repül: Complete Conjugation and Usage

Repül means “fly”: a bird, aircraft, passenger, or airborne object moves through the air. In its bare motion sense it is an intransitive rounded-front-vowel verb, so its endings contain ü/ö where vowel harmony applies: repülök, repültök, repüljön. It does not take an aircraft as a direct object in the way English fly a plane does. A prefixed form can, however, present an identified route or region as a bounded object: átrepüli az óceánt “flies across the ocean.”

To express causing flight, Hungarian uses separate transitive verbs: repít “send/hurl/carry through the air” and reptet “make or keep flying,” as in sárkányt reptet. Those causatives are required when the object is the thing made to fly. Definite forms of repül itself belong instead to bounded prefixed path uses; related spatial frames appear under motion expressions.

The stem is stable. Past -t attaches directly (repült), while the imperative inserts j (repülj). Do not drop the umlaut: repül has short ü, not short u; Hungarian distinguishes the two vowels.

A fecskék napnyugta előtt alacsonyan repülnek a mező fölött.

Before sunset, the swallows fly low over the field.

Present indicative: bare motion and bounded path objects

énrepülökrepülöm
terepülszrepülöd
ő / önrepülrepüli
mirepülünkrepüljük
tirepültökrepülitek
ők / önökrepülnekrepülik

Bare repül does not govern an accusative object: the traveler, bird, or aircraft is the subject, while destination, source, route, altitude, and means are case-marked complements. The definite column becomes usable when a prefix turns an identified path into a bounded object, as in átrepüli az Atlanti-óceánt or körberepüli a szigetet. It never means “pilots it.”

Holnap reggel Bécsből Amszterdamba repülünk.

Tomorrow morning we're flying from Vienna to Amsterdam.

A helikopter közvetlenül a kórházhoz repül.

The helicopter is flying directly to the hospital.

A költöző madarak minden évben átrepülik a Földközi-tengert.

The migratory birds fly across the Mediterranean every year.

💡
English lets fly alternate between intransitive “the plane flies” and transitive “the pilot flies the plane.” Hungarian normally does not: use repül for flight and repülőgépet vezet for piloting an aircraft.

Long second-person repüljél is (informal) and often expressive. Direct commands are natural when addressing a bird, an aircraft imaginatively, or a traveler choosing a route; subordinate uses are much more frequent in ordinary adult conversation.

Repülj óvatosan, viharos időt mondanak estére!

Fly carefully; stormy weather is forecast for this evening! (informal, to a pilot)

A diszpécser azt kérte, hogy a pilóta alacsonyabban repüljön.

The dispatcher asked the pilot to fly lower.

Az útvonalat úgy tervezték meg, hogy a gépek ne repüljenek a lakónegyed fölött.

Infinitive and participles

The infinitive is repülni. Personal forms are repülnöm, repülnöd, repülnie, repülnünk, repülnötök, repülniük. The rounded linking vowel in repülnöm/repülnöd/repülnötök follows front rounded harmony.

A műtét után egy hónapig nem szabad repülnöm.

Repülő is lexicalized as “aircraft,” but its plural and cases behave as a noun: repülők, repülővel. In a phrase such as a város fölött repülő gép, it remains a participle modifying gép.

Sources, goals, routes, and means

Hungarian packages flight as ordinary directed motion. Use elative -ból/-ből for departure, illative -ba/-be or allative -hoz/-hez/-höz for a goal, the postposition fölött for “over,” and instrumental -val/-vel for means or carrier.

RelationFrameMeaning

A kutatócsoport helikopterrel repült a nehezen megközelíthető táborhelyre.

The research team flew by helicopter to the hard-to-reach campsite.

English on a plane focuses on being aboard; Hungarian normally uses repülővel for means. Repülőn means physically “on the plane” and is appropriate when location aboard matters: A repülőn olvastam el a jelentést.

Prefixes and figurative meanings

Elrepül flies away or departs by air, berepül flies in, kirepül flies out, átrepül flies across/over, felrepül flies up, lerepül flies down or flies to a lower/southerly point, and visszarepül flies back. The prefix can be literal or conventionalized.

A nyitott ablakon berepült egy lepke.

A butterfly flew in through the open window.

A küldöttség csak vasárnap repül vissza Budapestre.

The delegation will not fly back to Budapest until Sunday.

Nem repült át a gép a lezárt légtéren.

The aircraft did not fly through the closed airspace.

Neutral affirmative order is átrepült. Negation gives nem repült át; narrow focus also separates the prefix: Csak hajnalban repül át a gép.

Bare repül also describes rapid movement or passing time. These are neutral idioms, not claims of literal flight.

Nyaralás közben mindig repül az idő.

Time always flies while you're on vacation.

Transitive repít and reptet

Use repít when a force sends something through the air or conveys somebody rapidly: a szél repíti a papírt, a járat Londonba repíti az utasokat. Use reptet for deliberately making an object fly, especially a kite or model aircraft.

A gyerekek a dombtetőn színes sárkányt reptetnek.

The children are flying a colorful kite on top of the hill.

Az erős széllökés az árokba repítette a könnyű táblát.

The strong gust hurled the lightweight sign into the ditch.

These verbs have their own object agreement: reptetem a sárkányt, repítette a táblát. They are derivationally related to repül, but they are not definite forms of it.

💡
Use a quick valency test: if the flying entity is the subject, choose repül; if an agent causes an object to become airborne, choose transitive repít or reptet and conjugate for that object.

Common Mistakes

❌ Holnap Berlinbe repülöm a gépet.

Incorrect calque of English fly a plane: repül cannot take the aircraft as its object.

✅ Holnap én vezetem a Berlinbe tartó repülőgépet.

Tomorrow I'm piloting the plane bound for Berlin.

❌ A gyerek sárkányt repül a parkban.

Incorrect causative choice: making a kite fly requires reptet.

✅ A gyerek sárkányt reptet a parkban.

The child is flying a kite in the park.

❌ Jövő héten repülünk Rómán.

Incorrect destination case: movement into a city takes -ba/-be.

✅ Jövő héten Rómába repülünk.

We're flying to Rome next week.

⚠️ A gép nem átrepült a hegyek fölött.

Possible only as corrective contrast; neutral negation separates át.

✅ A gép nem repült át a hegyek fölött.

The plane did not fly over the mountains.

Key Takeaways

  • Preserve rounded harmony in repülök, repüljön, repülnötök.
  • Bare repül is intransitive; a prefixed verb can take an identified bounded path object, as in átrepüli az óceánt.
  • Use repít for sending something flying and reptet for making something fly.
  • Directional prefixes specify the flight path and separate under neutral negation or focus.
  • Figurative repül az idő is common and neutral.
