Thai พูด is the invariant verb for producing speech: speaking, saying something, using a language, or talking about a topic. It highlights the speech event rather than the delivery of information to a recipient. That is why พูดกับคุณนิด means “speak with Khun Nit,” while บอกคุณนิด means “tell Khun Nit.”
The verb never changes for speak, speaks, spoke, or will speak. Thai places subjects, time expressions, aspect markers, addressees, content, and manner around the single form พูด.
Core frames: language, topic, partner, and content
| Communicative focus | Frame | Natural model |
|---|---|---|
| use a language | พูด + language | พูดภาษาไทย |
| speak with someone | พูดกับ + person | พูดกับลูกค้า |
| discuss a topic | พูดเรื่อง / พูดถึง + topic | พูดเรื่องงาน / พูดถึงงบ |
| say that... | พูดว่า + proposition | พูดว่าจะกลับเย็น |
| describe manner | พูด + manner/result | พูดช้า ๆ / พูดให้ชัด |
เขาพูดภาษาไทยกับลูกค้าได้คล่องครับ
khao phut phasa thai kap luk kha dai khlong khrap
He can speak Thai fluently with customers. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
เมื่อเช้าฉันพูดกับคุณนิดเรื่องตารางงานค่ะ
muea chao chan phut kap khun nit rueang tarang ngan kha
This morning I spoke with Khun Nit about the schedule. (ordinary polite speech, female speaker)
หัวหน้าพูดว่าจะประกาศผลพรุ่งนี้ครับ
hua na phut wa cha prakat phon phrung ni khrap
The supervisor said that the result would be announced tomorrow. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
English speak and say divide this territory differently. Thai can use พูดว่า for uttered content, but an overt conversational partner normally takes กับ. For information directed to a recipient, บอก + recipient is often the more precise choice; see บอก: tell and inform.
An invariant-form matrix
This is the useful Thai counterpart of a conjugation table. The headword remains unchanged; the surrounding material supplies time, viewpoint, and polarity.
| Environment | Thai model | Interpretation source |
|---|---|---|
| ผม + past context | เมื่อวานผมพูดกับผู้จัดการ | เมื่อวาน supplies past time |
| ฉัน + ongoing | ฉันกำลังพูดกับลูกค้า | กำลัง presents speech in progress |
| เขา + completed/relevant | เขาพูดเรื่องนี้แล้ว | แล้ว presents the speech as completed |
| พวกเรา + prospective | พวกเราจะพูดในที่ประชุม | จะ presents a plan |
| เขา + negative | เขาไม่พูดเรื่องเงิน | ไม่ precedes the denied predicate |
เมื่อวานผมพูดกับผู้จัดการเรื่องวันหยุดครับ
muea wan phom phut kap phu chatkan rueang wan yut khrap
Yesterday I spoke with the manager about leave. (ordinary polite workplace speech, male speaker)
ตอนนี้ฉันกำลังพูดกับลูกค้าอยู่ค่ะ
ton ni chan kamlang phut kap luk kha yu kha
I'm speaking with a customer right now. (ordinary polite workplace speech, female speaker)
เขาพูดเรื่องนี้กับทีมแล้วครับ
khao phut rueang ni kap thim laeo khrap
He has discussed this matter with the team. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
พรุ่งนี้พวกเราจะพูดในที่ประชุมค่ะ
phrung ni phuak rao cha phut nai thi prachum kha
Tomorrow we will speak at the meeting. (ordinary polite plan, female speaker)
แล้ว is not a past ending on พูด, and จะ is not a future form of it. A time phrase may be sufficient by itself, while aspect markers add a speaker's viewpoint on the event.
Content, quotation, and manner
พูดว่า + clause introduces what was said. Thai does not backshift the embedded predicate merely because the speaking happened earlier. In เมื่อวานเขาพูดว่าพรุ่งนี้จะมา, the two time expressions establish their own reference points.
มาลีพูดว่าเย็นนี้จะโทรกลับค่ะ
mali phut wa yen ni cha tho klap kha
Mali said that she would call back this evening. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
ผมพูดตรง ๆ ว่ายังไม่เห็นด้วยครับ
phom phut trong trong wa yang mai hen duai khrap
I said frankly that I still disagreed. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
The complementizer ว่า marks the boundary before a proposition. It is not an infinitive marker. Direct quotation is also possible in writing, but the broader choice between quotation and report belongs on speech and thought frames with ว่า.
Manner can follow directly or appear in พูดให้ + result. The latter asks the speaker to make the speech reach a result such as clarity or greater volume.
