The ordinary Thai negator ไม่ comes before the predicate or operator it negates: ไม่ไป “not go,” ไม่แพง “not expensive,” and ไม่ต้องไป “not need to go.” Thai does not use English-style do not, does not move a negator after a conjugated auxiliary, and does not change the verb.
Position also determines scope. ไม่ต้องมา means “do not need to come,” while ต้องไม่มา means “must not come.” ไม่ได้ไป says that going did not occur; ไปไม่ได้ says that going is impossible or not permitted. The same forms can create sharply different messages when their order changes.
Basic ไม่ immediately precedes the predicate
With an action or property predicate, use subject + ไม่ + predicate. A recoverable subject may be omitted, but the local order ไม่ + predicate remains.
| Slot | Possible substitutions | Model |
|---|---|---|
wan ni khun nit mai khao prachum kha
Khun Nit is not attending the meeting today. (ordinary-polite event negation, female speaker)
อาหารร้านนี้ไม่เผ็ดมากครับ
ahan ran ni mai phet mak khrap
The food at this restaurant isn't very spicy. (ordinary-polite property negation, male speaker)
ไม่รับถุงค่ะ ขอบคุณนะคะ
mai rap thung kha khop khun na kha
I won't take a bag, thank you. (ordinary-polite refusal, female speaker; subject omitted)
English requires is in the property translation and often I in the refusal. Thai needs neither. เผ็ด is already a predicate, and the service turn identifies the person refusing.
Predicate type selects the conventional negative
Not every English not be becomes ไม่ + one Thai copula. Standard Central Thai uses conventional combinations.
| Positive relation | Ordinary negative | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| เขามา | เขาไม่มา | he does not come |
| ห้องเงียบ | ห้องไม่เงียบ | the room is not quiet |
| เขาเป็นหมอ | เขาไม่ใช่หมอ | he is not a doctor |
| เขาอยู่ที่นี่ | เขาไม่อยู่ที่นี่ | he is not here |
| ที่นี่มีลิฟต์ | ที่นี่ไม่มีลิฟต์ | there is no lift here |
คุณอรไม่ใช่ผู้จัดการค่ะ เป็นหัวหน้าฝ่ายบัญชี
khun on mai chai phuchatkan kha pen hua na fai banchi
Khun On isn't the manager; she's the head of accounting. (ordinary-polite identity correction, female speaker)
วันนี้ผู้จัดการไม่อยู่ที่สำนักงานครับ
wan ni phuchatkan mai yu thi samnakngan khrap
The manager isn't at the office today. (ordinary-polite location report, male speaker)
ชั้นนี้ไม่มีห้องน้ำค่ะ ต้องขึ้นไปชั้นสาม
chan ni mai mi hong nam kha tong khuen pai chan sam
There isn't a restroom on this floor; you have to go up to the third floor. (ordinary-polite existential information, female speaker)
ไม่เป็น is not impossible, but it has other productive readings: inability learned through practice (ว่ายน้ำไม่เป็น “cannot swim”), failure to function, or refusal/failure to become something in a suitable context. Do not use it as the automatic negative of every classifying เป็น. For simple rejected identity or category, ไม่ใช่ is the safe ordinary choice.
The detailed distinctions appear on ไม่ใช่ for rejected identity, ไม่มี for absence, and the predicate-type overview.
Minimal scope contrast: ไม่ต้อง versus ต้องไม่
When ไม่ precedes a modal, it negates the requirement. When the modal precedes ไม่, the requirement takes scope over a negative action.
พรุ่งนี้ไม่ต้องมาสำนักงานครับ
phrung ni mai tong ma samnakngan khrap
You don't need to come to the office tomorrow. (ordinary-polite release from obligation, male speaker)
พรุ่งนี้ต้องไม่มาสายค่ะ
phrung ni tong mai ma sai kha
Tomorrow you must not arrive late. (polite but firm prohibition, female speaker)
The first permits both coming and not coming; it simply removes the necessity. The second requires nonlateness. English learners who treat ต้อง as a conjugated auxiliary and place “not” after it every time lose this distinction.
Epistemic modals also interact with negation:
เขาอาจไม่มาประชุมวันนี้ครับ
khao at mai ma prachum wan ni khrap
He may not come to today's meeting. (formal-neutral polite possibility assessment, male speaker)
เรื่องนี้ไม่อาจแก้ได้ภายในวันเดียวค่ะ
rueang ni mai at kae dai phainai wan diao kha
This matter cannot be resolved within one day. (formal written-style assessment, female voice)
อาจไม่ P means that not-P is possible. ไม่อาจ P (formal) denies possibility and means “cannot P.” Ordinary conversation more often uses a suitable potential construction such as P ไม่ได้.
ไม่ได้ before a verb versus ไม่ได้ after it
The sequence ไม่ได้ + verb commonly denies that an event occurred or is realized. A verb followed by ไม่ได้ commonly denies ability, permission, or situational possibility.
เมื่อวานผมไม่ได้ไปรับพัสดุครับ
muea wan phom mai dai pai rap phatsadu khrap
I didn't go to collect the parcel yesterday. (ordinary-polite event denial, male speaker; ไม่ได้ before ไป)
วันนี้ผมไปรับพัสดุไม่ได้ครับ รถเสีย
wan ni phom pai rap phatsadu mai dai khrap rot sia
I can't go to collect the parcel today; the car has broken down. (ordinary-polite inability report, male speaker; ไม่ได้ after the motion phrase)
ไฟล์นี้ส่งทางอีเมลไม่ได้ค่ะ ใหญ่เกินไป
fai ni song thang imel mai dai kha yai koen pai
This file can't be sent by email; it is too large. (ordinary-polite situational impossibility, female speaker)
This ordering contrast is central and genuinely takes practice. ไม่ได้ไป is not simply a “past tense,” and ไปไม่ได้ is not produced by moving an English modal. Each is a Thai scope construction. The ไม่ได้ guide develops its pragmatic and aspectual readings.
