Thai หรือ places two expressions in the same alternative set: ชาหรือกาแฟ means “tea or coffee.” The alternatives may be people, things, times, places, predicates, or whole propositions. หรือ stands between the units being contrasted and does not change their internal grammar.
In a question, the listener normally selects an option. In a statement, หรือ can offer permitted routes or describe uncertainty. Thai does not grammatically mark the logical distinction between inclusive or (“either or both”) and exclusive or (“one, not both”); situation, quantifiers, and added wording settle that distinction.
Put หรือ between expressions of the same scope
The general frame is A + หรือ + B. A and B should be interpretable as competing fillers of the same slot or as parallel propositions.
| Alternative type | Productive frame | Typical interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| noun phrase | verb + A + หรือ + B | choose an object or participant |
| time or place | event + A + หรือ + B | choose when or where the event holds |
| predicate | subject + predicate A + หรือ + predicate B | choose an action or state |
| full clause | clause A + หรือ + clause B | choose between different propositions |
| more than two | A, B + หรือ + C | หรือ normally introduces the final option |
| free-choice pair | ไม่ว่า A หรือ B ก็ + result | the result holds whichever option is chosen |
ส่งเอกสารทางอีเมลหรือทางไปรษณีย์ก็ได้ครับ
song ekkasan thang imel rue thang praisani ko dai khrap
You can send the documents by email or by post. (ordinary polite permission, male speaker; two acceptable methods)
เย็นนี้เราจะกินที่ร้านหรือสั่งกลับบ้านคะ
yen ni rao cha kin thi ran rue sang klap ban kha
This evening, will we eat at the restaurant or order takeaway? (ordinary polite choice question, female speaker; alternative predicates)
คุณจะพักก่อนก็ได้ หรือจะทำต่อเลยก็ได้ค่ะ
khun cha phak kon ko dai rue cha tham to loei ko dai kha
You can take a break first, or you can continue right away. (ordinary polite offer, female speaker; two fuller propositions)
The first sentence allows either method; it does not necessarily forbid using both. The dinner situation in the second normally favors one plan because the actions compete. หรือ itself does not encode that difference.
Minimal contrast: addition or alternatives
Compare a list whose members all apply with a set whose members compete.
กรุณาแนบสำเนาบัตรประชาชนกับใบเสร็จค่ะ
karuna naep samnao bat prachachon kap bai set kha
Please attach a copy of your ID card and the receipt. (ordinary polite instruction; both documents are required)
กรุณาแนบสำเนาบัตรประชาชนหรือสำเนาหนังสือเดินทางค่ะ
karuna naep samnao bat prachachon rue samnao nangsue doen thang kha
Please attach a copy of your ID card or a copy of your passport. (formal-polite instruction; either identity document can fill the requirement)
The first sentence builds an additive object containing two documents. The second opens one identity-document slot to alternatives. English articles do not determine the Thai form; สำเนาบัตรประชาชน and สำเนาหนังสือเดินทาง are understood through the administrative situation.
If both alternatives are explicitly allowed, Thai can add อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่ง “either one” for exactly one, or wording such as อย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งหรือทั้งสองอย่าง “either one or both” when precision matters (formal). Everyday speech usually relies on practical context.
Alternative questions versus polar questions
An alternative question has A หรือ B inside the answer slot. It expects the listener to name an alternative, not merely say ใช่ “yes.”
สะดวกประชุมเช้าวันจันทร์หรือบ่ายวันอังคารคะ
saduak prachum chao wan chan rue bai wan angkhan kha
Is Monday morning or Tuesday afternoon convenient for the meeting? (ordinary polite scheduling question, female speaker)
บ่ายวันอังคารครับ ช่วงเช้าผมติดสอน
bai wan angkhan khrap chuang chao phom tit son
Tuesday afternoon. I teach in the morning. (ordinary polite answer, male speaker; selected time repeated)
By contrast, clause-final หรือเปล่า asks whether one proposition holds: คุณว่างวันอังคารหรือเปล่าคะ “Are you free Tuesday or not?” The alternative-question page develops answer types and the distinction from หรือเปล่า. Here the connective หรือ is the medial link between genuine alternatives.
The polite particle follows the entire question. Placing คะ/ครับ after each option turns one choice into awkward separate fragments unless a speaker is deliberately restarting.
Shared material and omission
When both alternatives share a subject, object, or predicate, Thai normally states that material once. It does not repeat English auxiliary structure.
พรุ่งนี้จะให้ผมไปรับลูกค้าหรือไปส่งเอกสารครับ
phrung ni cha hai phom pai rap luk kha rue pai song ekkasan khrap
Tomorrow, do you want me to meet the client or deliver the documents? (ordinary polite question, male speaker; ให้ผม scopes over both alternatives)
เรานัดกันที่สถานีหรือหน้าโรงแรมดีคะ
rao nat kan thi sathani rue na rongraem di kha
Should we meet at the station or in front of the hotel? (ordinary polite planning question, female speaker; shared meeting predicate)
The first ไป is repeated because it belongs naturally to each directional action, but จะให้ผม appears once and scopes over the choice. In the second, only the location value changes. Repeating the whole clause is grammatical when contrast or clarity requires it, but not obligatory.
If one half is absent, the discourse must supply it. A reply such as หรือวันศุกร์ดีคะ “Or would Friday be better?” is natural only after another day has already been proposed. Initial หรือ signals that the speaker is adding an alternative to an active set.
วันพฤหัสบดีฉันติดประชุมค่ะ หรือวันศุกร์ดีคะ
wan pharuehatsabodi chan tit prachum kha rue wan suk di kha
I have a meeting on Thursday. Or would Friday be better? (ordinary polite rescheduling, female speaker; the earlier proposal is understood)
Without a prior proposal, หรือวันศุกร์ดีคะ leaves the listener asking “Friday or what?” This is discourse ellipsis, not a special conjugation of หรือ.
