The root bantu “help” forms a mostly regular active–passive family, but its nouns have developed socially specific meanings. Bare bantu is common in requests and after modal words, membantu is the neutral active verb, and dibantu centers the person or task receiving help. Bantuan means help, assistance, or aid, while pembantu can mean an assistant, shop helper, or domestic worker depending on its complement and social setting.
This is a useful reminder that productive morphology does not prevent lexicalization. Knowing that pem- can form an agent noun does not tell you the tone of bare pembantu in a household context. The general affix system belongs to the voice overview; this page focuses on the family's attested frames and connotations.
Family map
| Form | Usual frame | Core use |
|---|---|---|
| bantu | bantu + person/task | help; bare command or conversational predicate |

Bantuan kerajaan can refer to public financial or material assistance, while pembantu kedai names a shop assistant. These meanings are conventional collocations, not merely predictable English equivalents.
No agreement or tense forms
Membantu remains constant across subject and time:
| Context | Malay pattern | Meaning source |
|---|---|---|
| habit | Saya membantu setiap minggu. | setiap minggu |
| past | Dia membantu semalam. | semalam |
| plural progressive | Mereka sedang membantu. | sedang |
| future | Kami akan membantu esok. | akan + esok |
Saya membantu jiran mengangkat barang setiap kali dia pulang dari pasar.
I help my neighbor carry her things whenever she returns from the market.
Mereka sedang membantu mangsa banjir membersihkan rumah masing-masing.
They are helping flood victims clean their homes.
The predicate does not gain an ending equivalent to helps or helped. Aspect markers remain separate: sudah membantu, sedang membantu, akan membantu.
Bare bantu in requests and modal environments
The root is natural in imperatives and direct requests.
Tolong bantu saya mengangkat kotak ini ke tingkat atas.
Please help me carry this box upstairs.
Bantu adik awak siapkan beg sekolahnya dahulu.
Help your younger sibling get their schoolbag ready first.
It is also common after boleh in conversation: Boleh bantu saya? “Can you help me?” In careful writing with an explicit actor, membantu is the normal active form. Bare bantu after a subject—Dia bantu saya—is natural (informal) Malaysian speech but usually becomes Dia membantu saya in edited prose.
The base is not an infinitive. It does not appear because English has to help. Its distribution comes from Malay commands, modality, and register.
bantu and tolong overlap in requests
Tolong can be a politeness marker before an instruction and a lexical verb meaning help. This creates several natural request patterns: Tolong bantu saya “Please help me,” Tolong saya “Help me,” and Boleh bantu saya? “Can you help me?”
Tolong bantu saya semak alamat pelanggan sebelum bungkusan ini dihantar.
Please help me check the customer's address before this parcel is sent.
Boleh tolong pegang pintu ini sementara saya membawa kotak keluar?
Could you please hold this door while I carry the box out?
In the second sentence, tolong softens the request and the requested action is pegang pintu. In Dia menolong jirannya, full active menolong is a lexical verb close to membantu. Membantu is broadly neutral and common in formal descriptions; menolong often feels more personal or action-oriented, though the meanings overlap.
Do not assume that tolong bantu is redundant in a request. The first word can manage politeness while bantu names the requested contribution. In dense formal prose, one full lexical verb is usually sufficient.
membantu takes the recipient directly
Membantu can take a person, group, institution, task, or process as its direct object. A person does not normally need kepada after the verb.
Pegawai kaunter itu membantu saya mengisi borang permohonan.
The counter officer helped me fill in the application form.
Dana tersebut membantu keluarga berpendapatan rendah membayar kos persekolahan.
The fund helps low-income families pay schooling costs. (formal)
Teknologi ini membantu dalam proses mengesan kebocoran paip dengan lebih cepat.
This technology helps in the process of detecting pipe leaks more quickly. (formal)
In membantu saya mengisi, saya is the person helped and also the understood actor of mengisi. No Malay infinitive marker is required. A dalam phrase is useful when the help contributes to a broader process rather than acting directly on one recipient.
Membantu untuk + action occurs, especially in formal explanatory prose, but direct membantu mengurangkan kos is usually leaner than membantu untuk mengurangkan kos when the subject itself contributes to the reduction.
People, tools, and circumstances can all help
The subject of membantu need not be a deliberate human helper. A tool, policy, payment, or favorable condition can contribute toward a result. In such clauses, the following verb often states the enabled outcome directly.
Aplikasi itu membantu pengguna mengesan perbelanjaan harian dengan lebih mudah.
The application helps users track daily spending more easily.
Hujan pada awal bulan membantu mengurangkan risiko kebakaran hutan.
Rain at the beginning of the month helped reduce the risk of forest fires.
In the first, pengguna is both the person helped and the understood actor of mengesan. In the second, rain is not an intentional agent; it contributes causally to a reduction. English help to reduce does not require an overt equivalent of to: membantu mengurangkan is complete.
The collocation amat membantu “very helpful” evaluates a contribution, while turut membantu “also helped” adds it to other factors.
Penerangan ringkas pada setiap halaman amat membantu pengguna baharu.
