di-: Formation and Allomorphy in Malaysian Malay

The passive prefix di- has one stable written shape: attach di directly to a transitive verbal base and preserve the base's spelling. Thus baca becomes dibaca, tulis becomes ditulis, and ambil becomes diambil. There is no nasal assimilation and no deletion of an initial p, t, s, or k.

One space carries a major grammatical contrast in standard Malaysian Rumi. Passive di- is a prefix and is written solid with the verb; locative di β€œat, in, on” is a preposition and is written separately from the place expression. This page concentrates on formation and spelling; the meaning page and usage page explain passive interpretation and clause structure.

The stable formation rule

In linguistic analysis, write the abstract prefix with a hyphen: di-. In actual Malay words, omit the hyphen and space: di- + baca β†’ dibaca. The base remains visible throughout.

These forms are (neutral). The prefix itself is not a tense marker: sudah, akan, time phrases, and context locate the event in time.

πŸ’‘
The spelling operation is simpler than meN- formation: prefix di-, preserve every letter of the base, and write the result as one word.

There is no nasal allomorphy or root deletion

The active prefix meN- changes shape and, in productive patterns, can delete certain root-initial consonants: tulis β†’ menulis, pilih β†’ memilih, kirim β†’ mengirim. Passive di- does none of that. It is not built by replacing the surface beginning of the active form letter for letter; it attaches to the recognizable base.

sapumenyapudisapuinitial s

Lantai itu disapu setiap pagi.

Tiga orang calon dipilih untuk temu duga akhir.

Three candidates were selected for the final interview.

There is also no special vowel-initial variant. di- + ambil is simply diambil. Do not insert an apostrophe, hyphen, n, or ng between the vowels.

Kunci itu diambil dari laci meja.

The key was taken from the desk drawer.

Prefix di- versus locative preposition di

The two forms sound alike but belong to different grammatical categories. Passive di- attaches to a verb and directs attention to the patient. Locative di stands before a place or spatial expression and means β€œat, in, on.”

FunctionStructureSpellingExample
passive prefixdi- + verbsoliddibaca, ditulis, diambil
locative prepositiondi + placeseparatedi rumah, di pejabat, di atas meja

Both can occur close together without conflict:

Laporan itu ditulis di pejabat cawangan.

The report was written at the branch office.

Here ditulis is one passive verb, while di pejabat cawangan is a separate locative phrase. English does not encode this distinction through spacing, so English-speaking learners must treat the Malay space as grammatical information.

Pintu utama dibuka pada pukul lapan, tetapi kaunter di tingkat dua dibuka pada pukul sembilan.

The main door opens at eight, but the counter on the second floor opens at nine.

In the second clause, di tingkat dua is locative and separate; both instances of dibuka are passive forms written solid.

πŸ’‘
Use a quick category test: if the next element names an action that can affect a patient, di- is probably a solid prefix; if it names a location, di is a separate preposition.

Which bases can take passive di-?

Because di- forms a patient-oriented passive, its base must support a transitive event. Baca, tulis, ambil, kirim, buka, and pilih can all relate an actor to a patient. A basic intransitive verb such as tidur β€œsleep” has no ordinary patient, so ditidur is not the standard passive β€œbe slept.”

Malay can first build a transitive base with -kan or -i, then prefix di- to that larger base. Preserve the suffix:

Root familyTransitive base in analysisPassive formMeaning
namanama + -kandinamakanbe named
bersihbersih + -kandibersihkanbe cleaned
tidurtidur + -kanditidurkanbe put to sleep
dudukduduk + -ididudukibe occupied; be inhabited

Bilik rawatan dibersihkan selepas setiap sesi rawatan.

The treatment room is cleaned after each treatment session.

Bayi itu sudah ditidurkan oleh ibunya.

The baby has been put to sleep by its mother.

This is not direct prefixation to an adjective or intransitive root. The suffix creates or selects the transitive stem to which passive di- attaches.

Finding the base in a dictionary

Standard Malaysian dictionaries organize derived words under or in relation to their roots. To analyze ditulis, remove the one stable prefix and look up tulis. For dibersihkan, recognize di- + bersih + -kan and consult the family under bersih. Do not look for a fictional base itulis or strip the first two letters from a locative phrase such as di rumah.

Perkataan yang tidak difahami boleh disemak dalam kamus.

Words that are not understood can be checked in a dictionary.

In difahami, the relevant family is faham with transitive -i; the standard passive form is written solid. Actual lexical families must still be checked, because a mechanically possible-looking string is not guaranteed to be conventional.

Common Mistakes

Separating the passive prefix

❌ Surat itu di tulis semalam.

Incorrect β€” passive di- is a prefix and cannot be separated from tulis.

βœ… Surat itu ditulis semalam.

The letter was written yesterday.

Joining the locative preposition to a place

❌ Kami menunggu dipejabat.

Incorrect β€” locative di is a separate preposition before pejabat.

βœ… Kami menunggu di pejabat.

We are waiting at the office.

Copying meN- deletion into the passive

❌ Nama saya diulis pada borang itu.

Incorrect β€” the root-initial t of tulis remains after di-.

βœ… Nama saya ditulis pada borang itu.

My name is written on that form.

Inserting an allomorph before a vowel

❌ Bungkusan itu dinambil oleh jiran saya.

Incorrect β€” di- does not acquire n before ambil.

βœ… Bungkusan itu diambil oleh jiran saya.

The parcel was collected by my neighbour.

Hyphenating an ordinary passive word

❌ Pintu itu di-buka pada pukul lapan.

Incorrect standard spelling β€” the hyphen belongs only in the analytical label di-.

βœ… Pintu itu dibuka pada pukul lapan.

The door is opened at eight.

Key Takeaways

  • Form a passive word as di- + transitive base, written solid: dibaca, ditulis, diambil, dikirim.
  • Preserve the base spelling; di- has no nasal allomorphy and causes no root-consonant deletion.
  • Write passive di- solid with a verb, but locative di separately before a place.
  • A suffix in a derived transitive base remains visible: dinamakan, dibersihkan, ditidurkan, diduduki.
  • Use di- with a transitive lexical family, not mechanically with every root.
