Perlu presents something as needed for a goal, situation, or person. It can stand before an action (perlu pergi “need to leave”), relate a participant to a thing (saya perlu bantuan “I need help”), or appear impersonally (perlu ada perubahan “there needs to be a change”). The related transitive verb memerlukan explicitly selects what a subject requires.
This page explains that flexible grammar and contrasts need with strong obligation. See harus for requirements that close alternatives; voice formation and individual lexical entries remain outside this page.
Perlu before an action
As a modal-like necessity predicate, perlu stands separately before a verb.
Saya perlu pergi sekarang agar tidak terlambat.
I need to leave now so that I am not late.
Kita perlu membicarakan anggaran sebelum rapat besok.
We need to discuss the budget before tomorrow's meeting.
Rina perlu beristirahat setelah perjalanan panjang.
Rina needs to rest after the long journey.
Data ini perlu diperiksa sekali lagi.
These data need to be checked once more.
The need may come from a goal, health condition, missing step, or practical circumstance. Compared with harus, perlu often foregrounds instrumental necessity: the action is needed in order to achieve something.
Untuk mengurangi kesalahan, kita perlu memeriksa setiap angka.
To reduce errors, we need to check every number.
Menurut aturan, kita harus memeriksa setiap angka.
Under the rules, we must check every number.
The first gives a practical reason; the second cites an obligation. Real contexts can support either, but the viewpoint differs.
Perlu with a noun
Perlu can predicate a need for a thing without English have.
Saya perlu bantuan untuk memindahkan meja ini.
I need help moving this table.
Perlu bantuan?
Need help? (conversational; subject omitted)
Kami perlu informasi tambahan sebelum mengambil keputusan.
We need additional information before making a decision.
Anak itu perlu perhatian khusus selama masa pemulihan.
That child needs special attention during recovery.
Apakah Anda perlu kuitansi?
Do you need a receipt?
The noun immediately after perlu names what is needed. Do not insert punya merely because English says have a need or another source language uses a possession construction.
Saya punya waktu, tetapi saya tidak perlu bantuan.
I have time, but I do not need help.
Here punya expresses actual possession of time, while perlu evaluates whether help is needed.
Impersonal necessity
Indonesian can present an entire situation as necessary without naming a person who needs it.
Perlu ada ruang tunggu yang lebih luas.
There needs to be a larger waiting room.
Perlu dilakukan pemeriksaan ulang sebelum hasil diumumkan.
A reexamination needs to be conducted before the results are announced. (formal)
Untuk saat ini, belum perlu ada perubahan jadwal.
For now, there is no need for a schedule change yet.
Apa perlu kita mengundang semua kepala bagian?
Do we need to invite all the department heads? (conversational)
Initial perlu evaluates the following proposition as needed. The understood evaluator may be a group, institution, or speaker; Indonesian does not require a dummy subject equivalent to English it.
Questions and short answers
Apakah saya perlu membawa paspor asli?
Do I need to bring the original passport?
Perlu datang lebih awal?
Do I need to arrive early? (conversational)
Berapa lama kami perlu menunggu?
How long do we need to wait?
Siapa yang perlu menerima salinan laporan ini?
Who needs to receive a copy of this report?
Ya, perlu. Petugas harus melihat dokumen aslinya.
Yes, you do. The officer must see the original document.
Tidak, tidak perlu. Salinan digital sudah cukup.
No, there is no need. A digital copy is sufficient.
The standalone answers recover their complement from the question. Tidak perlu removes necessity; it does not forbid the action.
Tidak perlu: no need
Tidak perlu khawatir.
There is no need to worry.
Kamu tidak perlu menunggu saya; rapatmu lebih penting.
You do not need to wait for me; your meeting is more important.
Formulir ini tidak perlu dicetak.
This form does not need to be printed.
Kami tidak perlu kamar tambahan karena dua tamu batal datang.
We do not need an additional room because two guests canceled.
The action remains allowed unless another rule bans it. Compare:
Kamu tidak perlu membawa makanan karena makan siang disediakan.
You do not need to bring food because lunch is provided.
Kamu tidak boleh membawa makanan ke dalam laboratorium.
