događati se / dogoditi se (to happen)

Serbian догађати се / догодити се means happen, occur. Imperfective догађати се presents an event in progress, a pattern, or repeated occurrences; perfective догодити се presents one occurrence as a bounded whole. The construction often looks impersonal because шта, нешто, or neuter то is the subject, but an explicit event noun is nominative and controls full agreement.

High-value forms and third-person dominance

Formдогађати се (imperfective)догодити се (perfective)
present, 3rd singularдогађа седогоди се
present, 3rd pluralдогађају седогоде се
l-participleдогађао/догађала/догађало се; догађали/догађале/догађала седогодио/догодила/догодило се; догодили/догодиле/догодила се
future, 3rd singularдогађаће седогодиће се
imperativemorphologically possible but not ordinarily used in the “happen” meaning; use нека се...

The fused perfective future is догодиће се because the infinitive ends in -ти. The table explicitly rejects the split form догодити ће се in the standard Ekavian spelling used here.

All personal forms can be generated morphologically—догађам се, догађаш се; догодим се, догодиш се—but ordinary “happen” clauses overwhelmingly use third person because events, changes, and facts happen. First and second person require personification or a special metalinguistic context, so they are not high-value learner forms.

Шта се догађа испред зграде? Чујем много људи.

What's happening in front of the building? I can hear a lot of people.

Не знамо тачно шта се догодило после састанка.

We don't know exactly what happened after the meeting.

Process and recurrence versus one occurrence

Use догађати се for an event unfolding now, a recurring pattern, or repeated occurrences. Use догодити се when one event is counted or viewed as complete.

Промене се догађају брже него што тим стиже да их објасни корисницима.

Changes are happening faster than the team can explain them to users.

Сличне грешке су се раније догађале после сваког ажурирања.

Similar errors used to occur after every update.

Јутрос се догодила једна озбиљна грешка, али смо је већ исправили.

One serious error occurred this morning, but we've already fixed it.

Both members are real aspect partners: the event type and required се remain stable while viewpoint changes. A perfective present such as догоди commonly appears in a future-oriented condition.

Ако се иста грешка поново догоди, одмах сачувај снимак екрана.

If the same error happens again, save a screenshot immediately.

For an event unfolding now, use imperfective Шта се догађа? Perfective past Шта се догодило? asks about a completed occurrence. Avoid using isolated Шта се догоди? to teach this contrast, because surface догоди can also be the third-person singular aorist “happened.”

The aspect overview develops this process–boundary contrast across other verb pairs.

Not truly impersonal: the event controls agreement

With an explicit noun, that event is the nominative subject. Gender and number determine the verb and past l-participle.

SubjectPresent/repeatedPerfective past
промена (feminine singular)промена се догађапромена се догодила
промене (feminine plural)промене се догађајупромене су се догодиле
нешто (neuter singular)нешто се догађанешто се догодило

Током ноћи су се догодиле две мање незгоде на истој раскрсници.

Two minor accidents happened at the same intersection during the night.

Нешто необично се догађа са екраном кад отворим ту апликацију.

Something unusual happens to the screen when I open that app.

The frequent neuter шта/нешто/то се догодило makes the verb look impersonal. But plural две незгоде су се догодиле proves that normal subject agreement is active. This lexical се is not the agent-backgrounding се described on the se-passive and impersonal page.

💡
Find the event noun before deciding agreement. A person affected by the event may be dative, but the nominative event remains the subject.

What happened to someone: affected dative

A dative phrase identifies the person who experiences or is affected by the event.

Јуче ми се догодило нешто чудно у повратку с посла.

Something strange happened to me yesterday on my way home from work.

Догодиле су му се три добре ствари у истој недељи.

Three good things happened to him in the same week.

In the second sentence, plural feminine три добре ствари controls догодиле су. Dative му does not control agreement. The clitic sequence is су му се: auxiliary, dative, lexical се.

The question is Шта ти се догодило? “What happened to you?” Dative ти comes before се.

Шта вам се догодило на путу до аеродрома?

