Choose มี when a person or domain has something, when something is available, or when a scene is said to contain an entity. Choose อยู่ when the listener can identify an entity and needs to know where it is; after another predicate, อยู่ can also keep a state or activity in view. English often uses have, there is, or be, but Thai organizes the contrast through predicate choice and information structure.
Compare ในกล่องมีกุญแจ “There is a key in the box” with กุญแจอยู่ในกล่อง “The key is in the box.” The physical scene can be identical. The first updates the listener about the box’s contents; the second updates the listener about a known key’s location. The broader word-order account is on existential and locative order.
Quick comparison
| Decision | มี | อยู่ |
|---|---|---|
| Core job | possess, contain, make available, introduce existence | locate an identifiable entity; maintain a situation |
| Typical locational frame | place + มี + entity | entity + อยู่ + place |
| Question answered | “What/who is there?” or “Does X have Y?” | “Where is X?” |
| Information status | often introduces the entity | normally starts from an identifiable entity |
| Negative | ไม่มี: absent or not possessed | ไม่อยู่: not at the relevant place |
| Combination | มี + entity + อยู่ + place can introduce and then situate one entity | |
Decision tree
Step 1: Is there a possessor or containing domain?
Use domain + มี + possessed item. The domain can be a person, organization, room, device, schedule, or abstract situation.
ผมมีนัดตรวจฟันตอนสิบโมงครับ
phom mi nat truat fan ton sip mong khrap
I have a dental appointment at ten. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; schedule as possessing domain)
ห้องฝั่งนี้มีหน้าต่างสามบานค่ะ
hong fang ni mi natang sam ban kha
This room on this side has three windows. (ordinary polite description, female speaker; containing domain and window classifier บาน)
ร้านเรามีบริการส่งถึงบ้านครับ
ran rao mi borikan song thueng ban khrap
Our shop offers home delivery. (ordinary polite business information, male speaker; service availability)
English have may suggest ownership, but Thai มี is broader: the room contains windows, the shop makes a service available, and the speaker’s schedule contains an appointment.
Step 2: Are you introducing what exists at a place?
Use place + มี + entity. Thai does not add a dummy equivalent of English existential there.
ข้างทางออกมีตู้กดน้ำหนึ่งตู้ค่ะ
khang thang ok mi tu kot nam nueng tu kha
There is one water dispenser beside the exit. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; a new facility introduced)
บนชั้นสองมีเจ้าหน้าที่คอยให้คำแนะนำครับ
bon chan song mi chaonathi khoi hai kham nae nam khrap
There is a staff member on the second floor who can advise you. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; person introduced in a scene)
เย็นนี้ที่ศูนย์ชุมชนมีการแสดงดนตรีค่ะ
yen ni thi sun chumchon mi kan sadaeng dontri kha
There is a music performance at the community center this evening. (formal-neutral announcement, female speaker; event existence)
The entity after มี is often new, but “new versus old noun” is not an iron law. The dependable distinction is the update: scene contents and availability versus whereabouts.
Step 3: Is the entity already identifiable and location is the point?
Use entity + อยู่ + place.
ตู้กดน้ำที่ถามหาอยู่ข้างทางออกค่ะ
tu kot nam thi tham ha yu khang thang ok kha
The water dispenser you asked about is beside the exit. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; identifiable facility located)
เจ้าหน้าที่คนนั้นอยู่ที่โต๊ะหมายเลขหกครับ
chaonathi khon nan yu thi to mailek hok khrap
That staff member is at table number six. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; demonstrative identifies the person)
บัตรเข้าชมของคุณอยู่ในซองสีฟ้าค่ะ
bat khao chom khong khun yu nai song si fa kha
Your admission ticket is in the blue envelope. (polite service information, female speaker; possessed ticket located)
Names, possessors, demonstratives, relative clauses, and shared context can all make an entity identifiable. Thai does not need an article to mark that status.
Step 4: Is อยู่ after an action or property?
Then it may signal continuation instead of physical location.
ระบบสำรองยังทำงานอยู่ครับ
rabop samrong yang tham ngan yu khrap
The backup system is still operating. (formal-neutral report, male speaker; continuing activity)
This predicate + อยู่ construction is structurally different from entity + อยู่ + place. It does not compete with existential มี in the same slot.
