Choosing ให้ versus ทำให้

Thai ให้ and ทำให้ can both appear in English translations with make, have, let, or cause, but their constructions direct attention to different parts of the causal chain. ให้ introduces a participant who performs or controls the following action: someone lets, has, tells, or arranges for that participant to act. ทำให้ links a cause to a resulting event or state: noise causes someone to wake, news makes someone happy, or a delay makes costs rise.

The most useful contrast is therefore causee plus action versus cause plus result. Social force—permission, instruction, arrangement—helps interpret bare ให้, while ทำให้ foregrounds the outcome and can take an event or an inanimate condition as its subject.

Decision tree

  1. Does the following participant perform the next action? Use ให้ + causee + action: ให้ช่างตรวจเครื่อง “have the technician inspect the machine.”
  2. Does a cause bring about a state or event in an affected participant? Use ทำให้ + result-holder + result: ความร้อนทำให้เครื่องดับ “the heat caused the machine to shut down.”
  3. Is permission versus command important? Bare ให้ can be interpreted by relationship and context. Add อนุญาตให้ for permission, สั่งให้ for an order, or มอบหมายให้ for formal assignment.
  4. Is ให้ actually lexical “give” or benefactive “for”? ให้หนังสือกับเด็ก transfers a book; ซื้อหนังสือให้เด็ก buys it for the child. Neither is the same as causative ให้เด็กอ่านหนังสือ.
  5. Where does negation scope? ไม่ให้เด็กออก denies permission or prevents exit; ทำให้เด็กไม่ออก causes the child not to leave; ไม่ทำให้เด็กออก denies causing the exit.
  6. What aspect is present? กำลังให้ช่างตรวจ frames an ongoing arrangement/inspection; กำลังทำให้ต้นทุนสูงขึ้น frames an ongoing causal development. The causative expressions do not conjugate.
  7. What register and relationship apply? In formal writing, select a specific verb such as อนุญาตให้, มอบหมายให้, or ส่งผลให้ when institutional force or causal style matters.

Deictic center does not choose the causative expression. A cause can be near or far from the speaker; what matters is whether the following participant controls an action or undergoes a result. Social relationship then helps resolve permission, instruction, and arrangement readings of bare ให้.

💡
Find the participant immediately after the causative expression. After ให้, that participant normally does the next action. After ทำให้, that participant normally undergoes or experiences the following result.

Minimal pairs: actor versus result-holder

Hold ฉันยิ้ม constant:

เขาให้ฉันยิ้มตอนถ่ายรูปค่ะ

khao hai chan yim ton thai rup kha

He had/asked me to smile for the photo. (female speaker; ฉัน controls the requested action)

เขาทำให้ฉันยิ้มได้ค่ะ

khao tham hai chan yim dai kha

He managed to make me smile. (female speaker; ฉัน experiences the resulting smile)

The first readily describes a photographer's direction. The second says the person's behavior caused the smile; it does not by itself imply an order.

Now compare a workplace action:

หัวหน้าให้ผมแก้รายงานครับ

hua na hai phom kae raingan khrap

The supervisor had me revise the report. (male speaker; assigned actor plus action)

ข้อเสนอแนะทำให้ผมแก้รายงานใหม่ครับ

kho sanoe nae tham hai phom kae raingan mai khrap

The feedback caused me to revise the report again. (male speaker; inanimate information causes a resulting action)

An inanimate subject such as ข้อเสนอแนะ strongly favors ทำให้ because it has no social authority to permit or assign the action.

The participant structure of ให้

In causer + ให้ + causee + predicate, the causee is interpreted as the subject of the following predicate:

พรุ่งนี้เราจะให้ช่างเปลี่ยนสายไฟครับ

phrung ni rao cha hai chang plian sai fai khrap

Tomorrow we'll have an electrician replace the wiring. (male speaker; ช่าง performs เปลี่ยน)

The exact force comes from the relationship. A parent may allow a child, a manager may assign staff, and a customer may arrange for a technician. When ambiguity matters, do not ask bare ให้ to carry it alone:

ผู้จัดการอนุญาตให้ทีมกลับบ้านก่อนค่ะ

phu chatkan anuyat hai thim klap ban kon kha

The manager allowed the team to go home early. (formal-neutral report, female speaker; permission explicit)

ผู้จัดการสั่งให้ทีมกลับบ้านก่อนค่ะ

phu chatkan sang hai thim klap ban kon kha

The manager ordered the team to go home early. (formal-neutral report, female speaker; command explicit)

These hold the complement constant and add the cue that resolves the social relationship. Polite particles do not themselves distinguish permission from command.

