Dialogue: Reporting a Problem to a Landlord

Reporting a housing problem requires more than the vocabulary for a broken appliance. You need to distinguish the fault from its visible result, say what you have already done, request action with the right urgency, and arrange access to the flat. Serbian aspect helps separate inspection, repair as a process, and a completed fix.

The tenant and landlord below use formal ви, a common neutral choice when their relationship is practical rather than personal. A long-standing friendly relationship might move to ти, but the grammar must stay consistent once the register is chosen.

The repair verbs here apply the broader workflow in choosing aspect.

Complete Dialogue

Станарка: Добар дан, господине Петровићу. Зовем због бојлера: од јутрос нема топле воде, а вода цури испод уређаја.

Tenant: Good afternoon, Mr. Petrović. I'm calling about the water heater: there has been no hot water since this morning, and water is leaking from under the unit.

Станодавац: Да ли сте затворили вентил?

Landlord: Have you shut off the valve?

Станарка: Јесам. Вентил је затворен, али под је већ мокар.

Tenant: I have. The valve is shut, but the floor is already wet.

Станодавац: У реду. Позваћу мајстора да погледа бојлер.

Landlord: All right. I'll call a repair technician to look at the water heater.

Станарка: Молим вас да то буде што пре, јер тренутно не могу да користим купатило.

Tenant: Please make that as soon as possible, because I currently can't use the bathroom.

Станодавац: Разумем. Мајстор може да дође између четири и пет. Хоћете ли бити код куће?

Landlord: I understand. The technician can come between four and five. Will you be at home?

Станарка: Нећу стићи пре пола пет, али комшиница може да га пусти у стан.

Tenant: I won't arrive before four thirty, but my neighbor can let him into the flat.

Станодавац: Пошаљите ми њен број, па ћу се с њом договорити око уласка.

Landlord: Send me her number, and I'll arrange access with her.

Станарка: Важи. Да ли ће мајстор само прегледати бојлер или ће га и поправити данас?

Tenant: All right. Will the technician only inspect the water heater, or will he also repair it today?

Станодавац: Ако буде имао потребан део, поправиће га одмах; ако не, привремено ће зауставити цурење.

Landlord: If he has the necessary part, he'll repair it immediately; if not, he'll stop the leak temporarily.

Станарка: Хвала. Молим вас, јавите ми чим будете знали тачно време доласка.

Tenant: Thank you. Please let me know as soon as you know the exact arrival time.

Line-by-Line Grammar

1. Name the topic with због + genitive

Зовем због бојлера literally gives the cause or reason for the call. Због governs genitive, hence бојлера. The colon then opens a concise fault report.

Од јутрос нема топле воде uses existential нема + genitive: топле воде, not nominative. Present цури plus од јутрос presents a leak that began this morning and is still continuing.

2. Ask about a completed safety step

Perfective затворили asks whether the valve has been shut—a bounded action whose result matters now. Formal сте затворили uses plural agreement for one tenant.

The answer Јесам recovers the whole verb phrase ‘I have shut it.’ Serbian echo forms often replace a bare yes when confirming a verb.

3. Resulting states are adjectives or passive participles

Вентил је затворен describes the current result of closing. Под је мокар describes another state. Neither sentence identifies an agent because the practical state, not the actor, is the point.

Compare затворила сам вентил ‘I closed the valve,’ an event with an explicit actor, and вентил је затворен, the state relevant to diagnosis.

💡
When reporting a fault, separate event from state: Бојлер се покварио tells what happened; бојлер је покварен tells what condition it is in now.

4. Inspection before repair

Позваћу is perfective future: the landlord commits to one call. Да погледа бојлер gives the technician's purpose. Perfective погледа here means inspect/check once, not merely direct his eyes at it.

Later, прегледати бојлер is a technical inspection of the unit, while поправити га promises a completed repair. Imperfective поправљати would focus on the repair process or repeated work, not guarantee a finished result.

5. Urgency without an accusation

Молим вас да то буде што пре is firm but cooperative (formal). Што пре means ‘as soon as possible.’ The explanation with јер establishes genuine urgency: the bathroom is unusable.

The modal pattern не могу да користим uses да + present. The infinitive не могу користити is also grammatical; neither construction should be condemned universally.