What happened to you on the way to the airport? (plural or polite)

Place, time, and circumstance

The event can be located with ordinary adverbials: у + locative, на + locative, a time expression, or a subordinate clause.

Инцидент се догодио на перону неколико минута пре поласка воза.

The incident happened on the platform a few minutes before the train departed.

То се често догађа кад више програма истовремено користи камеру.

That often happens when several programs use the camera at the same time.

No Serbian equivalent of English dummy it is required when the event itself is expressed: Догодила се незгода, not a separate “it happened an accident” structure.

Required се and perfect-tense auxiliary behavior

In the occurrence meaning, се is part of the lexical construction. Dropping it does not produce the normal verb happen.

Affirmative third-person singular perfect omits је beside се:

Промена се догодила без претходног обавештења.

The change happened without prior notice.

Not Промена се је догодила. Plural auxiliary remains: Промене су се догодиле. Negative није remains too: Промена се није догодила.

Why ordinary imperatives are rare

A speaker normally cannot command an event simply to happen, so forms such as догађај се or догоди се are not productive everyday imperatives in this lexical meaning. Serbian instead uses нека + present for wishes, acceptance, or dramatic permission.

Нека се догоди шта мора; ми смо урадили све што смо могли.

Let whatever must happen, happen; we've done everything we could.

This construction is somewhat (elevated/dramatic). In practical speech, speakers usually state a condition: Ако се то догоди....

Near-synonyms and register

Дешавати се / десити се is a very common contemporary synonym pair with the same core aspect distinction. Збивати се / збити се is more (formal/literary) and frequent in narrative or historical prose.

Не разумем зашто се то стално дешава само на мом рачунару.

I don't understand why that keeps happening only on my computer.

Догађај се збио у време великих друштвених промена.

The event took place during a period of major social change. (formal/literary)

These are lexical alternatives, not forms made by removing се from догађати се.

Micro-dialogue

„Шта се догодило с пројектором?“ — „Екран је одједном поцрнео.“ — „Да ли се то раније догађало?“ — „Јесте, али само кад је кабл лабав.“

‘What happened to the projector?’ — ‘The screen suddenly went black.’ — ‘Has that happened before?’ — ‘Yes, but only when the cable is loose.’

Perfective asks about this occurrence; imperfective asks about a recurring history.

Practice Tasks

Task 1: Let the event control agreement

Translate One change happened and Three changes happened. Use feminine singular догодила се and feminine plural догодиле су се, then add dative ми without changing agreement.

Task 2: Process, pattern, or bounded event?

Write three sentences: ask what is happening now, describe an error that occurs every Friday, and report one error that happened yesterday. Choose догађати се twice and догодити се once.

Common Mistakes

❌ Ове промене се у овом тренутку догоде пред нашим очима.

Incorrect for changes unfolding at this moment — plural догоде is perfective present; use imperfective догађају се.

✅ Ове промене се у овом тренутку догађају пред нашим очима.

These changes are happening before our eyes right now.

❌ Јуче догодила озбиљна незгода.

Incorrect — the occurrence verb requires lexical се.

✅ Јуче се догодила озбиљна незгода.

A serious accident happened yesterday.

❌ Догодило се велика промена у распореду.

Incorrect agreement — feminine singular промена requires догодила.

✅ Догодила се велика промена у распореду.

A major change in the schedule occurred.

❌ Промена се је догодила током ноћи.

Incorrect — affirmative third-person singular је is omitted beside се.

✅ Промена се догодила током ноћи.

The change happened during the night.

❌ Догодиле су ми се нешто необично.

Incorrect agreement — neuter singular нешто requires догодило; dative ми does not control agreement.

✅ Догодило ми се нешто необично.

Something unusual happened to me.

Key Takeaways

  • Догађати се presents an unfolding or repeated occurrence; догодити се presents one bounded event.
  • The verbs are third-person-dominant in ordinary use, but their nominative event subjects control gender and number agreement.
  • Affected people are dative: нешто ми се догодило, ствари су му се догодиле.
  • Lexical се is required, and affirmative third-person singular perfect omits је beside it.
  • Ordinary imperatives are pragmatically unavailable; use нека се догоди or a conditional construction when needed.
