Serbian normally expresses a means of transport with bare instrumental: аутобусом, возом, трамвајем, таксијем, бициклом, and plural-form колима. Walking is different: пешке is an adverb. Once you enter or leave a vehicle, prepositions return: ући у аутобус, изаћи из аутобуса.
This page focuses on choosing a mode, boarding, getting off, changing, and buying a ticket. Full street directions are covered under Directions and Travel.
Saying how you travel
| Mode | Means phrase | Example question/answer |
|---|---|---|
| bus | аутобусом | Идем аутобусом. |
| tram | трамвајем | Идем трамвајем. |
| trolleybus | тролејбусом | Идем тролејбусом. |
| train | возом | Путујем возом. |
| taxi | таксијем | Идем таксијем. |
| car | колима | Идем колима. |
| bicycle | бициклом | Идем бициклом. |
| on foot | пешке | Идем пешке. |
До посла обично идем трамвајем, а кад је лепо време, идем бициклом.
I usually go to work by tram, and when the weather is nice, I go by bicycle.
До станице можемо пешке, а одатле настављамо возом.
We can walk to the station and continue from there by train.
Do not add са for the vehicle. Са пријатељем means accompaniment; аутобусом means means of transport. The wider contrast appears on Instrumental Means and Accompaniment.
Ићи, возити, and возити се
Ићи + instrumental is the easiest neutral frame for “go by.” Возити without се normally means drive or operate something: возим ауто, вози аутобус. Возити се means ride/travel in or on a vehicle.
Не возим ауто, па се до факултета возим аутобусом.
I don't drive a car, so I ride the bus to university.
Ко данас вози кола, а ко се враћа таксијем?
Who is driving the car today, and who is coming back by taxi?
English drive and ride encourage errors here. If you merely name the mode, идем аутобусом avoids ambiguity.
Inside, into, and out of a vehicle
Location inside a vehicle uses у + locative: у аутобусу, у возу, у таксију, у колима. Entering uses у + accusative, while leaving uses из + genitive.
У аутобусу је гужва, па ћемо сачекати следећи.
The bus is crowded, so we'll wait for the next one.
Ушли смо у воз у последњем тренутку и изашли из њега у Новом Саду.
We got on the train at the last moment and got off it in Novi Sad.
The pronoun after из is genitive њега. In everyday speech, repeat the noun if that is clearer: изашли смо из воза.
For bicycles and motorcycles, location is commonly на бициклу / на мотору, with getting on сести на + accusative.
Стави кацигу пре него што седнеш на бицикл.
Put on a helmet before you get on the bicycle. (informal singular)
Stops, stations, and platforms
Станица can be a stop or a larger station, so specify when necessary: аутобуско стајалиште, аутобуска станица, железничка станица. A train leaves са + genitive platform; a passenger gets off на + locative stop.
Са ког перона полази воз за Ниш?
Which platform does the train to Niš leave from?
Изађите на следећој станици и пређите на аутобус број 26.
Get off at the next stop and change to bus number 26. (polite/plural)
Пресести/преседати на + accusative names the new service. In ordinary questions, где да преседнем? is extremely useful.
Где треба да преседнем за Земун и колико се чека?
Where do I need to change for Zemun, and how long is the wait?
Tickets and validation
Ticket systems differ by city and operator, so ask rather than assuming. Useful general words are карта “ticket,” једносмерна/повратна карта, аутомат, шалтер, and валидирати/поништити карту. The exact action depends on the local system.
Где могу да купим карту и да ли треба да је валидирам у возилу?
Where can I buy a ticket, and do I need to validate it on the vehicle?
Једну повратну карту до Суботице за петак, молим вас.
One return ticket to Subotica for Friday, please.
До Суботице uses genitive; за петак schedules the journey. Accusative је in да је валидирам refers to feminine карту and follows да in its clitic cluster.
Asking about route and duration
Да ли овај... иде до...? checks the service. Колико траје путовање? asks duration without translating English take literally.
Да ли овај аутобус иде до центра или морам да преседнем?
Does this bus go to the city center, or do I have to change?
Колико траје путовање и да ли воз касни?
How long does the journey take, and is the train delayed?
For arrival time, ask Када стиже...?; for departure, Када полази...?. Perfective стићи focuses on reaching the destination, while полазити names scheduled departure.
Formal and informal requests
With a driver, conductor, clerk, or stranger, use polite/plural можете, реците, извините. With a friend, use можеш, реци.
Извините, можете ли да ми кажете када треба да изађем?
Excuse me, could you tell me when I need to get off?
An abrupt Где излазим? can be understood, but the polite frame is safer with an unfamiliar person.
Situational dialogue
— Извините, да ли овај трамвај иде до железничке станице? — Не иде директно. Преседните код главног трга на аутобус број 36. — Где купујем карту? — На аутомату, а можете и телефоном. — На којој станици излазим? — На трећој после моста.
— Excuse me, does this tram go to the railway station? — Not directly. Change by the main square to bus 36. — Where do I buy a ticket? — From the machine, and you can also use your phone. — Which stop do I get off at? — The third one after the bridge.
The dialogue uses до + genitive, polite imperative преседните, на + accusative for the new line, and на + locative for the stop.

I'll get off at the stop by the hospital and continue to the hotel on foot.
