Annotated Pre-Reform Newspaper Passage

Early Serbian newspapers require more than swapping old letters for new ones. Their syntax, terminology, punctuation, and conventions of attribution belong to a developing journalistic register. The excerpt below comes from Новине србске, issue dated 19 May 1834, printed in Kragujevac by the Knjažesko-srpska printing house. The National Library of Serbia scan is marked Public Domain; this page transcribes the opening report from Constantinople, collapsing printed line breaks but preserving spelling and punctuation as closely as the scan permits.

Diplomatic Reading Text

ЦАРИГРАДЪ 25га Априлія.

CONSTANTINOPLE, 25 April.

Дали смо на знань, да ће скорымъ временомъ Султана Салиха, старія кћи Нѣговогъ Величества, у бракъ ступити съ еднымъ одъ првы чиновника Высоке Порте;

We reported that Saliha Sultan, the elder daughter of His Majesty, would soon marry one of the foremost officials of the Sublime Porte;

зато е заповѣсть издана, да се домъ онай, у комъ ће обытавати, сходно высокомъ достоинству нѣномъ устрои,

therefore an order was issued that the house in which she would reside be arranged in keeping with her high rank,

и на тай е конацъ Халилъ-Вели-Ага, еданъ одъ членова министеріума, Дѣйствителный Већилдаръ царскій, наименованъ верховнымъ Надзирателѣмъ двора Принцезиногъ.

and for that purpose Halil Veli Aga, a member of the ministry and an imperial official, was appointed chief overseer of the princess's household.

Лице, коме е честь та опредѣлена была, да буде зеть Султановъ, іоштъ ніе назначено было.

The person destined for the honor of becoming the sultan's son-in-law had not yet been named.

The titles in the English are functional, not a claim that every Ottoman office has a simple one-word English equivalent. Већилдар is therefore paraphrased cautiously. A historical dictionary and Ottoman administrative history would be needed for a narrower institutional translation.

A Modern Editorial Rendering

Цариград, 25. априла. Јавили смо да ће се Салиха-султанија, старија кћи Његовог величанства, ускоро удати за једног од највиших чиновника Високе порте.

Constantinople, 25 April. We reported that Saliha Sultan, His Majesty's elder daughter, would soon marry one of the highest officials of the Sublime Porte.

Зато је наређено да се кућа у којој ће живети уреди у складу с њеним високим положајем.

It was therefore ordered that the house in which she would live be arranged in keeping with her high position.

Особа којој је била намењена част да постане султанов зет још није била одређена.

The person intended for the honor of becoming the sultan's son-in-law had not yet been selected.

This is a reading aid. It modernizes spelling, divides the first long period, replaces obsolete or calqued vocabulary, and makes reflexive marriage syntax idiomatic. It does not silently overwrite the historical source.

💡
Transliteration changes script; normalization changes spelling; paraphrase can change vocabulary and syntax. Name the operation you are performing, because these three editorial acts answer different questions.

Reading the Orthography

The text predates the general triumph of Vuk Karadžić's reformed spelling. It uses final hard signs (градъ, домъ, конацъ), yat (заповѣсть, нѣномъ), older adjectival endings (скорымъ, высокомъ), and the letter і. Forms such as Высоке and была reveal the learned Slaveno-Serbian/Russian Church Slavonic layer rather than a simple phonemic record of ordinary Serbian speech.

Do not pronounce every historical graph as though reading modern Russian. The page is evidence for a Serbian written register in 1834. A modern Serbian reading generally strips final ъ, resolves ѣ according to the lexical history, and replaces morphology where the older written norm differs: високе, била, њеном.

The numeral date 25га Априлія corresponds to modern 25. априла. Contemporary Serbian writes month names lowercase and uses an ordinal period after the numeral in running dates.

For the larger sequence of scripts and reforms, see pre-Vuk orthographies.

Long Syntax and Information Packaging

The first report is a long period linked by a semicolon and several embedded clauses. Its backbone is:

  1. Дали смо на знање — reporting frame;
  2. да ће ... ступити у брак — reported proposition;
  3. зато је заповест издана — consequence;
  4. да се дом ... устроји — content of the order;
  5. у ком ће обитавати — relative clause modifying дом;
  6. Халил-Вели-Ага ... наименован — appointment for that purpose.