You must not bring food into the laboratory.
English needn't and mustn't are easy to confuse. Indonesian makes the distinction with tidak perlu versus tidak boleh.
Perlu untuk
Two structures containing untuk must be distinguished.
Modal perlu plus verb: usually no untuk
When the same subject needs to perform an action, perlu + verb is concise and natural.
Kita perlu memeriksa alamatnya.
We need to check the address.
Kita perlu untuk memeriksa alamatnya occurs, especially in bureaucratic or speech-influenced prose, but untuk adds no necessary relationship here and polished writing usually omits it.
Predicate perlu plus purpose phrase
When untuk introduces the purpose for which a thing or measure is necessary, it contributes real structure.
Latihan ringan perlu untuk menjaga kelenturan otot.
Light exercise is necessary to maintain muscle flexibility.
Dana cadangan perlu untuk menghadapi pengeluaran tak terduga.
Reserve funds are necessary for dealing with unexpected expenses.
Ruang terpisah perlu untuk menyimpan bahan yang mudah terbakar.
A separate room is needed for storing flammable materials.
Here the subject is the needed measure or resource, while untuk states its purpose.
Memerlukan: a transitive lexical verb
Memerlukan means “require/need” and directly selects the needed thing as its object. The meN-...-kan morphology belongs to the verb and remains attached.
Pekerjaan ini memerlukan waktu.
This work requires time.
Pasien itu memerlukan perawatan lebih lanjut.
The patient requires further treatment.
Proyek tersebut memerlukan dana sekitar dua miliar rupiah.
The project requires approximately two billion rupiah. (formal)
Mempelajari bahasa baru memerlukan kesabaran dan latihan rutin.
Learning a new language requires patience and regular practice.
The needed object can become the center of an impersonal passive expression:
Waktu tambahan diperlukan untuk menyelesaikan pengujian.
Additional time is required to complete the testing. (formal)
Compare Pekerjaan ini perlu waktu and Pekerjaan ini memerlukan waktu. Both occur, but memerlukan makes the transitive relation explicit and suits formal prose. This page distinguishes the patterns without analyzing their voice morphology.
Perlu, butuh, and harus
Butuh is a common lexical alternative meaning “need,” especially in speech; membutuhkan is its transitive derived form. Perlu is neutral across speech and writing and also works easily as an impersonal necessity marker.
Aku butuh waktu sebentar untuk berpikir.
I need a little time to think. (informal)
Kami perlu waktu tambahan untuk memeriksa datanya.
We need additional time to check the data. (neutral)
Kami harus menyerahkan hasilnya hari ini.
We must submit the results today.
These are not interchangeable by strength alone: the first two name a needed resource, while harus imposes a deadline obligation.
Common Mistakes
1. Adding punya as a helper for need
❌ Saya punya perlu bantuan untuk membawa kotak ini.
Incorrect—punya is not an auxiliary used before perlu.
✅ Saya perlu bantuan untuk membawa kotak ini.
I need help carrying this box.
2. Using harus for every English need
❌ Tanaman ini harus air lebih banyak.
Incorrect structure—air is a needed noun, not an action required by harus.
✅ Tanaman ini perlu lebih banyak air.
This plant needs more water.
3. Reading tidak perlu as prohibition
❌ Kamu tidak perlu memakai jas berarti memakai jas dilarang.
Incorrect interpretation—tidak perlu removes necessity.
✅ Kamu tidak perlu memakai jas, tetapi boleh memakainya.
You do not need to wear a suit, but you may wear one.
4. Joining perlu to the verb
❌ Kita perlumembahas masalah ini hari ini.
Incorrect spelling—perlu remains a separate word before the verb.
✅ Kita perlu membahas masalah ini hari ini.
We need to discuss this problem today.
5. Adding unnecessary untuk after modal perlu
❌ Dalam kalimat ringkas ini, kita perlu untuk memeriksa alamatnya.
Wordy bureaucratic structure—untuk contributes no needed relation between the same subject and action.
✅ Dalam kalimat ringkas ini, kita perlu memeriksa alamatnya.
In this concise sentence, we need to check the address.
