mula and memulakan: Verb Family and Usage in Malaysian Malay

The mula family separates onset from initiation. Kelas mula presents the class itself as beginning; Saya mula bekerja shares the subject across “begin” and the following activity; memulakan projek foregrounds an actor who starts an object; and dimulakan makes that object the passive subject. Permulaan names a beginning, while awal locates something near the early part of a period.

This page focuses on lexical choice and complement structure within the family. The suffix -kan guide, passive di- guide, and other Word Formation pages explain the general affix rules.

The control guide explains why the subject of mula bekerja is understood as the worker without an infinitive form.

Mula as event onset

When an event itself begins, mula can be the onset predicate. Bermula is a common fuller alternative, especially in careful writing.

Kelas mula pada pukul sembilan pagi setiap hari Isnin.

The class starts at nine every Monday morning.

Hujan mula turun selepas kami meninggalkan kawasan pantai.

The rain started falling after we left the coastal area.

Pendaftaran akan bermula pada 3 Januari dan berakhir pada 31 Januari.

Registration will begin on 3 January and end on 31 January. (formal)

The required Kelas mula is natural in speech and simple scheduling. Kelas bermula often sounds more polished in an official timetable. Neither form is an infinitive.

Mula before another activity

Mula + verb says that the subject enters the initial phase of that activity.

Saya mula belajar bahasa Melayu selepas berpindah ke Johor.

I started learning Malay after moving to Johor.

Mereka sudah mula membaiki bumbung yang rosak.

They have started repairing the damaged roof.

Daun pokok itu mula menguning apabila musim kering tiba.

The tree's leaves begin to yellow when the dry season arrives.

There is no required untuk corresponding to English to: mula bekerja, not mechanically mula untuk bekerja. The subject of mula is also understood as the subject of the following activity unless a fuller construction supplies another participant.

Compact bare-root sequences such as mula kerja also occur in conversation, where kerja can be understood as an activity. They do not make bare mula a freely transitive substitute before every noun. In careful prose, make the activity explicit with mula bekerja/mula menjalankan projek, or foreground the initiated object with memulakan kerja/projek.

💡
In X mula V, X begins doing or undergoing V. In X memulakan Y, X initiates a separate event or object Y. The presence of a direct object motivates the actor-voice derivative.

Memulakan takes what is initiated

Memulakan is transitive. Its object can be a task, project, meeting, career, conversation, or process.

Kontraktor itu memulakan kerja pembaikan jambatan lebih awal daripada jadual.

The contractor began the bridge repair work ahead of schedule. (formal)

Pengerusi memulakan mesyuarat dengan ucapan ringkas.

The chair began the meeting with a short address.

Nadia memulakan kerjayanya sebagai jururawat di sebuah klinik desa.

Nadia began her career as a nurse at a rural clinic.

The required memulakan pekerjaan is formal and process-focused. In everyday Malaysian usage, memulakan kerja pembaikan is often less heavy than memulakan pekerjaan pembaikan. Pekerjaan can mean employment/job as well as a defined body of work, so context matters.

An initiator may also start another person on an activity, but Malay usually states the causation more explicitly rather than forcing every English “start someone doing” into memulakan.

Dimulakan centers the event

Mesyuarat dimulakan tepat pada pukul sepuluh oleh pengerusi baharu.

The meeting was opened promptly at ten by the new chair.

Projek tersebut akan dimulakan selepas musim tengkujuh berakhir.

The project will be started after the monsoon season ends.

Siasatan dalaman sudah dimulakan untuk mengenal pasti punca kehilangan data.

An internal investigation has been initiated to identify the cause of the data loss. (formal)

Passive di- attaches in dimulakan. Locative di pejabat remains separate. Mesyuarat bermula presents spontaneous or schedule-based onset; Mesyuarat dimulakan oleh pengerusi explicitly presents an initiating actor.

Permulaan: the beginning or opening stage

Permulaan is a noun naming the beginning, start, or initial section.

Permulaan cerita itu agak perlahan, tetapi bahagian akhirnya sangat menarik.

The beginning of the story is rather slow, but its ending is very engaging.

Pada permulaan projek, semua ahli bersetuju tentang pembahagian tugas.

At the start of the project, all members agreed on the division of tasks.

Upacara yang menandakan permulaan musim menuai diadakan di balai kampung.

The ceremony marking the start of the harvest season was held at the village hall.

Pada mulanya is a fixed adverbial meaning “at first/initially” and often introduces a later contrast.

Pada mulanya saya ragu-ragu, tetapi penjelasan juruteknik itu meyakinkan saya.

At first I was doubtful, but the technician's explanation convinced me.

Mula versus awal

Mula concerns the onset itself; awal means early or the early part of a span. Awal can modify a time noun or form an adjective predicate.

Kami tiba awal, sebelum pendaftaran mula.

We arrived early, before registration started.

Pada awal bulan, jumlah permohonan masih rendah.

At the beginning of the month, the number of applications was still low.

Kerja itu bermula pada awal tahun dan siap enam bulan kemudian.

The work began early in the year and was completed six months later.

Do not substitute one mechanically for English beginning/early. Permulaan cerita is the story's beginning; awal cerita is its early part and may be less sharply bounded.

Common Mistakes

1. Using a compressed bare-root frame in careful prose

⚠️ Syarikat itu mula projek baharu semalam.

Possible as compressed conversation, but too colloquial for the intended careful actor-initiator frame.

✅ Syarikat itu memulakan projek baharu semalam.

The company began a new project yesterday.

2. Adding untuk before the shared-subject activity

⚠️ Lina mula untuk menyusun fail lama selepas makan tengah hari.

Possible in a fuller construction, but awkward in this ordinary same-subject onset frame.

✅ Lina mula menyusun fail lama selepas makan tengah hari.

Lina started arranging the old files after lunch.

3. Confusing onset with early arrival

❌ Kami mula ke pejabat sebelum orang lain tiba.

Wrong for the intended meaning ‘we arrived early’; mula marks onset, not earliness.

✅ Kami tiba awal di pejabat sebelum orang lain sampai.

We arrived at the office early before anyone else.

4. Separating passive di-

❌ Mesyuarat itu di mulakan oleh pengarah.

Incorrect spacing—the passive verb dimulakan is one word.

✅ Mesyuarat itu dimulakan oleh pengarah pada pukul sembilan.

The meeting was opened by the director at nine.

5. Adding a tense ending

❌ Kelas mulaed lewat semalam.

Incorrect—mula has no English past ending.

✅ Kelas mula lewat semalam kerana guru terperangkap dalam kesesakan.

The class started late yesterday because the teacher was caught in traffic.

Key Takeaways

Use mula/bermula when an event itself begins, mula + verb when a subject begins an activity, and transitive memulakan + object when an actor initiates a separate event or process. Passive dimulakan foregrounds that process. Permulaan is the beginning, while awal means early or the early portion of a period.