Modern news style generally divides this load. It also front-loads the event and uses shorter attribution. The older sentence, however, is not random: each new clause follows causally from the marriage announcement.

Пошто је најављено венчање, издата је наредба да се резиденција уреди, а за надзор је именован посебан званичник.

After the wedding was announced, an order was issued to arrange the residence, and a special official was appointed to oversee the work.

This modern compression clarifies structure but removes names, ranks, and evidential sequencing. Editorial brevity always has a cost.

Historical Lexicon and Government

Дати на знање survives in modern Serbian but is formal and usually means notify/make known. In this news context дали смо на знање functions like we reported/announced earlier. It must not be translated as literal physical giving.

Ступити у брак с неким remains grammatical (formal). Everyday Serbian more often uses удати се за некога for a woman or neutral венчати се с неким. The historical text has съ + instrumental, visible in съ еднымъ.

Обитавати is still possible (formal/literary), but journalistic prose would often prefer живети/становати. Устројити дом is archaic in this sense; уредити кућу/резиденцију is contemporary.

Attribution and Epistemic Caution

The report distinguishes what had been announced from what was not yet known: the future marriage is reported, but the groom још није био назначен. That is a useful journalistic discipline. A translation should preserve the uncertainty rather than supply the historically known groom from hindsight.

Име будућег младожење у тренутку овог извештаја још није било објављено.

At the time of this report, the future groom's name had not yet been announced.

This sentence comments on the textual state only. It does not claim that the newspaper or its sources were factually infallible.

Register and Punctuation

Capitalization in Высоке Порте, Надзирателѣмъ, and Принцезиногъ reflects the source's practice, not current Serbian capitalization. Modern editorial prose would use Висока порта as a proper institutional name but lowercase ordinary titles such as надзорник and принцезин when not beginning a sentence.

The source uses a semicolon to hold together a large causal period. Modern punctuation could retain it, but sentence division is more readable. Never "correct" the original punctuation inside a diplomatic quotation without square brackets or an editorial note.

Common Mistakes

Mechanical letter substitution

❌ „была“ само пребацујем у „била“ и тврдим да сам направио дипломатски препис.

Incorrect—the change is normalization, not diplomatic transcription.

✅ У нормализованом читању облик „была“ преносим као „била“.

In a normalized reading, I render была as била.

Reading дали as modern whether

❌ „Дали смо на знање“ овде значи „whether we knew“.

Incorrect—the historical phrase means 'we made known/reported,' not the interrogative conjunction да ли.

✅ „Дали смо на знање“ овде уводи раније саопштену вест.

Here, дали смо на знање introduces news reported earlier.

Inventing certainty

❌ Новине су већ именовале младожењу у овом пасусу.

Incorrect—the passage explicitly says that the person had not yet been named.

✅ Пасус оставља идентитет младожење неодређеним.

The paragraph leaves the groom's identity unspecified.

Copying old capitalization into modern prose

❌ За Надзор је именован Главни Чиновник.

Incorrect contemporary capitalization—ordinary titles and common nouns are not capitalized this way.

✅ За надзор је именован главни чиновник.

A chief official was appointed to supervise the work.

Key Takeaways

  • The 1834 source uses pre-reform spelling and learned morphology; modernization is more than swapping individual letters.
  • Unpack the long period into reporting, reported event, consequence, ordered action, and appointment.
  • Preserve the report's uncertainty: the groom had not yet been named in this passage.
  • Label diplomatic transcription, normalization, and modern journalistic rewriting as different editorial products.

Reuse Exercises

  1. Annotate every subordinate clause in the diplomatic text and draw the causal chain from announcement to appointment.
  2. Prepare three versions of the first sentence: diplomatic transcription, spelling normalization, and a two-sentence modern news rewrite. Label every layer.
  3. Build a glossary for дати на знање, ступити у брак, обитавати, устројити, наименовати. Mark each as current formal, literary, archaic, or replaced in neutral journalism.

For modern comparison, read the guide to journalistic register and notice how sentence length and attribution have changed while evidential caution remains essential.
