Action Complements with untuk

Untuk links an action to a prospective endpoint: why someone acts, what a plan contains, or which action is difficult, possible, or intended. English often translates it with an infinitive, but Indonesian verbs have no infinitive form. Untuk is not a universal infinitive marker.

The same forward-looking relation connects purpose, intended action, and evaluation. The main analytic task is to identify who performs the untuk action. This page leaves basic word-order drills, individual affix formation, and pragmatic particle meanings to other guides.

Purpose: one actor, two linked actions

In the clearest purpose construction, the matrix subject also controls the understood subject of the untuk clause.

Rina datang untuk belajar bersama kelompok kami.

Rina came to study with our group.

Saya menelepon layanan pelanggan untuk memastikan alamat pengiriman paket.

I called customer service to confirm the package's delivery address.

Kami berhenti sebentar untuk membeli air minum.

We stopped briefly to buy drinking water.

Dodi menabung setiap bulan untuk memperbaiki rumah orang tuanya.

Dodi saves every month to repair his parents' house.

In each example, the main subject performs both actions: Rina comes and studies; I call and confirm; we stop and buy; Dodi saves and repairs. Indonesian does not repeat the actor because control makes it recoverable.

The required model Datang untuk belajar captures the structure, but a full clause reveals the controller.

💡
For a purpose clause, ask “Who is meant to do the second action?” If the natural answer is the matrix subject, bare untuk + verb phrase is usually clear.

Bare serialization versus explicit purpose

After a motion verb, Indonesian may use bare adjacency or untuk.

Maya pergi mencari obat di apotek yang buka semalam suntuk.

Maya went to look for medicine at a pharmacy open all night.

Maya pergi ke apotek untuk mencari obat batuk anak.

Maya went to the pharmacy to look for children's cough medicine.

Bare pergi mencari packages movement and search as one errand. Pergi ke apotek untuk mencari first establishes a destination and then explicitly states its purpose. The choice is not a tense or finiteness contrast.

After phase predicates such as mulai and berhenti, direct combination is normal; adding untuk is generally not.

Para teknisi mulai memeriksa kabel setelah listrik dimatikan.

The technicians began checking the cables after the power was switched off.

Paman berhenti merokok sejak awal tahun ini.

Uncle stopped smoking at the beginning of this year.

Likewise, modals and desideratives usually take the predicate directly: ingin pergi, bisa datang, harus bekerja. English uses an infinitive after want and sometimes to in equivalent structures, but Indonesian does not insert untuk automatically.

Predicates that select or favor untuk

Planning, decision, opportunity, and effort predicates can introduce an intended action with untuk. With several common items, the marker is optional, and its presence makes the prospective relation more explicit.

Kami berencana untuk pindah ke kantor yang lebih kecil tahun depan.

We plan to move to a smaller office next year.

Kami berencana pindah setelah masa sewa gedung ini berakhir.

We plan to move after this building's lease ends.

Rapat memutuskan untuk menunda pemilihan sampai bulan depan.

The meeting decided to postpone the election until next month. (formal)

Dia mencoba untuk menghubungi petugas melalui nomor darurat.

He or she tried to contact the officer through the emergency number.

Dia mencoba menghubungi petugas dari telepon kantor.

He or she tried contacting the officer from the office phone.

With berencana and mencoba, both orders shown are available. Explicit untuk can sound more deliberate or formal; omission gives a tighter predicate sequence. With memutuskan, untuk is particularly common in careful prose.

There is no completely mechanical list. Lexical selection is real: learn frequent predicate–complement pairings rather than assuming every Indonesian verb accepts both variants.

Evaluation: sulit untuk dijelaskan

Adjectives and evaluative predicates can take an untuk action that specifies what is difficult, important, safe, or useful.

Perubahan mendadak itu sulit untuk dijelaskan tanpa data tambahan.

That sudden change is difficult to explain without additional data.

Petunjuk ini mudah dipahami oleh pengguna baru.

These instructions are easy for new users to understand.

Penting untuk memeriksa tanggal kedaluwarsa sebelum membeli obat.

It is important to check the expiration date before buying medicine.

Jalur tersebut aman untuk dilalui pada siang hari.

That route is safe to travel during the day.

The required sulit untuk dijelaskan contains a passive di- verb because the evaluated thing is what receives the explaining. The prefix attaches: dijelaskan. In penting untuk memeriksa, the generic actor is whoever follows the advice.

Untuk may be omitted in some high-frequency adjective patterns—mudah dipahami, sulit dijelaskan—because the evaluation–action relation is already conventional.

Masalah ini sulit dijelaskan melalui pesan singkat.

This problem is difficult to explain in a short message.

Aplikasi baru itu cukup mudah untuk digunakan tanpa pelatihan.

The new application is fairly easy to use without training.

The variation is partly lexical and stylistic. Neither form is an infinitive conjugation.

Nominal complements: plans, decisions, and opportunities

A noun can be followed by untuk + action when the action supplies its intended content or use.

