The beli family distinguishes an ordinary purchase from a purchase made for someone else. Membeli selects the item bought, while benefactive membelikan adds and can structurally promote the beneficiary. Pembeli names the buyer and pembelian names a purchase or purchasing process. English often expresses the beneficiary with for; Indonesian can encode it in the verb itself.
No person or tense endings
None of these forms changes for person, number, or tense. Separate time and aspect words locate the transaction.
| Function | Form | Typical structure |
|---|---|---|
| Instruction/object voice | beli | beli barang; barang yang saya beli |
| Actor voice | membeli | buyer + membeli + item |
| Passive | dibeli | item + dibeli |
| Benefactive actor voice | membelikan | buyer + membelikan + beneficiary + item |
| Person noun | pembeli | buyer |
| Event noun | pembelian | purchase, purchasing |
Saya membeli buku resep di toko dekat pasar.
I bought a cookbook at the shop near the market.
Kemarin Raka membeli sepatu untuk wawancara kerja.
Yesterday Raka bought shoes for a job interview.
Bulan depan kami akan membeli komputer untuk ruang kelas.
Next month we will buy a computer for the classroom.
English buy, bought, and will buy correspond to the same Indonesian membeli plus context. The form membeli is spelled with mem-; the b remains.
Bare beli: instructions and object voice
Bare beli is natural in commands and after a definite first- or second-person agent in object voice. It is not an infinitive that automatically follows another verb.
Beli beras secukupnya sebelum toko tutup.
Buy enough rice before the shop closes.
Tolong beli dua baterai ukuran kecil.
Please buy two small batteries.
Kemeja ini saya beli saat ada potongan harga.
I bought this shirt when there was a discount.
Mana buah yang kamu beli untuk acara besok?
Which fruit did you buy for tomorrow's event?
The fronted item is central in kemeja ini saya beli. In an actor-oriented clause, standard careful Indonesian uses saya membeli kemeja ini. Actor-first saya beli is common (informal) speech, but that does not make beli a tense-neutral infinitive.
Membeli: select the item purchased
Membeli is transitive. Its subject is the buyer, and the next noun phrase is normally the goods, service, right, or asset acquired in exchange for money.
Ibu membeli sayuran langsung dari petani setiap Sabtu.
Mother buys vegetables directly from farmers every Saturday.
Perusahaan itu membeli lisensi perangkat lunak untuk lima puluh pengguna.
The company bought a software license for fifty users.
Kami membeli tiket kereta melalui aplikasi resmi.
We bought train tickets through the official application.
The seller can be expressed with dari, the place with di, and the price with seharga or a price expression. Indonesian does not normally use an equivalent of English for before the item sought.
Dina membeli kamera bekas dari tetangganya seharga dua juta rupiah.
Dina bought a used camera from her neighbor for two million rupiah.
Mereka membeli rumah itu dengan sistem pembayaran bertahap.
They bought that house through an installment payment system.
Several combinations are partly lexicalized. Membeli waktu means gain or buy time, and membeli suara means buy votes, normally with a negative political sense.
Pertanyaan tambahan itu hanya untuk membeli waktu sebelum bantuan datang.
That additional question was only meant to buy time before help arrived.
Laporan tersebut menuduh calon itu mencoba membeli suara.
The report accused that candidate of trying to buy votes.
These extensions do not mean that every English expression with buy maps directly to membeli.
Dibeli: make the item the passive subject
Dibeli presents the purchased item as subject or topic. The buyer can follow with oleh, occur directly in some structures, or remain omitted.
Buku itu dibeli oleh perpustakaan untuk koleksi anak.
The book was bought by the library for the children's collection.
Semua tiket sudah dibeli sebelum jadwal tambahan diumumkan.
All the tickets had been bought before the additional schedule was announced.
Kopi ini dibeli langsung dari koperasi desa.
This coffee is bought directly from the village cooperative.
Tanah tersebut dibeli pemerintah untuk membangun waduk.