Negation with viewpoint and time
Other markers can precede the negator or follow it according to meaning. ยังไม่ P says P is not true up to the reference point; ไม่เคย P says no experience of P exists.
ฝ่ายบัญชียังไม่ส่งใบเสร็จค่ะ
fai banchi yang mai song bai set kha
Accounting has not sent the receipt yet. (ordinary-polite not-yet report, female speaker)
ผมไม่เคยพักที่โรงแรมนี้ครับ
phom mai khoei phak thi rongraem ni khrap
I have never stayed at this hotel. (ordinary-polite experiential negation, male speaker)
รายงานยังไม่เสร็จครับ แต่ใกล้แล้ว
raingan yang mai set khrap tae klai laeo
The report isn't finished yet, but it is close. (ordinary-polite status update, male speaker)
Neither sentence requires a past or perfect ending on the verb. Time, aspectual viewpoint, and discourse create the interpretation.
Topics can move; the negator stays with its scope
An object or domain may be fronted as a topic, especially for contrast. That movement does not drag ไม่ away from the predicate.
กาแฟผมไม่ดื่ม แต่ชาดื่มได้ครับ
kafae phom mai duem tae cha duem dai khrap
Coffee, I don't drink, but tea is fine. (ordinary-polite contrastive topic, male speaker)
ห้องด้านใน วันนี้ไม่เปิดค่ะ
hong dan nai wan ni mai poet kha
As for the inner room, it isn't open today. (ordinary-polite topic–comment information, female speaker)
These are motivated topic structures, not neutral object–subject–verb order. With no contrast, ผมไม่ดื่มกาแฟ and วันนี้ห้องด้านในไม่เปิด are safer.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
Two coworkers check tomorrow's arrangements.
พรุ่งนี้ต้องเข้าประชุมไหมคะ
phrung ni tong khao prachum mai kha
Do we need to attend the meeting tomorrow? (ordinary-polite question, female speaker; participants omitted)
ไม่ต้องเข้าครับ ผู้จัดการไม่อยู่
mai tong khao khrap phuchatkan mai yu
No, we don't need to. The manager won't be there. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; meeting and place recovered)
แล้ววันนี้ส่งรายงานได้ไหมคะ
laeo wan ni song raingan dai mai kha
Can we submit the report today, then? (ordinary-polite follow-up, female speaker)
ส่งไม่ได้ครับ ระบบยังไม่เปิด
song mai dai khrap rabop yang mai poet
No, we can't submit it. The system isn't open yet. (ordinary-polite reply, male speaker; object and participants omitted)
Common Mistakes
1. Putting ordinary ไม่ after the main verb
❌ วันนี้เขามาประชุมไม่ค่ะ
Incorrect neutral order—ไม่ must precede มา.
✅ วันนี้เขาไม่มาประชุมค่ะ
wan ni khao mai ma prachum kha
He isn't coming to the meeting today. (ordinary-polite event negation, female speaker)
2. Negating nominal identity with mechanical ไม่ + คือ
❌ คุณชัยไม่คือหมอครับ
Incorrect—ordinary nominal identity and category rejection use ไม่ใช่, not mechanical ไม่ + คือ.
✅ คุณชัยไม่ใช่หมอครับ เป็นพยาบาล
khun chai mai chai mo khrap pen phayaban
Khun Chai isn't a doctor; he's a nurse. (ordinary-polite identity correction, male speaker)
3. Confusing event denial with inability
❌ เมื่อวานฉันไปสำนักงานไม่ได้ค่ะ
Wrong for the intended neutral ‘I did not go’—postverbal ไม่ได้ says going was impossible or not permitted.
✅ เมื่อวานไม่ได้ไปสำนักงานค่ะ
muea wan mai dai pai samnakngan kha
I didn't go to the office yesterday. (ordinary-polite event denial, female speaker; subject omitted)
4. Reversing the scope of ต้อง and ไม่
❌ วันหยุดพนักงานต้องไม่มาทำงานครับ
Wrong for the intended ‘employees need not come’—ต้องไม่ creates a prohibition.
✅ วันหยุดพนักงานไม่ต้องมาทำงานครับ
wan yut phanakngan mai tong ma thamngan khrap
Employees don't need to come to work on holidays. (formal-neutral polite policy statement, male voice)
5. Forcing an overt subject into a short refusal
❌ ฉันไม่เอาถุงของฉันค่ะ
Unnatural in the intended checkout exchange—the subject and owner are already obvious.
✅ ไม่เอาถุงค่ะ ใส่รวมกันได้เลย
mai ao thung kha sai ruam kan dai loei
I don't need a bag; you can put everything together. (ordinary-polite checkout response, female speaker)
Key Takeaways
Place ไม่ before the predicate or operator it negates. Use the conventional negatives ไม่ใช่, ไม่อยู่, and ไม่มี for ordinary identity, location, and existence. Contrast ไม่ต้อง P “need not P” with ต้องไม่ P “must not P,” and ไม่ได้ P “did not P” with P ไม่ได้ “cannot P.” Fronted topics and omitted arguments change information structure, but the negator remains next to its scope.