Keputusan untuk pergi lebih awal mengejutkan anggota tim lainnya.

The decision to leave early surprised the other team members.

Rencana untuk membangun jembatan baru masih menunggu persetujuan.

The plan to build a new bridge is still awaiting approval.

Kami mendapat kesempatan untuk berbicara langsung dengan direktur.

We got an opportunity to speak directly with the director.

Keinginannya untuk pulang semakin kuat setelah menerima surat itu.

His or her desire to go home grew stronger after receiving that letter.

Ada ruang khusus untuk menyimpan peralatan yang mudah rusak.

There is a special room for storing fragile equipment.

The required keputusan untuk pergi specifies the decision's content. Ruang untuk menyimpan instead specifies intended use. Both are prospective: a decision points to a contemplated action, and a room points to its designed function.

Do not place a comma between the noun and its restrictive untuk complement.

Control with objects and experiencers

The matrix subject is not always the controller. Some predicates introduce another participant who is understood as the actor of the following action.

Guru meminta para siswa untuk mengumpulkan tugas sebelum Jumat.

The teacher asked the students to submit their assignments before Friday.

Dokter menyarankan saya untuk beristirahat selama beberapa hari.

The doctor advised me to rest for several days.

Panitia memberi peserta waktu sepuluh menit untuk membaca petunjuk.

The committee gave participants ten minutes to read the instructions.

In these examples, para siswa, saya, and peserta are the participants associated with the embedded action. The syntax of individual control predicates varies; the control guide treats those argument patterns in depth.

When there is no selecting predicate to establish a different actor, untuk + bare verb normally falls back to the matrix subject or a generic actor.

When an explicit different subject needs agar or supaya

An intended result with its own subject is more clearly expressed as a proposition introduced by agar or supaya.

Saya membuka pintu agar para tamu dapat masuk.

I opened the door so that the guests could enter.

Kami berbicara pelan supaya bayi itu tidak terbangun.

We spoke quietly so that the baby would not wake up.

The matrix actors are saya/kami; the desired-outcome actors are para tamu/bayi itu. A bare sequence such as Saya membuka pintu untuk para tamu masuk occurs, but it can momentarily parse untuk para tamu as a beneficiary phrase. Agar/supaya removes that ambiguity by opening a full desired proposition.

💡
Use untuk for a controlled or nominally intended action. Use agar/supaya when a distinct subject and a wished-for result need their own clause.

Negation and marker placement

Negation inside the untuk complement precedes its predicate.

Saya mencatat nomor itu untuk tidak melupakannya lagi.

I wrote the number down so as not to forget it again.

Mereka memilih untuk tidak menanggapi komentar tersebut.

They chose not to respond to that comment.

The first has same-subject purpose; the second makes nonresponse the content of a choice. Tidak untuk + verb can instead negate suitability or purpose in a contrastive frame, so keep tidak beside the predicate whose realization is denied.

Ruangan ini bukan untuk menyimpan bahan yang mudah terbakar.

This room is not for storing flammable materials.

Here bukan rejects the room's intended function as a nominal classification.

Common Mistakes

1. Treating untuk as obligatory before every second verb

❌ Saya ingin untuk pulang sebelum malam.

Incorrect neutral complement — ingin takes the desired action directly.

✅ Saya ingin pulang sebelum jalanan menjadi sepi.

I want to go home before the roads become quiet.

2. Adding untuk after a phase predicate

❌ Mereka mulai untuk membersihkan gudang setelah sarapan.

Incorrect — mulai combines directly with the following activity.

✅ Mereka mulai membersihkan gudang setelah sarapan bersama.

They began cleaning the storeroom after breakfast together.

3. Leaving a changed actor unclear

❌ Saya menyalakan lampu untuk tamu melihat tangga.

Ambiguous and awkward — untuk tamu can look like a beneficiary phrase.

✅ Saya menyalakan lampu agar para tamu dapat melihat tangga.

I turned on the light so that the guests could see the stairs.

4. Separating a passive prefix after untuk

❌ Penjelasan ini sulit untuk di pahami pembaca baru.

Incorrect spelling — passive di- attaches to pahami.

✅ Penjelasan ini sulit untuk dipahami pembaca baru.

This explanation is difficult for new readers to understand.

5. Inserting a comma before a restrictive complement

❌ Kesempatan, untuk bertemu narasumber sangat terbatas.

Incorrect punctuation — the untuk phrase specifies which opportunity.

✅ Kesempatan untuk bertemu narasumber sangat terbatas tahun ini.

The opportunity to meet the interviewees is very limited this year.

Key Takeaways

  • Untuk connects an action to a prospective purpose, evaluation, plan, decision, opportunity, or use.
  • A purpose clause usually shares its actor with the matrix subject unless a selecting predicate establishes another controller.
  • Some planning and effort predicates allow optional untuk; phase predicates and modals normally do not.
  • Nouns can select untuk complements: keputusan untuk pergi, kesempatan untuk berbicara.
  • Use agar/supaya to make a distinct desired-outcome subject unambiguous.
