ที่ appears in several extremely common Thai constructions. It can introduce a place, combine with นี่/นั่น/ไหน to mean “here/there/where,” link a modifying clause to a noun, link a proposition to an evaluation, or form an ordinal. These uses share a relational flavor, but they are not one English preposition at.
Position and complement shape reveal the job. In รอที่สถานี, ที่ precedes a place noun; in สถานีที่เปิดใหม่, it follows a noun and introduces a modifying clause; in ดีใจที่คุณมา, it introduces the reason/content of an evaluation.
Locative ที่ introduces a general place
The (ordinary) frame event + ที่ + place tells where an event happens. With lexical อยู่, use entity + อยู่ + ที่ + place to locate an identifiable entity.
เราเจอกันที่สถานีรถไฟฟ้าค่ะ
rao choe kan thi sathani rotfaifa kha
We'll meet at the electric-train station. (ordinary polite arrangement, female speaker)
คุณหมออยู่ที่คลินิกถึงห้าโมงครับ
khun mo yu thi khlinik thueng ha mong khrap
The doctor is at the clinic until five. (ordinary polite information, male speaker)
ผมลืมกระเป๋าไว้ที่ร้านอาหารครับ
phom luem krapao wai thi ran ahan khrap
I left my bag at the restaurant. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
ที่ presents the location as a point or setting without specifying enclosure, surface contact, or lower position. More specific relators such as ใน “in,” บน “on,” and ใต้ “under” supply those geometries.
เอกสารอยู่ที่โต๊ะประชาสัมพันธ์ค่ะ
ekkasan yu thi to prachasamphan kha
The documents are at the information desk. (ordinary polite location, female speaker; desk treated as a service point)
This does not claim that the papers lie on the desk's upper surface. บนโต๊ะ would make that relation explicit. Choosing ที่ versus บน changes the spatial construal, not merely style.
Motion goals with and without ที่
After ไป/มา, a familiar destination can follow directly: ไปตลาด, มาบ้าน, กลับสำนักงาน. ไปที่ + place explicitly presents the place as a goal and is useful with a longer or contrastive destination.
หลังเลิกงานฉันจะไปตลาดค่ะ
lang loek ngan chan cha pai talat kha
After work I'll go to the market. (ordinary polite plan, female speaker; familiar destination directly after ไป)
กรุณาไปที่เคาน์เตอร์หมายเลขหกครับ
karuna pai thi khaotoe mailek hok khrap
Please go to counter number six. (formal-polite service instruction, male voice; explicit destination)
This is not an obligatory English-style distinction between go to and go Ø. Thai motion predicates, destination type, and information structure determine whether ที่ is useful. ไปในอาคาร more specifically means go into/inside the building, while ไปที่อาคาร treats the building as a destination point.
ที่นี่, ที่นั่น, and ที่ไหน
ที่ + deictic/question word forms a place expression.
| Form | Meaning | Productive frame |
|---|---|---|
| ที่นี่ | here | ทำงานที่นี่ |
| ที่นั่น | there | เคยไปที่นั่น |
| ที่โน่น | over there, farther away | จอดรถที่โน่น |
| ที่ไหน | where | คุณอยู่ที่ไหน |
| ที่เดิม | the same/usual place | เจอกันที่เดิม |
| ที่อื่น | elsewhere | ไปหาที่อื่น |
วันนี้คุณทำงานที่ไหนคะ
wan ni khun tham ngan thi nai kha
Where are you working today? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
ทำงานที่นี่ครับ แต่ช่วงบ่ายจะไปที่อื่น
tham ngan thi ni khrap tae chuang bai cha pai thi uen
I'm working here, but this afternoon I'll go somewhere else. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; subject recoverable)
The reply omits ผม because the question establishes the worker. This is ordinary zero anaphora; ที่นี่ does not remove the subject grammatically.
For contrasts among นี่, นั่น, and โน่น, see deictic locations.
Relative ที่ follows a head noun
In noun + ที่ + clause, ที่ is a relative linker rather than a place relator.
ร้านที่เปิดดึกอยู่ข้างโรงพยาบาลค่ะ
ran thi poet duek yu khang rongphayaban kha
The shop that stays open late is beside the hospital. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; relative ที่)
นี่คือห้องที่เราใช้ประชุมทุกวันจันทร์ครับ
ni khue hong thi rao chai prachum thuk wan chan khrap
This is the room we use for meetings every Monday. (ordinary polite identification, male speaker; object/location relation inside the relative clause)
The head noun comes before the linker. ร้าน is understood as the subject of เปิด, while ห้อง is the place associated with ใช้ประชุม. ที่ does not translate English who, which, or that separately and does not mark tense. The full relative-clause guide develops gap interpretation.
Compare three structures with the same noun:
| Structure | Example | Role of ที่ |
|---|---|---|
| event + ที่ + place | รอที่ร้าน | locates waiting |
| noun + ที่ + clause | ร้านที่เปิดดึก | modifies ร้าน |
| property + ที่ + clause | ดีที่ร้านยังเปิด | links a proposition to an evaluation |
| classifier + ที่ + number | ร้านที่สอง | forms an ordinal |
ที่ after evaluations and reactions
Some predicates take ที่ + clause to introduce the situation being evaluated or reacted to. This use is (ordinary-to-formal) and often corresponds to English that or to rather than at.