The result structure of ทำให้

The subject before ทำให้ may be a person, event, object, or condition. What follows describes the result affecting another participant or situation.

เสียงโทรศัพท์ทำให้ลูกตื่นค่ะ

siang thorasap tham hai luk tuen kha

The phone ringing woke the child. (female speaker; sound causes a change of state)

ฝนที่ตกหนักทำให้ถนนหลายสายปิดครับ

fon thi tok nak tham hai thanon lai sai pit khrap

The heavy rain caused several roads to close. (formal-neutral report, male speaker; event causes result)

ข่าวดีทำให้ทุกคนสบายใจขึ้นค่ะ

khao di tham hai thuk khon sabai chai khuen kha

The good news made everyone feel more at ease. (female speaker; information causes an emotional result)

In each case, replacing ทำให้ with bare ให้ would suggest an agentive or directive relation that the inanimate cause cannot naturally sustain.

Keep lexical and benefactive ให้ separate

ให้ also means “give” and marks a beneficiary after an action. Position reveals the role:

คุณตาให้จักรยานคันเก่ากับหลานครับ

khun ta hai chakkrayan khan kao kap lan khrap

Grandfather gave the old bicycle to his grandchild. (male speaker; lexical transfer, with classifier plus adjective)

คุณตาซ่อมจักรยานให้หลานครับ

khun ta som chakkrayan hai lan khrap

Grandfather repaired the bicycle for his grandchild. (male speaker; benefactive ให้ after the object)

คุณตาให้หลานซ่อมจักรยานครับ

khun ta hai lan som chakkrayan khrap

Grandfather had the grandchild repair the bicycle. (male speaker; causative ให้ before the causee)

This three-way contrast is exactly why English word matching fails. The benefactive ให้ page covers the postverbal beneficiary in depth.

💡
For literal transfer, keep the theme before a recipient introduced with กับ: ให้จักรยานกับหลาน. For benefit, place ให้ + beneficiary after the completed action and its object. For causation, place ให้ + causee before the action that causee performs.

Negation and scope

Negation before ให้ denies permission, assignment, or causation. Negation after the causee belongs to the caused action.

โรงเรียนไม่ให้นักเรียนใช้โทรศัพท์ในห้องเรียนค่ะ

rongrian mai hai nakrian chai thorasap nai hong rian kha

The school does not allow students to use phones in class. (formal-neutral rule, female speaker; permission denied)

ครูให้กลุ่มนี้ไม่ใช้เครื่องคิดเลขครับ

khru hai klum ni mai chai khrueang khit lek khrap

The teacher has this group not use calculators. (male speaker; negative action inside the assignment)

With ทำให้, placement gives a different contrast:

การปรับระบบไม่ทำให้ข้อมูลหายครับ

kan prap rabop mai tham hai khomun hai khrap

The system adjustment does not cause data loss. (formal report, male speaker; causation denied)

ข้อผิดพลาดนี้ทำให้ระบบไม่ส่งอีเมลค่ะ

kho phit phlat ni tham hai rabop mai song imel kha

This error causes the system not to send email. (formal-neutral report, female speaker; negative result caused)

The causative negation guide develops these scope contrasts.

Aspect and temporal viewpoint

ฝ่ายอาคารกำลังให้ช่างตรวจลิฟต์อยู่ค่ะ

fai akhan kamlang hai chang truat lip yu kha

Building management is having a technician inspect the elevator. (female speaker; ongoing arranged event)

การก่อสร้างกำลังทำให้การจราจรช้าลงครับ

kan kosang kamlang tham hai kan charachon cha long khrap

The construction is causing traffic to slow down. (male speaker; ongoing causal development)

Thai does not change ให้ or ทำให้ for present, past, or future. กำลัง...อยู่, แล้ว, จะ, and time expressions establish the viewpoint and take scope over the relevant part of the chain.

When one choice is impossible

If there is only a transfer, causative ทำให้ is impossible:

แม่ให้เงินค่ารถกับลูกค่ะ

mae hai ngoen kha rot kap luk kha

Mother gave her child money for transportation. (female speaker; theme before recipient with กับ; transfer, not causation)

If an inanimate cause produces a result, bare agentive ให้ is unavailable for the intended reading:

อากาศร้อนทำให้อาหารเสียเร็วค่ะ

akat ron tham hai ahan sia reo kha

Hot weather makes food spoil quickly. (female speaker; condition causes result)

อากาศร้อนให้อาหารเสียเร็ว is not the neutral causative equivalent.