ช่วยพูดช้ากว่านี้หน่อยได้ไหมคะ
chuai phut cha kwa ni noi dai mai kha
Could you speak a little more slowly? (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
กรุณาพูดให้ชัดเจนระหว่างบันทึกเสียงครับ
karuna phut hai chatchen rawang banthuek siang khrap
Please speak clearly during the recording. (formal-polite instruction, male voice)
Frequent extensions and collocations
| Combination | Usual meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| พูดคุย | talk, discuss | neutral |
| พูดถึง | mention, speak about | neutral |
| พูดตรง ๆ | speak frankly | informal to neutral |
| พูดเล่น | joke, say something not seriously | informal |
| พูดจริง | speak seriously / tell the truth | informal to neutral |
| พูดออกมา | say something aloud or finally voice it | neutral |
เราควรพูดคุยกันก่อนตัดสินใจครับ
rao khuan phut khui kan kon tatsinchai khrap
We should talk before deciding. (ordinary polite suggestion, male speaker)
เธอไม่ได้พูดถึงค่าใช้จ่ายเพิ่มเติมค่ะ
thoe mai dai phut thueng kha chai chai phoemtoem kha
She did not mention the additional costs. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
ผมพูดเล่นนะครับ ไม่ต้องกังวล
phom phut len na khrap mai tong kangwon
I'm only joking; don't worry. (ordinary conversational reassurance, male speaker)
These meanings belong to constructions. พูดถึง is not simply พูด plus a freely translated English preposition, and พูดเล่น describes nonserious speech rather than “speak while playing.”
Negation and recoverable omission
Use ไม่พูด for refusal, habit, or a negated plan; ไม่ได้พูด to deny that speech occurred; and พูดไม่ได้ when speaking is impossible or not permitted. Their order changes scope.
วันนี้เขาไม่พูดเรื่องงานค่ะ
wan ni khao mai phut rueang ngan kha
Today he is not talking about work. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; topic avoided)
เมื่อกี้ผมไม่ได้พูดชื่อนั้นครับ
muea ki phom mai dai phut chue nan khrap
I didn't say that name just now. (ordinary polite correction, male speaker; event denied)
ในห้องสมุดพูดเสียงดังไม่ได้ค่ะ
nai hong samut phut siang dang mai dai kha
You cannot speak loudly in the library. (ordinary polite rule, female speaker)
A language, topic, or proposition may disappear when it is active. Asked ประชุมวันนี้คุณจะพูดไหม, พูดครับ is complete. Outside that context, bare พูด says only that speaking occurs and may leave the listener asking “about what?”
Ordinary-polite dialogue
พรุ่งนี้คุณจะพูดเรื่องไหนในที่ประชุมคะ
phrung ni khun cha phut rueang nai nai thi prachum kha
Which topic will you speak about at the meeting tomorrow? (polite question, female speaker)
ผมจะพูดเรื่องแผนงานปีหน้าครับ
phom cha phut rueang phaen ngan pi na khrap
I'll speak about next year's work plan. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
ต้องพูดนานไหมคะ
tong phut nan mai kha
Do you have to speak for long? (ordinary polite follow-up, female speaker)
ประมาณสิบนาทีครับ แล้วให้ทีมตอบคำถาม
praman sip nathi khrap laeo hai thim top khamtham
About ten minutes, and then I'll have the team answer questions. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Common Mistakes
1. Giving พูด a bare addressee
❌ เมื่อเช้าผมพูดผู้จัดการครับ
Incorrect for ‘spoke with the manager’—the conversational partner normally follows กับ.
✅ เมื่อเช้าผมพูดกับผู้จัดการครับ
muea chao phom phut kap phu chatkan khrap
I spoke with the manager this morning. (ordinary polite speech, male speaker)
2. Adding an English-style preposition before a language
❌ เธอพูดในภาษาไทยกับลูกค้าค่ะ
Incorrect neutral language frame—ภาษาไทย follows พูด directly.
✅ เธอพูดภาษาไทยกับลูกค้าค่ะ
thoe phut phasa thai kap luk kha kha
She speaks Thai with customers. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
3. Using พูด as though it meant directed ‘tell’
❌ ช่วยพูดเขาว่าฉันจะมาสายค่ะ
Incorrect for telling a recipient; พูด does not take a bare recipient in this frame.
✅ ช่วยบอกเขาว่าฉันจะมาสายค่ะ
chuai bok khao wa chan cha ma sai kha
Please tell him that I'll be late. (ordinary polite request, female speaker)
4. Moving negation after the speech object
❌ วันนี้ผมพูดเรื่องนี้ไม่ครับ
Incorrect for refusing to discuss the matter—ไม่ belongs before พูด.
✅ วันนี้ผมไม่พูดเรื่องนี้ครับ
wan ni phom mai phut rueang ni khrap
I'm not discussing this today. (ordinary polite refusal, male speaker)
5. Treating แล้ว as an inflected part of the verb
❌ เขาพูดแล้วเรื่องงบค่ะ
Incorrect neutral completion order—แล้ว follows the completed predicate phrase.
✅ เขาพูดเรื่องงบแล้วค่ะ
khao phut rueang ngop laeo kha
He has already discussed the budget. (ordinary polite report, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
- พูด + language/topic/content foregrounds speech; พูดกับ + person adds a conversational partner.
- พูดว่า + proposition reports content without English-style tense backshift.
- Manner and result follow the unchanged verb in frames such as พูดช้า ๆ and พูดให้ชัด.
- Collocations such as พูดถึง, พูดคุย, and พูดเล่น must be learned as constructions.
- Time, aspect, negation, and recoverable omission surround พูด; the headword never conjugates.
