a iubi — to love

A iubi means to love — used for romantic love, family love, and strong affection for things or activities (though for "liking" things, Romanian often prefers a-i plăcea). It is the textbook model of the fourth conjugation with the -esc- infix: the majority of -i verbs insert this stressed -esc- (3pl -esc, 3sg -ește) in the singular and 3rd plural of the present. This is the type to internalize first, because it covers far more verbs than the plain dormi type.

The other thing to master with a iubi is its syntax. When you love a person, Romanian marks the direct object with the preposition pe and doubles it with a clitic pronoun: O iubesc pe Maria ("I love Maria"), literally "her I-love PE Maria." This pe + clitic-doubling is obligatory with definite human objects and has no English parallel.

Prezent indicativ

The stem is iub-; the -esc- infix appears in the 1sg, 3sg, and 3pl. Note 1sg = 3pl (iubesc), as is standard for this class.

💡
A iubi is a true -esc verb: the infix shows up in iubesc / iubești / iubește / iubesc but vanishes everywhere outside the present — iubeam, am iubit, voi iubi, aș iubi all use the bare stem iub-. The infix is a present-tense phenomenon only.
💡
When you love a specific person, you must use pe plus a doubling clitic: Îl iubesc *pe Andrei, O iubesc **pe Maria. Drop either piece and it sounds wrong to a native ear. With pronouns alone the clitic suffices: *Te iubesc needs no pe.

Common Mistakes

❌ Iubesc Maria.

Incorrect — a definite human object needs pe plus a doubling clitic.

✅ O iubesc pe Maria.

I love Maria.

Carrying the -esc- infix into other tenses is a frequent error:

❌ Eu iubeam-esc... / Pe vremuri iubescam.

Incorrect — the -esc- infix never appears in the imperfect.

✅ Pe vremuri iubeam altfel.

Back in the day I loved differently.

Don't drop the diphthong-less subjunctive ending:

❌ Vreau să iubește pe cineva.

Incorrect — the subjunctive 3rd person is iubească.

✅ Vreau să iubească pe cineva.

I want him to love someone.

For loving an activity or thing, a iubi works, but for casual "liking" use the impersonal a plăcea:

❌ Iubesc cafeaua dimineața. (sounds overwrought for mere liking)

Overstated — use a plăcea for everyday liking.

✅ Îmi place cafeaua dimineața.

I like coffee in the morning.
