A dialect transcript is evidence of one recorded event, not a script for how an entire region invariably speaks. The excerpt below comes from Jana Marković and Branislav Veselinović's „Данашњи говор Тршића“ in the open educational volume Млади и србистика 2, recorded in Tršić in August 2019 and published with an accented appendix. The article states that the informants knew about and consented to recording and publication. This page uses a short, complete opening excerpt from informant И2; it does not identify her beyond the scholarly source's anonymized label.
Transcription Key and Source Limits
Unlike ordinary Serbian spelling, the source marks prosody. It uses the traditional four-accent system: а̏ short falling, а̑ long falling, а̀ short rising, а́ long rising; a macron, а̄, marks an unaccented long vowel, most often a post-accentual length in this notation. The three dots record a pause or trailing continuation. These marks belong to linguistic transcription and must not be added to normal writing.
The transcription is narrower than a standard spelling transcript but is not the International Phonetic Alphabet. It records the authors' analysis of the audio. A page image, a searchable PDF extraction, and a later unaccented retyping are not interchangeable: only the accented scholarly edition licenses claims about pitch and length.
Complete Short Excerpt
Шта̏ је се све̏ прежи́вело... и ра̀тови...
The things one has lived through... wars too...
Тријес чѐтвр̄то го̏диште ја̄ сам.
I was born in '34.
Ве̏лике го̏дине.
That's a lot of years.
Ја̄ сам из даљѝне, уф, шта̏ да вам при́чāм, о̀ва̄ дру̀га̄ ку̏ћа о́вде.
I'm from farther away—oh, what can I tell you—the other house over here.
Ма̄јка ми је из су̏седно̄г сѐла, Корѐните̄...
My mother was from the neighboring village of Korenita...
The English preserves hesitation but not every false start. A word-for-word version of шта да вам причам as what should I tell you misses its discourse function: the speaker is searching for a starting point. Likewise, из даљине here means from a place farther away, not abstractly from the distance.
A Standard-Serbian Reading Aid
Normalization answers the question "How could this information be phrased in edited contemporary standard Serbian?" It does not claim that the speaker made errors.
Свашта смо преживели, па и ратове.
We've lived through all sorts of things, including wars.
Рођена сам 1934. године. Много је то година.
I was born in 1934. That's a great many years.
Ја сам из места мало даље одавде; шта да вам кажем, од оне друге куће.
I'm from a place a little farther from here; what can I say, from that other house.
Мајка ми је из суседног села, Корените.
My mother is from the neighboring village of Korenita.
The normalized version removes accent notation, repairs the clause frame, and makes deictic relations more explicit. It also changes the texture of the testimony. The pauses, repetition, and уф are evidence of spontaneous narration, not disposable noise.
The Clitic Cluster је се
The opening шта је се све преживело contains је се, where edited contemporary Serbian normally suppresses је next to reflexive се in this construction: шта се све преживело. The transcript therefore preserves a regional pattern that standard normalization would not retain.
English has no directly comparable clitic repair. An English learner may be tempted either to delete every auxiliary in Serbian or to keep је mechanically. The right analysis is register-specific: cite је се as recorded dialect data, but use се without је in neutral edited standard Serbian here.
У транскрипту стоји „шта је се све преживело“, а у стандардној редакцији „шта се све преживело“.
The transcript has 'the things one has lived through,' while standard editing has the construction without је.
This is a genuine grammatical comparison, not evidence that the speaker's dialect lacks a system. Dialects have rules of their own; normalization maps between systems for a particular publishing purpose.
Morphology and Local Forms
The excerpt itself has тријес, and elsewhere in the same transcript the speaker uses forms such as четрес, погино, дошо, and овдена. Much of the excerpt's regional material is nevertheless prosodic rather than segmental. The authors classify present-day Tršić speech within the Herzegovina–Krajina dialect while documenting strong Ekavian influence from surrounding speech. That contact history is why one person's speech cannot be reduced to a pure "Ekavian" or "Ijekavian" label.
