harus and seharusnya: Verb Family and Usage

Harus expresses strong necessity: an action is required by a rule, circumstance, goal, or firm judgment. The same word can also support an inference, as in she must already know. The family then shifts perspective: seharusnya marks what is expected or proper, keharusan names a requirement, and mengharuskan presents a rule or situation as the cause of an obligation.

No conjugation, but several kinds of necessity

Harus does not change for person, number, or tense. The words around it express time, completion, and negation.

Tomorrow I have to leave before sunrise.

Waktu masih kecil, kami harus berbagi satu kamar.

When we were children, we had to share one room.

English changes must to had to for past obligation. Indonesian keeps harus and uses waktu masih kecil, kemarin, or other context.

Harus for rules, circumstances, and goals

The source of necessity need not be explicitly stated. It may be an official rule, a practical condition, someone's authority, or the speaker's strong assessment of what achieving a goal requires.

This medicine must be stored in a cool, dry place.

Kalau ingin mengejar kereta pertama, kita harus naik taksi.

If we want to catch the first train, we have to take a taxi.

You must be honest with the doctor about all the symptoms.

Because harus is a modal, voice marking belongs to the following predicate.

Every electrical connection must be inspected by a certified technician.

We must inspect this final section one more time.

Do not attach di- to the modal itself. Voice alternatives are explained more fully in the Indonesian voice overview.

Harus as a strong inference

Harus can express a conclusion that the speaker treats as compelling rather than an imposed duty. English uses epistemic must similarly. Context is crucial: an animate subject does not automatically mean obligation.

The light in her room is on; she must still be at the office.

All the doors are locked from the inside; the perpetrator must still be in this building.

There is no trace of water on the floor, so the leak must come from the wall.

In a bare command-like context, an obligation reading is stronger. When evidence or reasoning is supplied, an inference reading becomes easier. There is no special morphology that disambiguates the two.

In everyday conversation, pasti is often the more idiomatic marker of a high-confidence conclusion. Harus is especially useful when the reasoning is presented as logical necessity, and with a human subject it can remain ambiguous between inference and obligation.

Harus sudah: a required or inferred prior state

Sudah follows harus when completion or an achieved state must precede a reference point. Depending on context, the combination means either must already have as a requirement or must have already as an inference.

Participants must already be in the hall fifteen minutes before the event.

By the time we arrive, the caterer must already have prepared all the tables.

The parcel is not in the lobby; the courier must have already taken it upstairs.

Changing the order changes the structure. Sudah harus berangkat means that the point at which leaving is necessary has already arrived: it is already time to leave / now must leave.

It is getting dark, so we already have to descend the mountain.

πŸ’‘
Read the word immediately after harus as part of what necessity takes scope over: harus sudah selesai requires completion, while sudah harus selesai says the requirement to finish is already in force.

Tidak harus: optional, not forbidden

Negation before harus removes the obligation. Tidak harus datang means coming is optional; it does not mean that coming is prohibited. For prohibition, use tidak boleh or jangan.

You do not have to bring a laptop because computers are already available.

The answer does not have to be long, but the reasoning must be clear.

Guests do not have to stay overnight; they may go home after dinner.

By contrast, harus tidak + predicate places negation inside the required content: it is necessary not to. This order is possible but often formal or contrastive; tidak boleh or jangan may be more idiomatic for a direct ban.

To preserve anonymity, the final report must not contain participants' full names.

Seharusnya: what is expected, proper, or overdue

Seharusnya usually means should or ought to. It invokes a norm, plan, reasonable expectation, or proper state rather than presenting the action as an uncompromising requirement. It can describe an unrealized past expectation without changing form.

Kita seharusnya memberi tahu warga sebelum jalan ini ditutup.

We should notify residents before this road is closed.

Bus berikutnya seharusnya tiba dalam sepuluh menit.

The next bus should arrive in ten minutes.

Mereka seharusnya mengirim kontraknya kemarin, tetapi belum ada kabar.

They should have sent the contract yesterday, but there has been no news.

With this much evidence, the problem should be easy to resolve.

Sudah seharusnya strengthens the sense that something is proper, due, or long overdue. It often occurs in evaluative public language.

Sudah seharusnya pekerja menerima upah tepat waktu.

Workers should, quite properly, receive their wages on time.

The difference from harus is not merely politeness. Harus asserts necessity; seharusnya measures reality against a norm or expectation, leaving open whether reality follows it.

Keharusan, mengharuskan, and diharuskan

Keharusan is a noun meaning a necessity, obligation, or requirement. It can follow menjadi, be modified, or serve as an argument.

Kemampuan membaca data kini menjadi keharusan bagi banyak pekerjaan.

The ability to read data has now become a necessity for many jobs.

Keharusan memakai seragam berlaku mulai hari Senin.

Mengharuskan is transitive: its subject is the rule, circumstance, system, or authority that requires an object to do or undergo something. The required participant normally appears directly after it.

Perubahan jadwal mengharuskan kami mencari penginapan tambahan.

The schedule change requires us to find additional accommodation.

Peraturan baru mengharuskan restoran mencantumkan informasi alergen.

The new regulation requires restaurants to list allergen information.

Passive diharuskan makes the obligated participant prominent and is especially frequent in official instructions.

Pelamar diharuskan mengunggah ijazah dalam format PDF.

Applicants are required to upload their diploma in PDF format.

Kami diharuskan meninggalkan gedung selama pemeriksaan keamanan.

We were required to leave the building during the security inspection.

These are established, productive members of the family, but not interchangeable frames: a person harus pergi, while a rule mengharuskan seseorang pergi.

πŸ’‘
To add an explicit causer of the obligation, change the valency: kami harus pergi presents our obligation, while peraturan mengharuskan kami pergi presents the regulation as causing it.
