válik: Complete Conjugation and Usage

Válik means “become” or “separate,” while prefixed elválik can mean “get divorced” and kiválik can mean “separate from” or “stand out.” The central becoming frame is valami valamivé válik: the resulting identity or quality takes translative -vá/-vé. The verb is intransitive, so even a definite-looking result phrase never triggers a definite conjugation.

Principal parts and the pseudo-ik pattern

The stem vowel is long á throughout. Present third-person singular has -ik, but the first-person form is válok, not válom. This pattern is often called pseudo--ik because the -ik does not extend through the paradigm like the traditional endings of verbs such as alszik.

There is no definite-object table because válik is intransitive. Present váltok “you all become/separate” happens to look like first-person singular váltok of transitive vált “switch/exchange”; context and the dictionary form distinguish the two verbs.

By the end of the long rehearsal, I’m becoming increasingly confident.

Néhány év alatt teljesen megváltoztak a terveink, és más emberekké váltunk.

Do not create a definite form from the result phrase. In a terv valósággá válik, “the plan” is the subject and valósággá is a translative result—not a definite object.

Becoming something: -vá/-vé

The productive frame is subject + result in -vá/-vé + válik. The suffix harmonizes and assimilates to a final consonant: orvossá “into a doctor,” könnyebbé “easier,” üggyé “into an issue,” but tanárrá “into a teacher.” This is the same translative morphology used outside this verb.

A régi pályaudvar néhány év alatt kulturális központtá vált.

Within a few years, the old railway station became a cultural center.

A source or developmental starting point can take -ból/-ből. In this frame the outcome may be a nominative predicate instead of an explicit translative form.

This pattern literally presents the resulting person as emerging “from” the source. It is common in evaluations and biographies (formal).

It will get cold by evening, so take a coat.

A digitális hozzáférés lassan alapvető szolgáltatássá válik.

In the spring, their old dream finally came true, and they opened their own bakery.

Elválik: separation and divorce

Elválik valakitől/valamitől marks separation from a person or thing with ablative -tól/-től. In the marriage meaning, it means “get divorced.” The spouse is not an accusative object.

A szüleim békésen elváltak, amikor tizenkét éves voltam.

My parents divorced amicably when I was twelve.

In the end, Anna did not divorce her husband.

Mikor vált el egymástól a két szervezeti egység?

When did the two organizational units separate from each other?

Kiválik valamiből uses elative -ból/-ből for the group, mixture, or background from which something separates. With a visual background it often means “stand out.”

Two founding members left the association last year.

Miért vált ki a kutatócsoport az intézetből?

Why did the research group split off from the institute?

Other established expressions
