At a medical appointment, Serbian organizes symptoms around the body part and the experiencer: боли ме грло has nominative грло and accusative ме, while врти ми се and мучно ми је use a dative experiencer. This original dialogue shows how a patient describes onset and duration and how a doctor asks questions, gives examination instructions, and maintains formal address.
Text status: This is an original language-learning dialogue, not medical advice or a transcript of a real consultation. It models a routine non-emergency visit in contemporary standard Serbian. In an actual urgent situation, follow local emergency instructions rather than relying on a language lesson.
The complete dialogue
Лекар:
Добар дан. Изволите, седите. Шта Вас доводи?
Good afternoon. Please, have a seat. What brings you in?
Пацијенткиња:
Већ три дана ме боли грло, а од јутрос ми се повремено врти у глави.
My throat has been hurting for three days, and since this morning I've occasionally felt dizzy.
Лекар:
Имате ли температуру?
Do you have a fever?
Пацијенткиња:
Синоћ сам имала 38 са 2, а јутрос 37 са 5.
Last night my temperature was 38.2, and this morning it was 37.5.
Лекар:
Да ли кашљете и да ли Вас боли кад гутате?
Are you coughing, and does it hurt when you swallow?
Пацијенткиња:
Помало кашљем. Кад гутам, грло ме јаче боли, а ноћас скоро нисам спавала.
I'm coughing a little. My throat hurts more when I swallow, and I hardly slept last night.
Лекар:
Да ли сте узимали нешто за температуру или бол?
Have you taken anything for the fever or pain?
Пацијенткиња:
Синоћ сам попила парацетамол, али јутрос нисам ништа узела.
I took paracetamol last night, but I haven't taken anything this morning.
Лекар:
У реду. Исправите леђа и дубоко удахните. Сада отворите уста.
All right. Straighten your back and take a deep breath. Now open your mouth.
Пацијенткиња:
Треба ли да останем код куће наредних неколико дана?
Should I stay at home for the next few days?
Лекар:
Кад завршимо преглед, објаснићу Вам шта препоручујем. Ако Вам се стање нагло погорша, одмах се јавите надлежној хитној служби.
When we finish the examination, I'll explain what I recommend. If your condition suddenly gets worse, contact the appropriate emergency service immediately.
The English translation says “my throat” where Serbian says ме боли грло, literally placing the body part as subject and the person as object. It also translates имала сам 38 и два as “my temperature was 38.2”: the word температуру is recoverable from the doctor's question and is naturally omitted.
Line-by-line annotation
| Line | Grammar | Interactional role |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Polite plural imperatives изволите, седите address one patient. Accusative Вас is the object of доводи. | Шта Вас доводи? is a professional invitation to state the reason for the visit, not a question about transportation. |
| 2 | With болети, nominative грло controls singular боли; accusative ме is the experiencer. Врти ми се instead uses dative ми. | Већ три дана and од јутрос give duration and onset before any diagnosis is suggested. |
| 3 | Имати температуру takes accusative температуру. Inversion имате ли is a compact formal question. | The doctor checks a symptom without presupposing it. |
| 4 | Feminine имала agrees with the patient speaking about herself. Colloquial 38 са 2 reads the written decimal 38,2; the second clause omits сам имала after јутрос. | The patient gives two comparable readings economically. Celsius is understood in this context. |
| 5 | Polite/plural present кашљете, гутате maintains Ви. Accusative Вас is the experiencer of an unspecified pain in да ли Вас боли. | Two short questions refine the symptom history. |
| 6 | Adverbial comparative јаче modifies боли. Feminine perfect нисам спавала reports the patient's night. | The answer connects pain intensity to an action and adds functional impact. |
| 7 | In polite singular, conventional Да ли сте узимали...? uses the plural l-participle form, even though one woman is addressed. За + accusative gives purpose: за температуру. | The question asks what was taken; it does not recommend a medicine. |
| 8 | Perfective попила and узела present bounded doses/events. Negative pronoun ништа accompanies verbal negation нисам. | The contrast between last night and this morning creates a clear medication timeline. |
| 9 | Polite plural imperatives исправите, удахните, отворите give one patient sequential instructions. Accusative body parts follow the transitive imperatives. | Short imperatives are neutral professional instructions here, not rude commands. |
| 10 | Треба ли да + present asks for advice. Код куће is a fixed location phrase; genitive наредних неколико дана expresses duration. | The patient requests guidance without treating her own guess as a diagnosis. |
| 11 | Present after future-time кад and ако gives завршимо, погорша. Dative Вам marks the recipient/experiencer; јавити се takes dative служби. | The doctor postpones advice until after the examination and gives a general escalation instruction. |
Two experiencer patterns
The two most useful patterns should not be merged:
| Pattern | Experiencer | Symptom/state |
|---|---|---|
| Боли ме глава. | accusative ме | nominative body part глава |
| Боле ме леђа. | accusative ме | plural subject леђа, so боле |
| Мучно ми је. | dative ми | impersonal adverbial predicate |
| Врти ми се. | dative ми | impersonal reflexive predicate |
Од јутрос ме боли глава, а кад устанем, заврти ми се.