The brief explanation on every page is very helpful to new users.
This predicate use shows why English helpful may still correspond to Malay membantu, not necessarily a separately derived adjective.
dibantu and object voice
Passive dibantu makes the recipient or task the subject. The helper can follow oleh.
Saya dibantu oleh rakan sekerja ketika menyediakan laporan tahunan.
I was helped by a colleague while preparing the annual report.
Mangsa yang terperangkap itu berjaya dibantu keluar oleh pasukan penyelamat.
The trapped victim was successfully helped out by the rescue team.
Write dibantu solid. In dibantu di pusat pemindahan, the first di- is a passive prefix, while locative di before pusat is separate.
With a first- or second-person actor and a fronted object, Malay can use object voice:
Permohonan itu saya bantu siapkan sebelum tarikh tutup.
I helped complete that application before the deadline.
Here permohonan itu is the discourse object, saya is the actor, and bare bantu follows it. The construction is not the same as an unmarked subject-first active clause.
bantuan: help, aid, and institutional support
Bantuan is the general action/result noun. Its exact translation depends on the provider and form of support.
Keluarga itu menerima bantuan kerajaan selepas rumah mereka rosak akibat banjir.
The family received government assistance after their home was damaged by flooding.
Jika perlukan bantuan, tekan butang merah di sebelah pintu.
If you need help, press the red button beside the door.
Permohonan bantuan kewangan perlu disertakan dengan penyata pendapatan.
Applications for financial assistance must be accompanied by an income statement. (formal)
Common collocations include meminta bantuan, menerima bantuan, menghulurkan bantuan “extend help,” bantuan kecemasan, and bantuan kewangan. Sebuah bantuan is generally not used like English a help; quantify the package if needed: satu bentuk bantuan, dua skim bantuan.
pembantu and socially specific meanings
Pembantu is an assistant or helper, but compounds specify the role more precisely.
Pembantu kedai itu menyusun barang baharu sebelum premis dibuka.
The shop assistant arranged the new stock before the premises opened.
Beliau bekerja sebagai pembantu penyelidik sambilan di universiti.
She works as a part-time research assistant at the university.
In household contexts, pembantu rumah traditionally means a domestic helper. Contemporary formal and rights-conscious language often uses pekerja domestik, especially when employment status and protections matter. Bare pembantu may sound vague or reduce a worker to a subordinate role; use the specific occupational title a person or institution recognizes.
Majikan wajib menyediakan tempat tinggal yang selamat untuk pekerja domestik mereka.
Employers must provide safe accommodation for their domestic workers. (formal)
The old Malaysian occupational title pembantu perubatan is still encountered, but the current official title is Penolong Pegawai Perubatan. Learners should preserve an institution's official title rather than generate one solely from pembantu + field.
Reciprocal help and idioms
Bantu-membantu and saling membantu present mutual help. The hyphen in bantu-membantu belongs to actual reduplicative morphology; ordinary derivatives membantu, bantuan, and pembantu are solid.
Penduduk kampung bantu-membantu ketika bekalan air terputus.
The villagers helped one another when the water supply was cut off.
Ahli pasukan perlu saling membantu apabila beban kerja meningkat.
Team members need to help one another when the workload increases.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding kepada before the person helped
❌ Pegawai itu membantu kepada saya mengisi borang.
Incorrect—the recipient of membantu is a direct object.
✅ Pegawai itu membantu saya mengisi borang pendaftaran.
The officer helped me fill in the registration form.
2. Using the verb where an assistance noun is required
❌ Mereka memohon membantu kecemasan selepas rumah rosak.
Incorrect category—the object of memohon should be the assistance noun bantuan.
✅ Mereka memohon bantuan kecemasan selepas rumah mereka rosak.
They applied for emergency assistance after their home was damaged.
3. Separating passive di-
❌ Pesakit itu di bantu oleh dua orang jururawat.
Incorrect spacing—the passive prefix is attached.
✅ Pesakit itu dibantu oleh dua orang jururawat untuk bangun dari katil.
The patient was helped by two nurses to get out of bed.
4. Using bantuan for a person
❌ Nadia ialah bantuan penyelidik di makmal itu.
Incorrect noun—a person serving as an assistant is a pembantu.
✅ Nadia ialah pembantu penyelidik di makmal tersebut.
Nadia is a research assistant at that laboratory.
5. Generating an occupational title mechanically
❌ Sesiapa yang membantu dalam bidang perubatan boleh terus dipanggil pembantu perubatan.
Incorrect practice—occupational titles are lexical and institutional, not freely generated.
✅ Gunakan gelaran Penolong Pegawai Perubatan dalam dokumen rasmi jawatan itu.
Use the title Assistant Medical Officer in official documents for that position. (formal)
Key Takeaways
Use bare bantu in commands and conversational modal patterns, membantu + person/task for neutral active clauses, and dibantu when the recipient is passive subject. Bantuan names help or institutional aid; pembantu names an assistant but acquires specific occupational and social meanings in compounds. Use respectful current job labels, keep genuine derivatives solid, and remember that neither verb form changes for person or tense.
