Talál most often means “find,” but it also supports result predicates—“find something useful/open”—and a marked infinitival construction meaning “happen to do.” Its object can be indefinite or definite, while prefixed rátalál unexpectedly assigns sublative -ra/-re to the discovered target instead of accusative -t.
Principal parts

A piacon találtam egy műhelyt, ahol régi lámpákat javítanak.
At the market I found a workshop where they repair old lamps.
Indefinite egy műhelyt selects találtam from the indefinite paradigm, although first-person past looks identical in both paradigms.

Nem találom a belépőkártyámat, pedig reggel még nálam volt.
I can’t find my access card, although I still had it this morning.
Hol találtátok ezt a gyönyörű régi térképet?
Where did you find this beautiful old map?
Possessed a belépőkártyámat and demonstrative ezt a … térképet are definite, so they select találom and találtátok. A question word object behaves differently: Mit találtatok? uses indefinite találtatok.
Finding, encountering, and locating
Bare talál can describe discovery by chance or successful location. Context decides whether the process involved a search.
A kabát zsebében találtunk két régi mozijegyet.
We found two old cinema tickets in the coat pocket.
A mentők sértetlenül találták meg az eltévedt túrázót.
The rescue workers found the lost hiker unharmed.
Keres profiles looking; talál presents the result. Therefore kerestem, de nem találtam is coherent, while English learners who use keres for both lose the success contrast. Megtalál often foregrounds reaching the intended result, especially recovering a known item or person. Bare talál remains common with a newly encountered indefinite entity.
That distribution is a tendency, not an absolute aspect equation. Speakers can say találtam a fiókban about a definite thing when the context supports it, and megtaláltam egy jó megoldást when the successful outcome matters.
Abstract things that can be found
The object of talál need not be physical. Common collocations include időt talál valamire “find time for something,” alkalmat talál valamire “find an opportunity for something,” szavakat talál “find words,” and helyet talál valaminek “find room for something.” The thing obtained is accusative; the activity or beneficiary commonly receives another case.
Remélem, a héten találsz időt a részletes beszámolóra.
I hope you find time for the detailed report this week.
Végül a nagy lábasnak is találtunk helyet az alsó szekrényben.
In the end, we found room for the large pot in the lower cupboard too.
The productive frame módot talál valamire or módot talál arra, hogy… means “find a way to do something.” Here módot is the indefinite object and therefore selects the indefinite conjugation.
Találtunk rá módot, hogy a bolt nyitva maradjon a felújítás alatt.
We found a way for the shop to remain open during the renovation.
English often chooses manage to, make time, or come up with a way where Hungarian keeps talál. Learn these as ordinary collocations rather than forcing every occurrence into the concrete meaning “locate.”
Található: formal location statements
The potential derivative található means “can be found; is located.” It is frequent on websites, maps, notices, and institutional pages (formal). It presents availability or location without naming a finder.
A részletes árlista a honlap alján található.
The detailed price list can be found at the bottom of the website.
Az elsősegélydoboz a recepció mögötti szekrényben található.
The first-aid kit is located in the cupboard behind reception.
In everyday conversation, simple van is often lighter: Az elsősegélydoboz a szekrényben van. Do not imitate bureaucratic English by using található in every location sentence.
Result predicates: how something is found
Talál can combine with an object and a predicate describing the speaker’s assessment or the state encountered. An evaluative noun or adjective commonly takes -nak/-nek: jónak talál valamit “find something good.” A state such as nyitva may appear as an adverbial predicate.
A bizottság megvalósíthatónak találta az átdolgozott tervet.
The committee found the revised plan feasible.
Túl magasnak találom a szállítási díjat.
I find the delivery charge too high.
Reggel nyitva találtuk a raktár hátsó ajtaját.
In the morning, we found the warehouse’s back door open.
English uses an unmarked adjective after find. Hungarian magasnak/megvalósíthatónak explicitly marks the assessed role. The object remains accusative and controls definite conjugation.
Találó has lexicalized as “apt, well chosen”:
A szerkesztő nagyon találó címet adott a cikknek.
The editor gave the article a very apt title.
Rátalál: a target in -ra/-re
Rátalál valamire/valakire means come across, find one’s way to, or discover. Its target is sublative, not accusative, and therefore does not trigger definite conjugation—even when the noun phrase contains a.
A levéltárban rátaláltam a dédapám egyik levelére.
In the archive I came across one of my great-grandfather’s letters.
A keresőcsapat alkonyat előtt rátalált az eltűnt kutyára.
The search party found the missing dog before dusk.
Both use indefinite-looking rátaláltam/rátalált, because levelére/kutyára are case-marked targets, not direct objects. This is exactly where English transitivity misleads.
Negation and focus separate rá:
A sűrű ködben nem találtunk rá a jelzett ösvényre.
In the thick fog, we did not manage to find the marked trail.
Melyik adatbázisban találtál rá erre a tanulmányra?
In which database did you come across this study?
The focused location precedes the verb, while rá follows it. Compare neutral Rátaláltam a tanulmányra. See the prefix-order guide.
Kitalál and feltalál
Kitalál means figure out, devise, invent a story, or guess correctly. Feltalál means invent a device or method and is also present in feltalálja magát “cope resourcefully.” Both are transitive in their central senses.
Végül kitaláltuk, hogyan fér el minden doboz a polcon.
We finally figured out how all the boxes would fit on the shelf.
A mérnökcsapat energiatakarékos hűtőrendszert talált fel.
The engineering team invented an energy-efficient cooling system.
In the second example, indefinite hűtőrendszert selects talált, while focus on that object separates fel. Neutral order would be feltalált egy energiatakarékos hűtőrendszert.
Infinitival talál: “happen to”
Hungarian has a limited auxiliary-like talál + infinitive construction meaning that an action happens unexpectedly or by chance. It is most visible in conditionals, warnings, and older narrative style (literary).
Ha erre találnál járni, ugorj be hozzánk egy kávéra.
If you happened to come this way, drop in for coffee.
El ne találj késni a saját előadásodról!
Don’t you happen to be late for your own presentation!
Mit talált mondani, amikor meglátta a számlát?
What did he happen to say when he saw the bill?
The construction is genuine, but it is not the ordinary way to say “perhaps.” In neutral contemporary conversation, ha esetleg erre járnál and vajon mit mondott? are usually less marked. Do not replace every English happen to with talál.
Infinitive and participles
Personal infinitive forms are találnom, találnod, találnia, találnunk, találnotok, találniuk.
Gyorsan kell találnunk egy fedett helyet, mert mindjárt leszakad az ég.
We need to find shelter quickly because it’s about to pour.
| Form | Typical use | Register |
|---|---|---|
| találni | megoldást találni “find a solution” | unmarked |
| találó | találó megfogalmazás “apt wording” | unmarked, often lexicalized |
| talált | az utcán talált pénztárca “wallet found in the street” | unmarked |
| találva | kevés hibát találva “finding few errors” | mainly (formal) |
| találandó | rare future-participial “to be found” | (archaic); use megtalálandó only in deliberately elevated prose |