My head has hurt since this morning, and when I stand up, I get dizzy.
После вожње ми је било мучно, али ми је сада боље.
I felt nauseated after the journey, but I feel better now.
English makes I the subject in all four meanings. Serbian encodes the person as accusative or dative and lets the symptom construction determine agreement. The dedicated болети reference covers its full forms.
Duration and onset
Већ + duration emphasizes that a situation has continued up to now. Од + genitive names the starting point. Serbian normally uses the present for a symptom still current, where English often uses has been ...-ing.
Кашаљ траје већ недељу дана, али се од јуче појачао.
The cough has lasted for a week, but it has become worse since yesterday.
Present траје describes continuation; perfective се појачао marks a change. A clinician needs both the duration and the change, so aspect carries practical discourse value.
Advice and examination instructions
An imperative can be appropriately neutral when a professional guides an immediate action: удахните, отворите, седите. General advice often uses треба да, можете да, or a direct recommendation with first-person препоручујем да.
Препоручујем Вам да данас мирујете и пратите како се осећате.
I recommend that you rest today and monitor how you feel. (formal address; illustrative language, not individualized medical advice)
After препоручујем Вам, present мирујете, пратите matches polite Ви. Serbian also has infinitival complements, but да + present is entirely standard and especially common in speech.
Formal address and agreement
The doctor capitalizes Вас/Вам here as a courtesy to one person. The corresponding verbs and imperatives are plural: кашљете, узимали сте, отворите. The patient refers to herself with feminine singular имала сам, попила сам. Do not force those two agreement systems to match: one belongs to address, the other to self-reference.
Reuse the passage
Task 1: Change the symptoms
Replace the throat pain and dizziness with back pain and nausea. Use the correct accusative pattern with болети, the correct dative pattern with мучно, and two different duration expressions.
Task 2: Build a symptom timeline
Give one symptom that began three days ago, one change since this morning, and one bounded action last night. Use present, perfective perfect, and natural ellipsis.
Task 3: Change the examination instructions
Replace the three imperatives with устаните, окрените се, испружите руку. Then convert them to familiar singular as if a parent were guiding a child.
Common Mistakes
Making the experiencer nominative with болети
❌ Ја болим грло већ два дана.
Incorrect—the body part is the subject of болети and the experiencer is accusative.
✅ Већ два дана ме боли грло, нарочито увече.
My throat has been hurting for two days, especially in the evening.
Ignoring plural agreement with a body part
❌ Боли ме леђа после дугог седења.
Incorrect in the standard pattern—plural леђа requires боле.
✅ После дугог седења ме боле леђа и врат ми је укочен.
After sitting for a long time, my back hurts and my neck is stiff.
Using accusative in a dative state construction
❌ Мучно ме је кад путујем аутобусом.
Incorrect—мучно је takes a dative experiencer.
✅ Понекад ми је мучно кад путујем аутобусом.
I sometimes feel nauseated when I travel by bus.
Mixing familiar and polite instructions
❌ Отворите уста и удахни дубоко.
Incorrect in one formal consultation—the first imperative is polite/plural and the second is familiar singular.
✅ Отворите уста и удахните дубоко кроз нос.
Open your mouth and breathe in deeply through your nose. (polite/plural)
Key Takeaways
- Болети makes the body part nominative and the experiencer accusative: боли ме грло, боле ме леђа.
- Other symptom predicates use dative: врти ми се, мучно ми је, боље ми је.
- Current symptoms commonly use present with већ or од; bounded changes use the perfect.
- Formal Ви controls plural questions and imperatives, while the patient's self-reference keeps her singular gender agreement.
