Száll has no single dependable English gloss. Unprefixed, it can mean “fly,” “drift,” or “settle”; felszáll means “board,” “take off,” or “rise”; leszáll means “get off,” “land,” or “descend”; and megszáll means either “stay overnight” or, transitively, “occupy.” Prefix, complement case, and object agreement jointly identify the intended event.
The written ll is essential in every form: száll, szállt, szálljon. Szál with one l is a noun meaning “thread/strand,” not a form of this verb. The general system behind destination and source cases is surveyed under motion expressions.
Principal parts
| Infinitive | Present 3sg | Past 3sg | Imperative 2sg | Conditional 3sg | Present participle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| szállni | száll | szállt | szállj; szálld | szállna | szálló |
The long consonant remains before endings: szállnak, szálltam, szállnánk. Imperative -j creates szállj, while short definite second-person szálld is the stem plus -d. Definite forms are relevant mainly to transitive megszáll “occupy/overwhelm,” not to boarding a vehicle.
A sirályok sokáig alacsonyan szálltak a kikötő fölött.
The seagulls flew low over the harbor for a long time.
Present: intransitive motion and transitive occupation
| Person | Indefinite | Definite |
|---|---|---|
| én | szállok | szállom |
| te | szállsz | szállod |
| ő / ön | száll | szállja |
| mi | szállunk | szálljuk |
| ti | szálltok | szálljátok |
| ők / önök | szállnak | szállják |
Vehicle constructions are intransitive: felszállok a vonatra, not a definite verb agreeing with a vonatra. That noun is in the sublative case and expresses a goal, not a direct object. By contrast, military or figurative megszáll valamit takes an accusative object and therefore permits both agreement series.
A következő megállónál sok diák száll fel a buszra.
A lot of students board the bus at the next stop.
A megszálló hadsereg ellenőrzi a főutakat, de még nem szállta meg az egész térséget.
The occupying army controls the main roads but has not yet occupied the entire region.
Past and conditional
| Person | Past indefinite | Past definite | Conditional indefinite | Conditional definite |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| én | szálltam | szálltam | szállnék | szállnám |
| te | szálltál | szálltad | szállnál | szállnád |
| ő / ön | szállt | szállta | szállna | szállná |
| mi | szálltunk | szálltuk | szállnánk | szállnánk |
| ti | szálltatok | szálltátok | szállnátok | szállnátok |
| ők / önök | szálltak | szállták | szállnának | szállnák |
A turisták rossz megállónál szálltak le, ezért húsz percet kellett gyalogolniuk.
The tourists got off at the wrong stop, so they had to walk for twenty minutes.
A gép erős oldalszélben szállt le a kifutópályára.
The plane landed on the runway in a strong crosswind.
Egy éjszakára szívesen megszállnánk abban a hegyi panzióban.
We would gladly stay for one night at that mountain guesthouse.
A parancsnok nem szállná meg a kikötőt megfelelő utánpótlás nélkül.
The commander would not occupy the port without adequate supplies.
The analytic future places agreement on fog: fel fogok szállni a villamosra, but transitive meg fogják szállni a kikötőt.
Imperative–subjunctive
| Person | Indefinite | Definite |
|---|---|---|
| én | szálljak | szálljam |
| te | szállj / szálljál | szálld / szálljad |
| ő / ön | szálljon | szállja |
| mi | szálljunk | szálljuk |
| ti | szálljatok | szálljátok |
| ők / önök | szálljanak | szállják |
Long szálljál/szálljad is (informal) and often adds insistence. In everyday directions, the intransitive form with a separated prefix is common because imperative focus occupies the preverbal position.
Szállj le a második megállónál, és várj meg a pékség előtt!
Get off at the second stop and wait for me in front of the bakery! (informal)
Szálljatok át a négyes metróra a Kálvin téren!
Change to metro line four at Kálvin tér! (informal)
Az irányító engedélyt adott, hogy a gép leszálljon.
The controller gave permission for the plane to land.
A hadvezér azt követelte, hogy hajnalban szállják meg az erődöt.
The commander demanded that they occupy the fortress at dawn.
Infinitive and participles
The infinitive is szállni. Personal forms are szállnom, szállnod, szállnia, szállnunk, szállnotok, szállniuk.
Két megálló múlva kell átszállnom egy másik buszra.
