The terima family begins with transfer: somebody receives an object, message, payment, or experience. From that core, Malaysian Malay extends menerima to institutional acceptance and acknowledgment, diterima to passive receipt or approval, and the fixed expression terima kasih to gratitude. Penerima names a recipient, while penerimaan names receipt, acceptance, admission, or public reception.
The matching transfer from the giver's perspective is covered in the beri family guide.
This page explains how the members of this particular family are used. The general mechanics of meN- and peN-...-an belong to Word Formation; see meN- formation and peN-...-an meanings.
No person or tense conjugation
| Frame | Present/general | Past context | Future context |
|---|---|---|---|
| everyday/root frame | Saya terima kiriman itu. | Semalam saya terima kiriman itu. | Esok saya akan terima kiriman itu. |
| careful actor voice | Saya menerima kiriman itu. | Saya telah menerima kiriman itu. | Saya akan menerima kiriman itu. |
| passive | Kiriman itu diterima. | Kiriman itu sudah diterima. | Kiriman itu akan diterima. |
Nothing in the verb identifies I, she, or they, and there is no past-tense ending. Telah, sudah, and akan are separate words. Bare terima is not an infinitive: it is licensed in commands, object voice, and conversational actor-first clauses.
Terima: root form and everyday receipt
Bare terima is standard in commands and after a first- or second-person actor in object voice. Actor-first saya terima is also extremely common (informal), especially in speech and messaging.
Terima bungkusan ini dan tandatangani borang penerimaan.
Receive this parcel and sign the acknowledgment form.
Borang itu saya terima melalui e-mel pagi tadi.
I received that form by email this morning.
Saya dah terima mesej awak, cuma belum sempat balas.
I've received your message; I just haven't had time to reply. (informal)
In careful official prose, actor-first menerima is normally preferable. The root remains fully grammatical in its standard voice frames, so the difference is not simply “short form versus correct form.”
Menerima: receive, accept, and acknowledge
Menerima takes the transferred or accepted item directly, without an English-style preposition. That object may be concrete, informational, financial, emotional, or institutional.
Aisyah menerima hadiah buatan tangan daripada rakan sekelasnya.
Aisyah received a handmade gift from her classmate.
Pihak sekolah menerima lebih daripada tiga ratus permohonan minggu lalu.
The school received more than three hundred applications last week. (formal)
Kami menerima berita itu dengan perasaan bercampur-baur.
We received the news with mixed feelings.
With proposals, invitations, explanations, responsibility, and facts, menerima often means “accept.” Context distinguishes physical receipt from willingness to approve or acknowledge.
Jawatankuasa menerima cadangan tersebut selepas beberapa pindaan dibuat.
The committee accepted the proposal after several amendments were made. (formal)
Dia akhirnya menerima hakikat bahawa rancangan asal tidak lagi dapat dilaksanakan.
She finally accepted the fact that the original plan could no longer be carried out.
Pengurus itu menerima tanggungjawab atas kesilapan pasukannya.
The manager accepted responsibility for his team's mistake.
English often uses separate verbs receive, accept, and acknowledge. Malay keeps them together when the shared idea is allowing something to pass into one's possession, institution, or understanding. This extension is conventional, not a new affix meaning.
Diterima: receipt or acceptance foregrounded
Diterima is the passive form. It lets a message, application, payment, suggestion, or person become the subject. The actor may be omitted when obvious or added with oleh.
Pembayaran anda telah diterima dan resit akan dihantar secara automatik.
Your payment has been received and a receipt will be sent automatically. (formal)
Cadangan itu diterima sebulat suara oleh semua ahli jawatankuasa.
The proposal was accepted unanimously by all committee members. (formal)
Pelajar baharu itu diterima dengan baik oleh rakan-rakan sekelasnya.
The new student was warmly accepted by her classmates.
In diterima dengan baik, the meaning may be social acceptance or a positive reception rather than simple delivery. Passive di- is attached. Compare Surat itu diterima di pejabat: diterima is one passive verb, while locative di pejabat is two words.
