English talk, speak, say, tell slide into one another so easily that learners reach for a single Polish verb — usually mówić — for all of them. But Polish keeps four jobs distinct: mówić (speak / be saying, imperfective), powiedzieć (say / tell one thing, perfective), rozmawiać (have a conversation with someone), and gadać (chat, colloquial). The trap is that "I'm talking to my friend" is a two-way conversation — rozmawiam z przyjacielem — and using mówić there quietly loses the reciprocity.
The four verbs at a glance
| Verb | Aspect | Core meaning | Typical pattern |
|---|---|---|---|
| mówić | imperfective | speak / be saying (ongoing, habitual) | mówić + że / + language / + do kogoś |
| powiedzieć | perfective | say / tell (one completed utterance) | powiedzieć komuś, że… |
| rozmawiać | imperfective | converse, talk WITH | rozmawiać z kimś (instrumental) o czymś |
| gadać | imperfective | chat, natter (casual, colloquial) | gadać z kimś |
mówić — speak / be saying (imperfective)
mówić covers ongoing or habitual speaking: the act of talking, what someone keeps saying, and which language you speak. It's the verb you use for speaking a language.
Mówię po polsku, ale jeszcze popełniam błędy.
I speak Polish, but I still make mistakes.
Co ty mówisz? Nic nie rozumiem.
What are you saying? I don't understand a thing.
Babcia zawsze mówiła, że pośpiech jest złym doradcą.
Grandma always used to say that haste is a bad advisor.
Note the structure for languages: mówić po + adverb — po polsku, po angielsku, po niemiecku — not an accusative noun. To direct speech at someone, use mówić do kogoś (mówić do mnie = to speak to me); see also mówić — speaking languages.
powiedzieć — say / tell (perfective)
powiedzieć is the perfective partner of mówić: a single, completed utterance. Use it for telling someone one thing, delivering a piece of news, or in commands like tell me. Because it's perfective, it has no present tense — its present-looking forms are future.
Powiedz mi prawdę — co się naprawdę stało?
Tell me the truth — what really happened?
Powiedziała, że przyjdzie koło ósmej.
She said she'd come around eight.
Jeszcze nikomu nie powiedziałem o awansie.
I haven't told anyone about the promotion yet.
The pair works like every Polish aspect pair: mówić for the process or repetition ("she kept saying"), powiedzieć for the single completed act ("she said it"). Mówiłem ci to sto razy (I told you a hundred times — repeated) vs Powiedziałem ci to wczoraj (I told you that yesterday — once). See powiedzieć for the full conjugation.
rozmawiać — converse WITH someone
rozmawiać is the one English hides completely. It means to have a two-way conversation, and it almost always pairs with z + instrumental ("with someone") and optionally o + locative ("about something"). It's reciprocal: both people talk.
Rozmawiam z Anią o naszych wakacjach.
I'm talking with Ania about our holidays.
Wczoraj długo rozmawialiśmy o przyszłości.
Yesterday we talked for a long time about the future.
Czy mogę przez chwilę porozmawiać z panią dyrektor?
Could I have a word with the director (f.) for a moment?
So "I'm talking to my friend" is rozmawiam z przyjacielem — a conversation — not mówię z przyjacielem, which is not idiomatic. The preposition is z + instrumental (z Anią, z przyjacielem, ze mną); see z + instrumental for accompaniment. The perfective is porozmawiać (have a quick chat / a talk), as in the third example.
gadać — chat (colloquial)
gadać means to chat, natter, or yak — informal and very common in speech, but out of place in formal writing. It can carry a faint edge of "talking idly" or "going on." (informal)
Gadaliśmy do drugiej w nocy, jak za starych czasów.
We chatted till two in the morning, just like old times.
Nie gadaj głupot, wszystko będzie dobrze.
Don't talk nonsense — everything will be fine.
In neutral or formal contexts swap gadać for rozmawiać or mówić. The perfective for "have a chat" is pogadać (informal).
A sorting test
- Which language do you speak? / What is someone (habitually) saying? → mówić.
- Telling/saying one thing, completed? → powiedzieć (Powiedz mi…).
- A two-way conversation, "talk with someone"? → rozmawiać z + instrumental.
- Casual chatting among friends? → gadać (informal).
Common Mistakes
❌ Mówię z przyjacielem o pracy.
Incorrect for a conversation — this isn't idiomatic; a two-way talk needs rozmawiać.
✅ Rozmawiam z przyjacielem o pracy.
I'm talking with my friend about work.
❌ Mów mi, co się stało.
Odd — for a single request 'tell me', Polish prefers the perfective.
✅ Powiedz mi, co się stało.
Tell me what happened.
❌ Mówię polski.
Incorrect — languages take 'po + adverb', not an accusative noun.
✅ Mówię po polsku.
I speak Polish.
❌ Rozmawiam Anię.
Incorrect — rozmawiać requires 'z' + the instrumental.
✅ Rozmawiam z Anią.
I'm talking with Ania.
❌ Chciałbym pogadać z panem prezesem o budżecie.
Too casual for a formal request — gadać/pogadać is colloquial.
✅ Chciałbym porozmawiać z panem prezesem o budżecie.
I'd like to talk with you (the chairman) about the budget.
Key Takeaways
- mówić (impf.) = speak / be saying / speak a language; powiedzieć (pf.) = say or tell one completed thing; they form one aspect pair.
- rozmawiać = have a conversation with someone — almost always z + instrumental (rozmawiam z Anią); this reciprocal verb is what English "talk to/with" usually means.
- gadać / pogadać = chat, but (informal) — replace it with rozmawiać in neutral or formal speech.
- Speak a language with po + adverb (po polsku), not an accusative noun, and address someone with mówić do kogoś, but converse with them using rozmawiać z kimś.