In two stops I have to change to another bus.
| Form | Function | Typical example |
|---|---|---|
| szálló | flying, drifting, settling | szálló por |
| szállt | having flown/settled | a földre szállt köd |
| szállandó | to fly or settle | leszállandó egység (rare/formal) |
| szállva | while flying; having come upon | ihlettől megszállva |
Prefixed participles are far more frequent than bare szállt/szállandó: felszálló utas, leszálló repülőgép, megszállt város. Do not mechanically force every theoretically possible participle into ordinary conversation.
A felszálló utasokat arra kérték, hogy készítsék elő a jegyüket.
Boarding passengers were asked to have their tickets ready. (formal announcement)
Vehicle cases: board, leave, transfer
Hungarian conceptualizes public transport with surface cases. A vehicle boarded is a goal in -ra/-re; the same vehicle left is a source in -ról/-ről. Transfer uses átszáll plus the new service in -ra/-re.
| Event | Frame | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| boarding | felszáll a vonatra | gets on the train |
| leaving | leszáll a vonatról | gets off the train |
| transfer | átszáll a gyorsvonatra | changes to the express |
| entering a car | beszáll az autóba | gets into the car |
| leaving a car | kiszáll az autóból | gets out of the car |
Cars and taxis are containers, so they take -ba/-be and -ból/-ből. English uses get in/on lexically; Hungarian makes the vehicle type visible in the case ending.
A sofőr megvárta, amíg mindenki beszállt a taxiba.
The driver waited until everyone had got into the taxi.
A végállomáson az összes utas leszállt a villamosról.
At the terminus, all the passengers got off the tram.
Lodge, occupy, and other prefixed meanings
Intransitive megszáll valahol means “stay overnight/lodge,” often in travel language. It normally takes a location in -ban/-ben or -n/-on/-en/-ön. Transitive megszáll valamit means “occupy” or “take possession of,” and figuratively a feeling or idea can seize a person.
A konferencia résztvevői a pályaudvar melletti szállodában szálltak meg.
The conference participants stayed at the hotel beside the station.
Hirtelen különös nyugtalanság szállta meg a közönséget.
A strange unease suddenly came over the audience. (literary)
Other frequent prefixed meanings include elszáll “fly away; evaporate; become exorbitant,” rászáll valakire “target or keep pressuring someone” (informal), and alászáll “descend” (literary). A learner must store these as constructions, not calculate every meaning from direction alone.
A felújítás alatt teljesen elszálltak az építőanyag-árak.
Construction-material prices went through the roof during the renovation. (informal)
Prefix separation
Neutral affirmative perfective order places the prefix before the verb: felszállt, leszállt, megszállt. Negation, questions with a focused constituent, and commands commonly separate it.
Nem szállunk fel erre a zsúfolt buszra; öt perc múlva jön a következő.
We're not getting on this crowded bus; the next one comes in five minutes.
Melyik állomáson szálltatok át a helyi járatra?
At which station did you transfer to the local service?
The prefixes remain semantically part of felszáll/átszáll, even when another element occupies the preverbal focus position.
Common Mistakes
❌ Felszállok a vonatot.
Incorrect object case: boarding takes the vehicle in -ra/-re.
✅ Felszállok a vonatra.
I'm getting on the train.
❌ Leszálltunk a buszból a múzeumnál.
Incorrect case for public transport: use -ról/-ről.
✅ Leszálltunk a buszról a múzeumnál.
We got off the bus at the museum.
❌ A csapat egy olcsó panziót szállt meg.
Incorrect lodging frame: the accommodation is a location, not an object.
✅ A csapat egy olcsó panzióban szállt meg.
The team stayed at an inexpensive guesthouse.
⚠️ Holnap nem felszállunk erre a járatra.
Possible only under corrective contrast; neutral negation separates fel.
✅ Holnap nem szállunk fel erre a járatra.
Tomorrow we are not boarding this service.
Key Takeaways
- Preserve ll throughout száll – szállt – szálljon – szállni.
- Prefixes create the everyday meanings “board,” “get off,” “transfer,” “lodge,” and “occupy.”
- Transport cases form pairs: vonatra/vonatról, but autóba/autóból.
- Boarding is intransitive; transitive megszáll valamit licenses definite agreement.
- Register-label lexicalized extensions such as alászáll (literary) and rászáll valakire (informal) rather than treating them as neutral synonyms.
