Thai causatives contain two linked situations: someone or something supplies the cause, permission, or instruction, and another participant undergoes or carries out the result. Negation can reject the first link or make the second situation negative. English often hides this contrast inside didn't make, made ... not, wouldn't let, or prevented, but Thai normally makes it visible through word order.
The central contrast is ไม่/ไม่ได้ + causative frame versus causative frame + causee + ไม่/ไม่ได้ + result. This page uses frames ending in ให้ for permission or direction and ทำให้ for a cause–result relation. Both kinds are common in standard Central Thai, but the particular framing verb matters: bare ให้ is more context-dependent than explicit อนุญาตให้ “permit,” กำชับให้ “firmly instruct,” or ทำให้ “cause.”
Two possible homes for negation
With a causative or directive frame ending in ให้, the participant after ให้ is the causee: the person expected, permitted, or directed to perform the following predicate. Negation before the whole frame can deny permission or direction. Negation after the causee instead belongs to that person's lower action.
แม่ไม่ให้ลูกออกไปเล่นค่ะ
mae mai hai luk ok pai len kha
Mom won't let the child go out to play.
แม่กำชับให้ลูกไม่เปิดประตูให้คนแปลกหน้าค่ะ
mae kamchap hai luk mai poet pratu hai khon plaek na kha
Mom firmly instructs the child not to open the door to strangers.
The first sentence rejects ให้ลูกออกไปเล่น as a whole: permission is withheld. The second explicitly asserts a directive with กำชับให้, while the instructed action is ไม่เปิดประตู. Bare แม่ให้ลูกไม่เปิดประตู can be forced into that inner-negation reading, but it sounds compressed in ordinary conversation. Thai normally supplies a clearer framing verb or says บอกลูกว่าอย่าเปิดประตู “tell the child not to open the door.”
With ทำให้, the outer predicate asserts a causal link. Negation before ทำให้ denies that link; negation after the affected participant describes the result that the cause produces.
เสียงจากข้างนอกไม่ได้ทำให้เด็กตื่นครับ
siang chak khang nok mai dai tham hai dek tuen khrap
The noise outside didn't cause the child to wake up.
เสียงก่อสร้างทำให้เด็กนอนไม่หลับครับ
siang ko sang tham hai dek non mai lap khrap
The construction noise makes it impossible for the child to sleep.
In the first example, the child may have awakened for another reason; the speaker denies only this proposed cause. In the second, the causal link is asserted and the resulting state is negative. This is a scope contrast, not a tense contrast. ไม่ได้ commonly denies an event or connection in context, while ไม่ gives general, habitual, or forward-looking negation; time still comes from the discourse and time expressions.
The participants do not disappear
The basic causative template adds a causer while preserving the causee as the understood subject of the result predicate:
| Causer | Outer negation | Causative | Causee | Inner negation | Result |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| หัวหน้า | ไม่ | ให้ | ทีม | — | หยุดพัก |
| หัวหน้า | — | กำชับให้ | ทีม | ไม่ | หยุดพัก |
| ฝน | ไม่ได้ | ทำให้ | งาน | — | ล่าช้า |
| ฝน | — | ทำให้ | เรา | ไม่ | ออกไปข้างนอก |
หัวหน้าไม่ให้ทีมหยุดพักตอนนี้ครับ
huana mai hai thim yut phak ton ni khrap
The manager won't let the team take a break now.
หัวหน้ากำชับให้ทีมไม่หยุดพักระหว่างการถ่ายทอดสดครับ
huana kamchap hai thim mai yut phak rawang kan thaithot sot khrap
The manager firmly instructs the team not to take a break during the live broadcast.
The second sentence uses กำชับให้ to make the directing relation explicit before the negative lower action. Another natural choice is สั่งไม่ให้ทีมหยุดพัก “order the team not to take a break.” That conventional directive shows why position is not the only clue: although ไม่ precedes ให้ inside สั่งไม่ให้, the whole frame still assigns a negative action. Parse the complete lexical frame, not just the nearest ให้.
Causers and causees may be omitted when the conversation identifies them. This is ordinary Thai argument omission, not agreement or passive morphology.
อย่าเปิดแอร์แรงเกินไปนะคะ เดี๋ยวทำให้ไม่สบายค่ะ
aya poet ae raeng koen pai na kha diao tham hai mai sabai kha
Please don't turn the air conditioner up too high; it could make you ill.
The affected person after ให้ is understood from the conversation. English normally requires you or people here; Thai does not insert a dummy or obligatory pronoun.