The government bought the land to build a reservoir.
In the last example, a short third-person institutional agent follows directly. Passive di- is written solid in dibeli; locative di remains separate in di pasar.
Membelikan: buy something for someone
Membelikan adds a beneficiaryβthe person for whom the purchase is made. A characteristic double-object frame places the beneficiary immediately after the verb and the purchased item after the beneficiary:
buyer + membelikan + beneficiary + item
Ayah membelikan anak itu buku cerita bergambar.
Dad bought that child an illustrated storybook.
Kami membelikan Nenek selimut yang lebih hangat.
We bought Grandma a warmer blanket.
Tia membelikan adiknya sepatu untuk pertandingan besok.
Tia bought her younger sibling shoes for tomorrow's match.
The beneficiary is structurally promoted: it occupies the position directly after membelikan. This is the central grammatical contribution of benefactive -kan, not merely a more formal synonym of membeli.
Another clear pattern places the item directly after the verb and expresses the beneficiary with untuk.
Saya membelikan obat batuk untuk Pak Hasan.
I bought cough medicine for Mr. Hasan.
Panitia membelikan tiket pulang untuk dua relawan dari luar kota.
The committee bought return tickets for two volunteers from out of town.
Plain membeli buku untuk anak also describes buying a book intended for a child. Membelikan explicitly profiles the action as a service or benefit to that person; the practical difference can be subtle when untuk is already present.
Lina membeli payung untuk perjalanan ke Bogor.
Lina bought an umbrella for the trip to Bogor.
Lina membelikan temannya payung karena hujan belum reda.
Lina bought her friend an umbrella because the rain had not stopped.
Dibelikan: two useful perspectives
The benefactive construction supports a beneficiary-centered passive, in which the person appears as subject and the item remains after dibelikan.
Anak itu dibelikan buku cerita oleh bibinya.
That child was bought a storybook by her aunt.
Saya dibelikan tiket konser sebagai hadiah ulang tahun.
Someone bought me a concert ticket as a birthday gift.
The purchased item can instead be central, with the beneficiary expressed in an untuk phrase.
Sepeda baru itu dibelikan untuk kurir yang paling lama bekerja.
That new bicycle was bought for the longest-serving courier.
Seragam tambahan sudah dibelikan untuk seluruh anggota baru.
Additional uniforms have been bought for all new members.
The wider -kan argument guide explains why the beneficiary can become structurally prominent.
Pembeli: buyer, customer, or purchaser
Pembeli names the participant who buys. In commercial contexts, it can be translated as buyer, purchaser, or customer depending on the transaction.
Pembeli pertama mendapat potongan harga sepuluh persen.
The first buyer receives a ten-percent discount.
Penjual wajib memberi informasi yang benar kepada pembeli.
Sellers must provide accurate information to buyers.
Calon pembeli meminta waktu untuk memeriksa kondisi rumah.
The prospective buyer asked for time to inspect the condition of the house.
Daya beli is a fixed economic term meaning purchasing power.
Kenaikan harga pangan menekan daya beli keluarga berpenghasilan rendah.
Rising food prices reduce the purchasing power of low-income families.
Pembelian: a purchase or purchasing process
Pembelian profiles the transaction or process rather than the buyer. It is especially frequent in administration, accounting, online commerce, and formal policy.
Bukti pembelian diperlukan untuk mengajukan pengembalian dana.
Proof of purchase is required to request a refund.
Pembelian tiket secara daring ditutup satu jam sebelum keberangkatan.
Online ticket purchases close one hour before departure.
Bagian keuangan harus menyetujui pembelian peralatan bernilai besar.
The finance department must approve purchases of high-value equipment.
Aplikasi mencatat tanggal pembelian dan masa garansi produk.
The application records the purchase date and the product's warranty period.
Pembeli and pembelian are predictable in broad role, but their exact English gloss follows the institution: a person versus the purchase event, record, or procedure.