Minimal pairs: same scene, different update
ในซองสีฟ้ามีบัตรเข้าชมสองใบค่ะ
nai song si fa mi bat khao chom song bai kha
There are two admission tickets in the blue envelope. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; contents introduced)
บัตรเข้าชมสองใบอยู่ในซองสีฟ้าค่ะ
bat khao chom song bai yu nai song si fa kha
The two admission tickets are in the blue envelope. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; known pair located)
วันนี้ที่คลินิกมีหมอเด็กครับ
wan ni thi khlinik mi mo dek khrap
There is a pediatrician at the clinic today. (ordinary polite availability report, male speaker)
วันนี้หมอเด็กอยู่ที่คลินิกครับ
wan ni mo dek yu thi khlinik khrap
The pediatrician is at the clinic today. (ordinary polite location report, male speaker; doctor treated as identifiable)
The lexical nouns and place remain nearly constant. The word order reveals whether the speaker presents an available participant or locates one already under discussion.
When มี and อยู่ occur together
Thai can introduce an entity with มี and then place it with an activity or locative อยู่: มีลูกค้ารออยู่หน้าห้อง “There is a customer waiting outside the room.” This is not redundancy. มี presents the customer; รออยู่ maintains the waiting situation; หน้าห้อง supplies the place.
มีพัสดุวางอยู่หน้าประตูสองกล่องครับ
mi phatsadu wang yu na pratu song klong khrap
There are two parcels sitting outside the door. (ordinary polite report, male speaker; entity introduced, state maintained, classifier phrase final)
ข้อมูลที่ต้องการมีอยู่ในรายงานฉบับเต็มค่ะ
khomun thi tongkan mi yu nai raingan chabap tem kha
The required information does exist in the full report. (formal-neutral assurance, female speaker; มีอยู่ emphasizes actual availability/existence)
In มีอยู่, the combination can emphasize that something exists or remains available. Do not infer that every existential sentence needs อยู่; plain มี is sufficient for neutral existence.
Ambiguous context: add a cue
The English sentence “The meeting room is downstairs” could answer two different questions. Thai resolves them by construction.
ชั้นล่างมีห้องประชุมเล็กหนึ่งห้องค่ะ
chan lang mi hong prachum lek nueng hong kha
There is one small meeting room downstairs. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; room introduced as a facility)
ห้องประชุมที่เราจองไว้อยู่ชั้นล่างค่ะ
hong prachum thi rao chong wai yu chan lang kha
The meeting room we reserved is downstairs. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; relative clause identifies the room)
The added cues หนึ่งห้อง and ที่เราจองไว้ make the intended information status explicit. Deictic ที่นี่/ตรงนี้ can anchor the scene, but it does not by itself decide between introducing contents and locating a known item.
Time, scope, and negative contrasts
Both predicates are invariant. Time and aspect surround them rather than changing their form.
เมื่อก่อนตรงนี้มีร้านซ่อมรองเท้าครับ
muea kon trong ni mi ran som rong thao khrap
There used to be a shoe-repair shop here. (ordinary polite historical report, male speaker; past existence supplied by เมื่อก่อน)
ร้านซ่อมรองเท้ายังอยู่ในซอยเดิมค่ะ
ran som rong thao yang yu nai soi doem kha
The shoe-repair shop is still in the same lane. (ordinary polite update, female speaker; known shop and continuing location)
Negative ไม่มี denies possession, availability, or existence in the relevant domain. ไม่อยู่ presupposes an identifiable entity and denies only its presence at one place.
