The beli family organizes a purchase around the buyer, purchased item, or beneficiary. Bare beli occurs in commands, object voice, and informal speech; actor-voice membeli centers the buyer's action; passive dibeli centers the item; and benefactive membelikan gives the person for whom the purchase is made a privileged place in the argument structure. Pembeli and pembelian name the buyer and purchase process.
No person or tense conjugation
The verb form does not change with the buyer or time. Separate markers and time phrases supply those meanings.
| Function | Present/general | Past context | Future context |
|---|---|---|---|
| actor voice | Saya membeli buku. | Semalam saya membeli buku. | Esok saya akan membeli buku. |
| object voice | Buku itu saya beli. | Buku itu sudah saya beli. | Buku itu akan saya beli. |
| passive | Buku itu dibeli. | Buku itu telah dibeli. | Buku itu akan dibeli. |
| benefactive | Saya membelikan adik buku. | Saya telah membelikan adik buku. | Saya akan membelikan adik buku. |
Membeli, dibeli, and membelikan are not tense forms. Sudah, telah, akan, semalam, and esok remain separate.
Bare beli in commands and object voice
Bare beli is natural in an imperative, where the addressee is the understood buyer.
Beli dua bungkus gula semasa singgah di kedai nanti.
Buy two packets of sugar when you stop at the shop later.
It also occurs after a first- or second-person actor in object voice. The purchased item comes first as the discourse pivot.
Kasut ini saya beli semasa jualan murah hujung tahun.
I bought these shoes during the year-end sale.
Buku rujukan yang awak beli itu sangat berguna untuk kursus ini.
The reference book that you bought is very useful for this course.
Actor-first Saya beli kasut ini is common (informal) Malaysian speech. In careful actor-voice prose, use Saya membeli kasut ini. Bare beli is therefore not a Malay infinitive; the construction and register license it.
Membeli centers the buyer's purchase
Membeli is the standard actor-voice form with the purchased item as its object.
Nadia membeli buku tentang sejarah Kuala Lumpur untuk tugasan sekolahnya.
Nadia bought a book about Kuala Lumpur's history for her school assignment.
Pihak hospital sedang membeli peralatan baharu untuk makmal tersebut.
The hospital is purchasing new equipment for the laboratory. (formal)
Kami tidak membeli tiket lebih awal kerana jadual perjalanan belum pasti.
We did not buy tickets in advance because the travel schedule was not settled.
The required pattern membeli buku contains a direct purchased object. A separate untuk + person/purpose phrase can identify the beneficiary or purpose without changing the verb's argument structure: membeli buku untuk anaknya.
Dibeli centers the purchased item
Passive dibeli makes the purchased item the subject and can omit an unimportant buyer.
Buku itu dibeli oleh pihak perpustakaan pada awal tahun.
The book was purchased by the library at the beginning of the year.
Semua kerusi baharu itu dibeli daripada pengeluar tempatan.
All the new chairs were purchased from a local manufacturer.
Hadiah tersebut akan dibeli selepas kami mengetahui jumlah sumbangan yang diterima.
The gift will be bought after we know the amount of donations received.
The agent may follow oleh, while the seller or source follows daripada. Keep passive di- attached: dibeli daripada kedai, not di beli. Locative di kedai remains separate: Buku itu dibeli di kedai berhampiran stesen.
Membelikan promotes the beneficiary
Membelikan means buy something for someone. In its characteristic two-object pattern, the beneficiary directly follows the verb and the purchased theme follows that.
Ibu membelikan anaknya sebuah buku cerita baharu.
Mother bought her child a new storybook.
Saya membelikan datuk ubat di farmasi sebelum pulang.
I bought Grandfather medicine at the pharmacy before going home.
Mereka membelikan guru itu hadiah sebagai tanda penghargaan.
They bought the teacher a gift as a token of appreciation.
The required membelikan anak buku makes the child the beneficiary and buku the purchased thing. A transparent alternative keeps ordinary membeli and expresses the beneficiary with untuk:
Ibu membeli sebuah buku cerita baharu untuk anaknya.
Mother bought a new storybook for her child.
The two constructions describe a similar event but organize it differently. Membelikan anaknya buku integrates the beneficiary into the verb's core participant frame; membeli buku untuk anaknya foregrounds the item and adds a purpose/beneficiary phrase.
The broader ditransitive guide compares how transfer verbs distribute theme, recipient, and beneficiary roles.
Beneficiary-centered passive is also possible:
Anaknya dibelikan sebuah basikal untuk pergi ke sekolah.
Her child was bought a bicycle for travelling to school.
The child is the passive subject. If the bicycle should be subject, use Basikal itu dibeli untuk anaknya.
Pembeli and pembelian
Pembeli is the buyer; pembelian is a purchase or the process of purchasing.
Pembeli perlu menyimpan resit asal untuk membuat tuntutan jaminan.
Buyers need to keep the original receipt to make a warranty claim.
Pembelian tiket secara dalam talian ditutup satu jam sebelum bas bertolak.
Online ticket purchases close one hour before the bus departs. (formal)
Pihak sekolah meluluskan pembelian lima buah komputer riba.
The school approved the purchase of five laptop computers.
Pembelian can name the transaction or institutional procurement. Barang belian means purchased goods, while beli-belah/membeli-belah is the lexicalized activity “shopping.”
Kami pergi membeli-belah di pusat bandar selepas makan tengah hari.
We went shopping in the city centre after lunch.
The hyphen belongs to the reduplicated lexical form membeli-belah, not to ordinary derivatives such as membelikan or pembelian.
Common collocations and participant choices

| membeli X untuk Y | item X plus separate beneficiary | membeli buku untuk anak |

Common Mistakes
1. Treating beli as an infinitive after every subject
⚠️ Syarikat itu beli tiga kenderaan baharu tahun lalu.
Too colloquial for the intended careful report—use actor-voice membeli.
✅ Syarikat itu membeli tiga buah kenderaan baharu tahun lalu.
The company bought three new vehicles last year. (formal)
2. Adding a tense ending
❌ Semalam saya membelied sebuah kamus.
Incorrect—membeli does not take an English past ending.
✅ Semalam saya membeli sebuah kamus di kedai buku universiti.
Yesterday I bought a dictionary at the university bookshop.
3. Reversing beneficiary and theme after membelikan
❌ Ibu membelikan buku anaknya.
Ambiguous/wrong for the intended ‘bought her child a book’; buku anaknya reads as ‘her child's book’.
✅ Ibu membelikan anaknya sebuah buku.
Mother bought her child a book.
4. Separating passive di-
❌ Kerusi itu di beli di kedai perabot lama.
Incorrect spacing—the first di- is passive and attaches to beli.
✅ Kerusi itu dibeli di kedai perabot lama.
The chair was bought at the old furniture shop.
5. Confusing pembeli and pembelian
❌ Pembelian itu meminta resit daripada juruwang.
Incorrect noun—an act of purchase cannot ask for a receipt; the buyer can.
✅ Pembeli itu meminta resit daripada juruwang.
The buyer asked the cashier for a receipt.
Key Takeaways
Use membeli for careful buyer-centered actor voice, bare beli in commands, object voice, and labeled informal speech, and dibeli when the purchased item is the passive subject. Membelikan Y X integrates beneficiary Y before purchased item X; membeli X untuk Y expresses the beneficiary separately. Pembeli is a buyer, pembelian a purchase, and none of these forms changes for person or tense.