Formal dialogue

คณะกรรมการจะมอบหมายให้ฝ่ายกฎหมายตรวจสัญญาครับ

khana kammakan cha mopmai hai fai kotmai truat sanya khrap

The committee will assign the legal department to review the contract. (formal report, male speaker; assignment explicit)

การตรวจเพิ่มเติมจะทำให้กำหนดการล่าช้าหรือไม่คะ

kan truat phoemtoem cha tham hai kamnotkan lacha rue mai kha

Will the additional review cause the schedule to be delayed? (formal-polite question, female speaker; causal result)

อาจล่าช้าหนึ่งวันครับ แต่จะไม่ทำให้งบประมาณเพิ่ม

at lacha nueng wan khrap tae cha mai tham hai ngoppraman phoem

It may be delayed by one day, but it will not cause the budget to increase. (formal reply, male speaker)

Formal vocabulary makes the relationship precise: มอบหมายให้ is assignment; ทำให้ reports consequence. A written report might replace ทำให้ with ส่งผลให้, but no separate formal syntax is involved.

Ordinary-polite dialogue

คืนนี้ให้ลูกนอนห้องเราดีไหมคะ

khuen ni hai luk non hong rao di mai kha

Shall we let the child sleep in our room tonight? (ordinary polite question, female speaker; proposed permission)

ได้ครับ เสียงฟ้าร้องทำให้เขากลัว

dai khrap siang fa rong tham hai khao klua

Sure. The thunder is making him scared. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; cause plus emotional result)

งั้นฉันจะให้เขาเอาหมอนมาด้วยค่ะ

ngan chan cha hai khao ao mon ma duai kha

Then I'll have him bring his pillow too. (ordinary polite reply, female speaker; child performs the action)

ดีครับ จะได้ทำให้เขาสบายใจขึ้น

di khrap cha dai tham hai khao sabai chai khuen

Good. That should help make him feel more at ease. (ordinary polite reply, male speaker; resulting state)

Common Mistakes

1. Using ทำให้ for an assigned actor

❌ ผมทำให้ช่างตรวจรถพรุ่งนี้ครับ

Wrong for the intended “I'll have the mechanic inspect the car”; this wording pushes toward causing the mechanic to inspect, not the neutral service arrangement.

✅ ผมจะให้ช่างตรวจรถพรุ่งนี้ครับ

phom cha hai chang truat rot phrung ni khrap

I'll have the mechanic inspect the car tomorrow. (male speaker; arranged actor and action)

2. Using bare ให้ for an inanimate causal result

❌ ฝุ่นให้ฉันไอทั้งวันค่ะ

Incorrect neutral causal frame; inanimate dust brings about a result with ทำให้.

✅ ฝุ่นทำให้ฉันไอทั้งวันค่ะ

fun tham hai chan ai thang wan kha

The dust made me cough all day. (female speaker; cause plus resulting event)

3. Confusing beneficiary and causee by order

✅ ฉันทำข้าวต้มให้แม่ค่ะ

chan tham khao tom hai mae kha

I made rice porridge for Mother. (female speaker; beneficiary after the object)

✅ ฉันให้แม่ทำข้าวต้มค่ะ

chan hai mae tham khao tom kha

I had/let Mother make rice porridge. (female speaker; causee before the action)

4. Reversing negative scope

❌ พ่อให้ลูกไม่ออกจากบ้านครับ

Wrong for the intended “Father does not allow the child to leave home”; this order places negation inside the caused action.

✅ พ่อไม่ให้ลูกออกไปคืนนี้ครับ

pho mai hai luk ok pai khuen ni khrap

Father does not allow the child to go out tonight. (male speaker; permission denied)

5. Copying English tense or infinitive marking

❌ หัวหน้าเป็นให้ฉันที่จะโทรหาลูกค้าค่ะ

Incorrect: Thai uses neither a copula as past/present marking nor ที่จะ as an obligatory infinitive in this causative frame.

✅ หัวหน้าให้ฉันโทรหาลูกค้าเมื่อเช้าค่ะ

hua na hai chan tho ha luk kha muea chao kha

The supervisor had me call the customer this morning. (female speaker; time phrase locates unchanged verbs)

Key Takeaways

  • Use ให้ + causee + action when the following participant performs or controls the caused event.
  • Use ทำให้ + result-holder + result when a person, event, or condition brings about an outcome.
  • Relationship supplies bare ให้ with permission, order, or arrangement readings; use a specific verb when that force matters.
  • Keep lexical give, benefactive for, causative ให้, and resultative ทำให้ structurally distinct.
  • Negation and aspect follow scope, not English tense or infinitive templates.