Terima kasih: a fixed gratitude expression
Terima kasih is the neutral Malaysian expression “thank you.” Its two words form a conventional social formula and should be learned as a unit rather than translated word by word. It can stand alone or be expanded with atas to name the reason for thanks.
Terima kasih kerana menunggu saya di luar klinik.
Thank you for waiting for me outside the clinic.
Terima kasih banyak atas bantuan yang tuan berikan.
Thank you very much for the assistance you provided. (formal)
Saya ingin mengucapkan terima kasih kepada semua sukarelawan yang terlibat.
I would like to thank all the volunteers involved. (formal)
Use kerana + clause for an action or reason and atas + noun phrase for the thing appreciated. Kepada marks the people being thanked after mengucapkan terima kasih. Everyday responses include sama-sama; the thanks guide covers fuller social choices and degrees of formality.
The expression has lexicalized gratitude even though kasih elsewhere relates to affection or giving. Do not try to create a tense-marked form of the formula.
Penerima: recipient
Penerima names the person or organization that receives something. It is neutral in compounds and frequent in administrative, financial, postal, and award contexts.
Nama penerima mesti sepadan dengan nama pada akaun bank.
The recipient's name must match the name on the bank account. (formal)
Setiap penerima anugerah diberi masa dua minit untuk berucap.
Each award recipient was given two minutes to speak.
Bantuan itu disalurkan terus kepada penerima yang layak.
The aid was distributed directly to eligible recipients. (formal)
Penerima is productive, but Malaysian Malay may choose a more specific noun: pesakit receives treatment, tetamu receives hospitality, and pemenang receives a prize. A possible derivative is not automatically the most natural label.
Penerimaan: receipt, acceptance, admission, and reception
Penerimaan turns the event or result into a noun. Its interpretation depends heavily on the following complement.
| Collocation | Usual meaning | Register |
|---|---|---|
| pengesahan penerimaan | acknowledgment of receipt | formal |
| penerimaan pelajar | student admission/intake | formal |
| penerimaan masyarakat | public acceptance/reception | neutral/formal |
| kaunter penerimaan | reception counter | neutral |
Sistem itu menghantar pengesahan penerimaan sebaik sahaja borang disimpan.
The system sends an acknowledgment of receipt as soon as the form is saved. (formal)
Penerimaan masyarakat terhadap pengangkutan awam baharu itu semakin positif.
Public reception of the new public-transport service is becoming more positive. (formal)
The noun does not necessarily mean the same as English reception desk in every context. Learn the whole collocation, not merely the derivative.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding kepada before the received object
❌ Siti menerima kepada hadiah itu dengan gembira.
Incorrect—menerima takes the received item directly.
✅ Siti menerima hadiah itu dengan gembira selepas majlis tamat.
Siti accepted the gift happily after the ceremony ended.
2. Using bare actor-first terima in a formal confirmation
⚠️ Pihak kami terima permohonan tuan pada 14 Mei.
Too conversational for the intended formal confirmation.
✅ Pihak kami telah menerima permohonan tuan pada 14 Mei.
We received your application on 14 May. (formal)
3. Separating passive di-
❌ Bayaran itu di terima selepas tarikh tutup.
Incorrect spacing—the passive prefix in diterima is attached.
✅ Bayaran itu diterima selepas tarikh tutup pendaftaran.
The payment was received after registration closed.
4. Using the wrong connector after terima kasih
❌ Terima kasih kepada membantu saya membawa kotak ini.
Incorrect connector—kepada introduces a person, not an action clause.
✅ Terima kasih kerana membantu saya membawa kotak ini.
Thank you for helping me carry this box.
5. Adding an English tense ending
❌ Kami menerimaed keputusan itu semalam.
Incorrect—Malay verbs do not take an English past ending.
✅ Kami menerima keputusan itu semalam walaupun agak kecewa.
We accepted the decision yesterday although we were rather disappointed.
Key Takeaways
Use bare terima in commands, object voice, and labeled conversational actor-first usage; use menerima as the careful actor-voice form for both receipt and acceptance. Diterima foregrounds what is received or approved. Learn terima kasih as the fixed gratitude formula, penerima as recipient, and the collocation-sensitive noun penerimaan for receipt, acceptance, admission, or reception.