ฉันดีใจที่คุณมาร่วมงานค่ะ
chan di chai thi khun ma ruam ngan kha
I'm glad that you came to the event. (ordinary polite reaction, female speaker)
น่าเสียดายที่รถเที่ยวสุดท้ายออกไปแล้วครับ
na siadai thi rot thiao sutthai ok pai laeo khrap
It's a pity that the last bus has already left. (ordinary polite evaluation, male speaker)
The clause after ที่ is complete: คุณมา and รถ...ออกไปแล้ว each have their own participant structure. This differs from a simple relative clause, where the head noun corresponds to an understood gap.
Ordinal ที่ is another construction
After a classifier or event noun, ที่ + number selects an ordinal: ชั้นที่สาม, ครั้งที่สอง, คนที่ห้า.
ห้องประชุมอยู่ชั้นที่สี่ครับ
hong prachum yu chan thi si khrap
The meeting room is on the fourth floor. (ordinary polite location, male speaker; ordinal ที่)
Here ที่ does not introduce a clause because สี่ is a numeral, not a predicate. Its function follows from the classifier-plus-number construction, not from a one-to-one lexical category.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A visitor asks where to collect a document:
ต้องไปรับบัตรที่ไหนคะ
tong pai rap bat thi nai kha
Where do I need to collect the card? (ordinary polite question, female visitor)
รับที่โต๊ะด้านในครับ โต๊ะที่มีป้ายสีน้ำเงิน
rap thi to dan nai khrap to thi mi pai si nam ngoen
Collect it at the desk inside—the desk with the blue sign. (ordinary polite reply, male staff member; locative ที่ followed by relative ที่)
ต้องไปที่ชั้นสองก่อนหรือเปล่าคะ
tong pai thi chan song kon rue plao kha
Do I need to go to the second floor first? (ordinary polite follow-up, female visitor)
ไม่ต้องครับ รอที่เดิมได้เลย
mai tong khrap ro thi doem dai loei
No. You can wait in the same place. (ordinary polite reply, male staff member; subject omitted as recoverable)
Common Mistakes
1. Translating English be at with เป็น
❌ ผู้จัดการเป็นที่สำนักงานค่ะ
Incorrect for physical location—use อยู่ before the place phrase.
✅ ผู้จัดการอยู่ที่สำนักงานชั้นห้าค่ะ
phu chatkan yu thi samnakngan chan ha kha
The manager is at the office on the fifth floor. (ordinary polite information, female speaker)
2. Using ที่ when the meaning is source
❌ ผู้หญิงคนนั้นโทรมาที่ข้างนอกค่ะ
Wrong for intended ‘called from outside’: ที่ locates an event, while a source requires จาก.
✅ ผู้หญิงคนนั้นโทรมาจากข้างนอกค่ะ
phu ying khon nan tho ma chak khang nok kha
That woman called from outside. (ordinary polite report, female speaker; source stated with จาก)
3. Putting a full relative clause before its head
❌ ที่ส่งข้อความเมื่อคืนลูกค้ารออยู่ครับ
Incorrect for the intended noun phrase—the head ลูกค้า must precede its ที่-clause.
✅ ลูกค้าที่ส่งข้อความเมื่อคืนยังรอคำตอบอยู่ครับ
luk kha thi song khokhwam muea khuen yang ro khamtop yu khrap
The customer who sent a message last night is still waiting for an answer. (ordinary polite update, male speaker)
4. Using ใน when only a destination point is intended
❌ กรุณาไปในเคาน์เตอร์หมายเลขสามค่ะ
Incorrect for going to a counter; ใน means entering or being inside a container-like ground.
✅ กรุณาไปที่เคาน์เตอร์หมายเลขสามค่ะ
karuna pai thi khaotoe mailek sam kha
Please go to counter number three. (formal-polite service instruction, female voice)
5. Splitting the verb from its object with a location
❌ ผมอ่านที่ห้องสมุดหนังสือเล่มนี้ครับ
Incorrect neutral order—the location splits อ่าน from its object หนังสือเล่มนี้.
✅ ผมอ่านหนังสือเล่มนี้ที่ห้องสมุดครับ
phom an nangsue lem ni thi hong samut khrap
I read this book at the library. (ordinary polite report, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- Locative ที่ + place presents a general point or setting; อยู่ที่ + place locates an identifiable entity.
- Familiar goals may follow ไป/มา directly, while ไปที่ + place makes the destination explicit.
- ที่นี่/ที่นั่น/ที่ไหน are place expressions built with deictic or question words.
- Relative noun + ที่ + clause, evaluative predicate + ที่ + clause, and ordinal classifier + ที่ + number are different constructions.
- Determine the role from position and complement shape rather than translating every ที่ as English at or that.