The genitive phrase из суседног села is standard in form. Корените is the place name governed as an appositive identifying the village; an editor should verify local case usage rather than force a guessed paradigm. The full-form demonstratives ова друга кућа овде combine proximal ова and locative овде, an ordinary spoken strategy when pointing in a shared physical setting.
What the Accent Marks Tell Us
The accentual notation records all four standard accent types and unaccented vowel length. In ма̄јка, the macron records length without assigning one of the four pitch-accent signs; it is not an ordinary spelling diacritic. In при́чāм, the acute identifies a long-rising accent and the following macron a post-accentual length. The article reports that the Tršić speakers broadly preserve the Neo-Štokavian four-accent system and many post-accentual lengths, even while other features show contact-induced change.
Do not confuse that finding with uniformity. A single speaker can vary; age, topic, tempo, audience, and individual history matter. Learn the larger system through dialect accentology, then return to the transcript as situated evidence.
Discourse and Oral Syntax
The sequence has no polished written topic sentence. Instead, уф and шта да вам причам manage planning time while keeping contact with the interviewer. Ова друга кућа овде relies on shared visual context. If the audio is separated from the interview setting, the phrase becomes underdetermined; a responsible annotation admits that.
The speaker's fragments are pragmatically complete turns. Велике године is structurally a noun phrase, yet in context it evaluates a long life span. English similarly allows a long time, but an idiomatic translation may need a full clause.
Уф, шта да вам кажем... много се тога променило.
Oh, what can I tell you... a lot has changed.
This contemporary standard example reproduces the discourse function, not the regional accent profile.
Register and Ethics
Published dialect evidence must not become comedy spelling. Forms are (regional: Tršić), and the accent marks are (academic). They are not defective standard Serbian. Nor should a learner imitate an elderly informant to manufacture local authenticity. Cite the recording, state the editorial layer, and compare structures without ranking the speaker.
The consent statement covers the published research material. It does not authorize invented biographical details, voice cloning, or an imitation presented as the informant. The teaching translation therefore stays with information in the excerpt.
Common Mistakes
Treating accent notation as ordinary spelling
❌ У поруци ћу написати: „Ма̄јка ми је из су̏седно̄г сѐла.“
Incorrect register—the accent and length marks belong to specialist transcription, not an ordinary message.
✅ У поруци ћу написати: „Мајка ми је из суседног села.“
In a normal message I will write: 'My mother is from the neighboring village.'
Correcting the evidence inside quotation marks
❌ Транскрипт гласи: „Свашта се преживело.“
Incorrect citation—the wording has been normalized but is still being labeled as the transcript.
✅ Стандардни еквивалент гласи: „Свашта се преживело.“
The standard equivalent is: 'People have lived through all sorts of things.'
Generalizing from one speaker
❌ Сви људи из Тршића увек кажу „је се“.
Incorrect—one attested token does not justify an absolute claim about every speaker and context.
✅ У овом исказу информаторке И2 забележено је „је се“.
In this utterance by informant I2, је се is recorded.
Translating a discourse marker literally
❌ „Шта да вам причам“ увек значи да говорница тражи списак тема.
Incorrect—the phrase here manages hesitation and launches a narrative.
✅ Овде „шта да вам причам“ приближно значи „одакле да почнем“.
Here, шта да вам причам means roughly 'where should I begin?'
Key Takeaways
- Treat accent marks, pauses, and word forms as claims made by the cited transcript about a particular recording.
- Keep the attested dialectal је се in quotation, but use the standard се construction in a labeled normalization.
- A transcript of one speaker supports analysis of that token, not absolute claims about every person in a region.
- Preserve oral planning devices such as уф and шта да вам причам when they matter to the interaction.
Reuse Exercises
- Produce two versions of the excerpt: an exact accented quotation and an unaccented standard reading aid. List every change, including clitic order and punctuation.
- Explain what уф, pauses, and demonstratives contribute to the interview as interaction. Do not label them meaningless fillers.
- Choose one accent-marked word and identify its accent type and any following length. Then explain why that mark must disappear in ordinary spelling.
For the history of mapping spoken evidence onto edited text, continue with editorial normalization.