6. Scheduling with a time window

Између четири и пет uses genitive after између. Хоћете ли бити код куће? is future-oriented and formal. Here хоћете ли asks about availability, not willingness to perform a favor.

Пре пола пет means before 4:30: Serbian counts halfway toward five. The perfective стићи concerns reaching home by that boundary.

7. Clitics inside a да clause

Комшиница може да га пусти у стан places accusative clitic га immediately after да. It refers to the male technician. Moving га after the infinitive-like verb, as English might encourage, breaks natural Serbian clitic placement.

Perfective пусти presents one act of letting him enter. У стан is accusative destination; once inside, he would be у стану.

8. Coordinating access

The formal imperative пошаљите asks for the number. Dative ми is the recipient; possessive њен refers to the female neighbor. Па ћу се с њом договорити presents the arrangement as the next consequence.

Договорити се с неким око нечега is common conversational government: with someone about the practical details of something.

9. The aspectual question that matters

The tenant contrasts прегледати and поправити. Both are perfective here, but they have different lexical endpoints: completing an inspection is not completing a repair. Aspect alone does not make two verbs synonymous.

Object clitic га refers to masculine бојлер, not to the technician. Context and agreement help resolve the pronoun.

10. Future II in the condition

Ако буде имао потребан део uses future II (буде + l-participle) in a future condition. The main result uses future I поправиће. This is not an all-purpose replacement for present after ако; it makes the future contingency explicit.

In the alternative, omitted material is recovered: ако не [буде имао део]. Serbian avoids repeating what the contrast makes obvious.

11. Чим будете знали sets the notification point

Чим means ‘as soon as.’ Formal plural будете знали refers to the landlord and places the knowing before the requested notification. Јавите ми is a formal imperative with dative recipient ми.

The request concerns тачно време доласка, a genitive relationship: the exact time of arrival.

Discourse and Register

The tenant gives observable facts before demanding a solution: no hot water, active leak, valve closed, wet floor. This sequencing makes the urgency credible. She requests prompt action but does not diagnose the technical cause herself.

The landlord confirms an immediate step, offers a time window, and explains what depends on the spare part. A promise such as Све ћу решити одмах would sound reassuring but could be false; the conditional plan is more useful and professionally responsible.

Reuse Exercises

Task 1: Report a different fault

State an ongoing problem, one completed safety action, and the resulting state.

Радијатор цури од синоћ. Затворила сам вентил, али је тепих већ мокар.

The radiator has been leaking since last night. I shut the valve, but the carpet is already wet.

Task 2: Arrange access indirectly

Explain that you are unavailable and authorize another person to admit the technician.

Нећу бити код куће пре шест, али брат може да пусти мајстора у стан и покаже му где је квар.

I won't be home before six, but my brother can let the technician into the flat and show him where the fault is.

Common Mistakes

Using nominative after због

❌ Зовем због бојлер који не ради.

Incorrect — због governs genitive: због бојлера.

✅ Зовем због бојлера који од јутрос не ради.

I'm calling about the water heater, which hasn't worked since this morning.

Omitting the reflexive marker from an intransitive fault

❌ Бојлер је покварио током ноћи.

Incorrect — without an external object, say бојлер се покварио; је покварио means ‘damaged something.’

✅ Бојлер се покварио током ноћи и сада је искључен.

The water heater broke during the night and is now switched off.

Misplacing a clitic in a да clause

❌ Комшија може да пусти га у стан.

Incorrect — the clitic га belongs immediately after да.

✅ Комшија може да га пусти у стан после пет.

The neighbor can let him into the flat after five.

Promising a result with the wrong verb form

❌ Мајстор ће га поправља данас.

Incorrect — future I needs an infinitive or fused future form; completed repair is поправиће га.

✅ Мајстор ће данас прегледати уређај и, ако може, поправиће га.

The technician will inspect the unit today and, if possible, repair it.

Key Takeaways

  • Report the fault, your safety action, and the current result as separate facts.
  • Use perfective verbs for bounded steps and a promised completed repair; use imperfective forms for ongoing leakage or repair activity.
  • Formal modal requests can be urgent without being accusatory.
  • Keep object clitics early in да clauses: да га пусти, да ми јавите.
  • Scheduling access requires clear time windows, who will admit the technician, and what will happen if a part is unavailable.
