal report, female voice)

บอกกล่าว is elevated compared with everyday บอก, and แจ้ง is the usual concise institutional verb. Register choice changes vocabulary and packaging, not the inflection of บอก.

Negation and recoverable omission

Use ไม่บอก for refusal, habit, or a negated plan; ไม่ได้บอก to deny that a telling event occurred; and บอกไม่ได้ when the speaker cannot disclose or determine the information.

เรื่องนี้ผมบอกไม่ได้ครับ เป็นข้อมูลส่วนตัว

rueang ni phom bok mai dai khrap pen khomun suan tua

I can't tell you about this; it is private information. (ordinary polite refusal, male speaker)

ฉันไม่ได้บอกว่าจะลาออกค่ะ

chan mai dai bok wa cha la ok kha

I didn't say that I was going to resign. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker; telling event denied)

เขาไม่บอกเหตุผลกับใครครับ

khao mai bok hetphon kap khrai khrap

He won't tell anyone the reason. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)

Once the content and recipient are active, both can disappear: บอกแล้วครับ means “I've told them/said it” only when the conversation supplies those roles. Formal documents generally repeat them because later readers lack that shared context.

💡
Keep ไม่ได้บอก “did not tell” apart from บอกไม่ได้ “cannot tell.” With sensitive information, the latter often expresses inability or a refusal to disclose rather than lack of speaking ability.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คุณบอกลูกค้าเรื่องวันส่งของใหม่หรือยังคะ

khun bok luk kha rueang wan song khong mai rue yang kha

Have you told the customer about the new delivery date yet? (ordinary polite workplace question, female speaker)

บอกแล้วครับ ลูกค้าขอให้ส่งตอนเช้า

bok laeo khrap luk kha kho hai song ton chao

Yes. The customer asked for delivery in the morning. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; speaker and topic omitted recoverably)

แล้วต้องบอกคนขับรถด้วยไหมคะ

laeo tong bok khon khap rot duai mai kha

Do we also need to tell the driver? (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)

ต้องครับ เดี๋ยวผมบอกให้

tong khrap diao phom bok hai

Yes. I'll tell them for you in a moment. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; recipient and content recoverable)

Common Mistakes

1. Using พูด with a bare information recipient

❌ ผมพูดลูกค้าว่าร้านปิดครับ

Incorrect for ‘told the customer’—พูด needs กับ for a conversational partner, while บอก selects an information recipient directly.

✅ ผมบอกลูกค้าว่าร้านปิดแล้วครับ

phom bok luk kha wa ran pit laeo khrap

I told the customer that the shop had closed. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)

2. Putting the recipient after the reported proposition

❌ ฉันบอกว่าพรุ่งนี้หยุดคุณนิดค่ะ

Incorrect neutral order—the person told belongs before ว่า and its proposition.

✅ ฉันบอกคุณนิดว่าพรุ่งนี้หยุดค่ะ

chan bok khun nit wa phrung ni yut kha

I told Khun Nit that tomorrow is a day off. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)

3. Using ว่า where a directive requires ให้

❌ หัวหน้าบอกทีมว่ารอก่อนครับ

Unclear for the intended command ‘told the team to wait’; ว่า presents quoted or reported content.

✅ หัวหน้าบอกทีมให้รอก่อนครับ

hua na bok thim hai ro kon khrap

The supervisor told the team to wait. (ordinary polite workplace report, male speaker)

4. Moving negation after the recipient

❌ เขาบอกฉันไม่เรื่องนี้ค่ะ

Incorrect—ไม่ precedes บอก when the telling event is denied.

✅ เขาไม่บอกฉันเรื่องนี้ค่ะ

khao mai bok chan rueang ni kha

He won't tell me about this. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)

5. Translating every English ‘tell’ with บอก

❌ คุณตาบอกนิทานให้หลานฟังครับ

Unnatural for telling a story as a narrative; Thai normally uses เล่าเรื่อง or เล่านิทาน.

✅ คุณตาเล่านิทานให้หลานฟังครับ

khun ta lao nithan hai lan fang khrap

Grandfather tells his grandchild a story. (ordinary polite family report, male speaker)

Key Takeaways

  • บอก + recipient directs information to someone; บอก + information noun supplies a name, time, route, or answer.
  • บอก + recipient + ว่า... reports information, while บอก + recipient + ให้... directs an action.
  • Combinations such as บอกต่อ, บอกลา, and บอกใบ้ have established meanings and registers.
  • ไม่บอก, ไม่ได้บอก, and บอกไม่ได้ differ in scope.
  • Subjects, recipients, and content may be omitted only when discourse makes them recoverable; บอก itself never conjugates.