Positive–negative and free-choice pairs
Thai can state opposite predicates explicitly: ไปหรือไม่ไป “go or not go.” This is often firm, deliberative, or (formal). Ordinary neutral polar questions more commonly use ไหม or หรือเปล่า.
กรุณาแจ้งว่าจะเข้าร่วมงานหรือไม่เข้าร่วมภายในวันศุกร์ค่ะ
karuna chaeng wa cha khao ruam ngan rue mai khao ruam phai nai wan suk kha
Please say by Friday whether you will attend the event or not. (formal administrative request, female voice)
In the correlative ไม่ว่า A หรือ B ก็ Q, A and B remain alternatives, but Q is true for either selection. English often uses “whether A or B” or “no matter whether.”
ไม่ว่าฝนจะตกหรือแดดจะออก เราก็เปิดร้านตามปกติครับ
mai wa fon cha tok rue daet cha ok rao ko poet ran tam pakati khrap
Whether it rains or the sun shines, we open as usual. (ordinary polite policy statement, male speaker)
The pair ไม่ว่า...ก็... closes off the practical choice: the result does not vary. This differs from a question, where the listener must select an answer. The construction is explained more fully on the free-choice clause page.
Punctuation and longer alternatives
Short alternatives need no punctuation: ชาหรือกาแฟ. A written space or comma before หรือ may help when each option is a full clause, especially if subjects differ. The punctuation marks a phrase boundary; it is not artificial Thai word spacing.
คุณจะเซ็นสัญญาวันนี้ หรือให้ทนายตรวจอีกครั้งก่อนคะ
khun cha sen sanya wan ni rue hai thanai truat ik khrang kon kha
Will you sign the contract today, or have a lawyer review it once more first? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; two long alternatives)
Here the second clause changes predicate structure and introduces ทนาย as the reviewer. Keeping the full second option prevents it from being misread as another time expression.
Ordinary-polite dialogue
A customer chooses how to collect an order.
จะมารับเองหรือให้เราส่งถึงบ้านคะ
cha ma rap eng rue hai rao song thueng ban kha
Will you collect it yourself, or would you like us to deliver it to your home? (ordinary polite service question, female employee; customer omitted as recoverable addressee)
ให้ส่งถึงบ้านครับ พรุ่งนี้ช่วงบ่ายได้ไหมครับ
hai song thueng ban khrap phrung ni chuang bai dai mai khrap
Please deliver it to my home. Would tomorrow afternoon work? (ordinary polite answer, male customer)
ได้ค่ะ จะชำระเงินสดหรือโอนผ่านธนาคารคะ
dai kha cha chamra ngoen sot rue on phan thanakhan kha
Yes. Will you pay cash or by bank transfer? (ordinary polite choice question, female employee)
โอนผ่านธนาคารครับ เดี๋ยวส่งหลักฐานให้
on phan thanakhan khrap diao song lakthan hai
By bank transfer. I'll send the payment confirmation in a moment. (ordinary polite answer, male customer)
Each answer repeats only the selected value. The collection and payment frames remain recoverable, so Thai does not require a complete clause in every reply.
Common Mistakes
1. Putting หรือ outside the alternative slot
❌ หรือคุณจะรับชา กาแฟคะ
Incorrect—the two drink options must stand on opposite sides of หรือ.
✅ คุณจะรับชาหรือกาแฟคะ
khun cha rap cha rue kafae kha
Will you have tea or coffee? (ordinary polite choice question, female speaker)
2. Answering a choice with bare ใช่
❌ นัดวันจันทร์หรือวันอังคารคะ — ใช่ครับ
Incorrect answer shape—ใช่ does not reveal which day was selected.
✅ นัดวันจันทร์หรือวันอังคารคะ — วันอังคารครับ
nat wan chan rue wan angkhan kha wan angkhan khrap
Is the appointment Monday or Tuesday? — Tuesday. (ordinary polite exchange)
3. Repeating the polite particle inside one choice
❌ ส่งเช้าคะหรือบ่ายคะ
Incorrect neutral phrasing—the female question particle belongs after the complete alternative set.
✅ ส่งตอนเช้าหรือตอนบ่ายคะ
song ton chao rue ton bai kha
Should it be delivered in the morning or afternoon? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
4. Leaving a changed predicate incomplete
❌ คุณจะมารับเองหรือบริษัทคะ
Incomplete—the second option names a company but does not say what the company will do.
✅ คุณจะมารับเองหรือให้บริษัทขนส่งมารับคะ
khun cha ma rap eng rue hai borisat khon song ma rap kha
Will you collect it yourself, or have the delivery company collect it? (ordinary polite question, female speaker)
5. Assuming หรือ always excludes both options together
❌ แนบสำเนาบัตรประชาชนหรือสำเนาหนังสือเดินทางค่ะ
Insufficient for an intended exactly-one rule—หรือ alone does not necessarily forbid providing both documents.
✅ แนบสำเนาบัตรประชาชนหรือสำเนาหนังสือเดินทางอย่างใดอย่างหนึ่งค่ะ
naep samnao bat prachachon rue samnao nangsue doen thang yang dai yang nueng kha
Attach either a copy of your ID card or a copy of your passport. (formal-polite instruction; exactly one is made explicit)
Key Takeaways
- Put หรือ between parallel alternatives in the slot where one answer or value would occur.
- Context determines whether one or several options may apply; หรือ alone does not encode exclusive logic.
- State changed subjects and enough of each long clause to keep the alternatives parallel and clear.
- Use medial A หรือ B for a choice, and distinguish it from clause-final หรือเปล่า for a polar question.