อาคารนี้ไม่มีห้องพยาบาลครับ
akhan ni mai mi hong phayaban khrap
This building has no first-aid room. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; local absence)
ห้องพยาบาลไม่อยู่ในอาคารนี้ค่ะ
hong phayaban mai yu nai akhan ni kha
The first-aid room isn't in this building. (ordinary polite correction, female speaker; relevant room exists elsewhere)
Ordinary-polite dialogue
ในห้องรับรองมีปลั๊กไฟไหมคะ
nai hong raprong mi plak fai mai kha
Are there electrical outlets in the waiting room? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; asks about facilities)
มีครับ จุดหนึ่งอยู่ใต้โต๊ะยาว อีกจุดอยู่ใกล้ประตู
mi khrap chut nueng yu tai to yao ik chut yu klai pratu
Yes. One is under the long table, and the other is near the door. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; availability confirmed, then both outlets located)
แล้วปลั๊กที่อยู่ใกล้ประตูใช้ได้ไหมคะ
laeo plak thi yu klai pratu chai dai mai kha
And does the outlet near the door work? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; known outlet identified by location)
จุดนั้นเสียครับ แต่จุดใต้โต๊ะยังใช้ได้
chut nan sia khrap tae chut tai to yang chai dai
That point is broken, but the one under the table still works. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker)
Formal dialogue
ในพื้นที่โครงการมีศูนย์รับเรื่องร้องเรียนหรือไม่คะ
nai phuenthi khrongkan mi sun rap rueang rongrian rue mai kha
Is there a complaints center in the project area? (formal meeting question, female speaker; institutional existence)
มีครับ ศูนย์ดังกล่าวอยู่ติดกับอาคารอำนวยการ
mi khrap sun dang klao yu tit kap akhan amnuaikan
Yes. That center is next to the administration building. (formal reply, male speaker; introduced center then located)
ขณะนี้มีเจ้าหน้าที่ประจำอยู่กี่คนคะ
khana ni mi chaonathi pracham yu ki khon kha
How many officers are currently stationed there? (formal question, female speaker; personnel availability with human classifier)
มีเจ้าหน้าที่ประจำอยู่ห้าคนครับ
mi chaonathi pracham yu ha khon khrap
There are five officers stationed there. (formal reply, male speaker; existence plus continuing assignment)
Common Mistakes
1. Using มี to locate a known item
❌ กุญแจสำรองของร้านมีในลิ้นชักครับ
Incorrect for locating the identifiable spare key; use อยู่.
✅ กุญแจสำรองของร้านอยู่ในลิ้นชักล่างครับ
kunchae samrong khong ran yu nai linchak lang khrap
The shop's spare key is in the lower drawer. (ordinary polite information, male speaker)
2. Using อยู่ to introduce a new entity
❌ หลังอาคารอยู่จักรยานสองคันค่ะ
Incorrect for introducing two bicycles into the scene; use มี.
✅ หลังอาคารมีจักรยานจอดอยู่สองคันค่ะ
lang akhan mi chakkayan chot yu song khan kha
There are two bicycles parked behind the building. (ordinary polite information, female speaker; existence plus situated state)
3. Adding an English dummy “there”
❌ มันมีร้านถ่ายเอกสารตรงข้ามโรงเรียนครับ
Incorrect for neutral existential ‘there’; มัน introduces an unintended referent rather than serving as an empty subject.
✅ ตรงข้ามโรงเรียนมีร้านถ่ายเอกสารครับ
trong kham rongrian mi ran thai ekkasan khrap
There is a photocopy shop opposite the school. (ordinary polite information, male speaker; location-first existential)
4. Treating ไม่มี and ไม่อยู่ as synonyms
❌ วันนี้ผู้จัดการไม่มีที่สำนักงานค่ะ
Wrong for saying where the identifiable manager is not; ไม่มี suggests nonexistence or lack, not absence from this location.
✅ วันนี้ผู้จัดการไม่อยู่ที่สำนักงานค่ะ
wan ni phu chatkan mai yu thi samnakngan kha
The manager isn't at the office today. (ordinary polite information, female speaker)
5. Adding อยู่ to every มี sentence
❌ ร้านนี้มีอยู่บริการซักแห้งครับ
Incorrect order; plain มี introduces the available service without an inserted อยู่.
✅ ร้านนี้มีบริการซักแห้งครับ
ran ni mi borikan sak haeng khrap
This shop offers dry-cleaning. (ordinary polite business information, male speaker)
Key Takeaways
- มี asserts possession, availability, or existence; อยู่ locates an identifiable entity or maintains a situation.
- place + มี + entity and entity + อยู่ + place can describe the same world while answering different questions.
- The combined frame มี + entity + predicate + อยู่ + place introduces and situates an entity in layers.
- ไม่มี denies existence in a domain; ไม่อยู่ denies presence at a location.