ให้ and ทำให้ make different commitments
ให้ + causee + predicate is especially natural for permission, enabling, instructions, and arrangements involving an agentive person. It does not by itself guarantee that the person completed the action. ทำให้ + affected participant + result presents the first situation as bringing about the second, so it commits the speaker more strongly to a causal connection.
ผมกำชับให้ช่างไม่เปลี่ยนอะไหล่ชิ้นนั้นครับ
phom kamchap hai chang mai plian alai chin nan khrap
I firmly instructed the technician not to replace that part.
การซ่อมครั้งนี้ทำให้เครื่องไม่สั่นแล้วครับ
kan som khrang ni tham hai khrueang mai san laeo khrap
This repair has made the machine stop vibrating.
The first causee, ช่าง, still controls the intended action. The second subject, เครื่อง, simply undergoes the resulting state. An inanimate causer such as rain, noise, or a repair is therefore natural with ทำให้ but normally not with directive ให้.
Aspect markers retain their own scope. In ทำให้เครื่องไม่สั่นแล้ว, sentence-final แล้ว presents the non-vibrating result as the new current state. It does not turn ทำให้ into a past-tense verb. Likewise, กำลัง can locate an ongoing causing process if that construal is plausible.
ทีมงานกำลังทำให้ระบบกลับมาใช้งานได้ครับ
thim ngan kamlang tham hai rabop klap ma chai ngan dai khrap
The team is getting the system working again.
For the general placement of ไม่ and ไม่ได้, compare negative scope and negation in serial-verb chains.
An ordinary-polite dialogue
คุณให้ช่างปิดน้ำหรือยังคะ
khun hai chang pit nam rue yang kha
Have you had the technician turn off the water yet?
ยังครับ ผมกำชับเขาไว้ว่ายังไม่ต้องปิดตอนที่เรากำลังล้างถังครับ
yang khrap phom kamchap khao wai wa yang mai tong pit ton thi rao kamlang lang thang khrap
Not yet. I made it clear that he shouldn't turn it off while we're cleaning the tank.
งั้นอย่าให้เขารอนานนะคะ
ngan aya hai khao ro nan na kha
Then please don't make him wait long.
The reply states its negative instruction transparently with กำชับ...ว่า...ยังไม่ต้องปิด. The last turn instead prohibits the whole causal situation with อย่าให้เขารอนาน. Polite particles attach to the full utterance, outside the relevant scope domain.
Common Mistakes
1. Negating the result when you mean to deny permission
❌ ครูให้นักเรียนไม่กลับบ้านค่ะ
Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘The teacher does not allow the students to go home’; this says the teacher directs them not to go home.
✅ ครูไม่ให้นักเรียนกลับบ้านค่ะ
khru mai hai nakrian klap ban kha
The teacher doesn't allow the students to go home.
2. Denying causation when the actual result is negative
❌ ฝนไม่ได้ทำให้เราออกไปข้างนอกครับ
Incorrect for ‘The rain caused us not to go outside’; this denies that the rain caused us to go outside.
✅ ฝนทำให้เราไม่ได้ออกไปข้างนอกครับ
fon tham hai rao mai dai ok pai khang nok khrap
The rain kept us from going outside.
3. Copying English auxiliary order
❌ ทำไม่ให้เด็กกลัวนะคะ
Incorrect ordinary order for ‘Don't make the child afraid.’
✅ อย่าทำให้เด็กกลัวนะคะ
aya tham hai dek klua na kha
Don't frighten the child.
Thai negative commands normally use อย่า before the predicate. The sequence ทำไม่ให้ can occur only under a different, specially built interpretation; it is not a mechanical translation of English do not make.
4. Treating ให้ as a tense auxiliary
❌ เมื่อวานเขาให้ซ่อมรถของเขาครับ
Incorrect for the intended meaning ‘He repaired his car yesterday’; ให้ creates the different reading ‘He had his car repaired.’
✅ เมื่อวานเขาซ่อมรถของเขาครับ
muea wan khao som rot khong khao khrap
He repaired his car yesterday.
Thai verbs do not conjugate here, and adjacent verbs are not automatically English-style infinitives. Order identifies which participant belongs to which predicate.
Key Takeaways
- ไม่/ไม่ได้ + ให้/ทำให้ ... negates permission, direction, or the causal link.
- In an explicit frame such as กำชับให้...ไม่..., อนุญาตให้...ไม่..., or ทำให้...ไม่..., the directive, permission, or causal relation holds while the lower outcome is negative; bare ให้ + causee + ไม่... often needs more context.
- ให้ normally leaves an agentive causee some control; ทำให้ presents a stronger cause–result connection and readily accepts inanimate causes.
- Time and aspect come from context and markers such as กำลัง and แล้ว, not from a conjugated causative verb.
