Vezet covers two central English verbs: “drive” and “lead.” A driver autót vezet, with the vehicle as an accusative object; a person can also valakit valahová vezet, “lead somebody somewhere.” Roads, evidence, and decisions likewise “lead” to destinations or results, but the result normally takes -hoz/-hez/-höz, not an accusative object.
The stem is regular in the indicative but undergoes t + j → ss in the imperative: vezess. Because vezet is frequently transitive, both indefinite and definite conjugations are central rather than peripheral; review the underlying agreement contrast under choosing object conjugation.
Principal parts
| Infinitive | Present 3sg | Past 3sg | Imperative 2sg | Conditional 3sg | Present participle |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| vezetni | vezet | vezetett | vezess; vezesd | vezetne | vezető |
The past third-person singular is vezetett, but other past forms attach to vezett-: vezettem, vezettünk. In the imperative, write vezess, vezessen; the short definite second-person form is vezesd, not vezessd or vezetd.
Hazafelé én vezetek, mert te már nagyon fáradt vagy.
I'll drive on the way home because you're already very tired.
Present indicative and object agreement
| Person | Indefinite | Definite |
|---|---|---|
| én | vezetek | vezetem |
| te | vezetsz | vezeted |
| ő / ön | vezet | vezeti |
| mi | vezetünk | vezetjük |
| ti | vezettek | vezetitek |

An indefinite vehicle or person selects the indefinite series; an article, demonstrative, name, or other definite object selects the definite series.

My sister drives an electric car and charges it at home.
Ki vezeti ma este a bérelt kisbuszt?
Who is driving the rented minibus this evening?
The second-person plural present vezettek happens to look exactly like third-person plural past vezettek. Subject and context disambiguate: Ti vezettek? “Are you driving?” versus Ők vezettek tegnap, “They drove yesterday.”
Past and conditional
| Person | Past indefinite | Past definite | Conditional indefinite | Conditional definite |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| én | vezettem | vezettem | vezetnék | vezetném |
| te | vezettél | vezetted | vezetnél | vezetnéd |

Imperative–subjunctive
| Person | Indefinite | Definite |
|---|---|---|
| én | vezessek | vezessem |
| te | vezess / vezessél | vezesd / vezessed |
| ő / ön | vezessen | vezesse |
| mi | vezessünk | vezessük |
| ti | vezessetek | vezessétek |
| ők / önök | vezessenek | vezessék |
Long vezessél/vezessed is (informal) and often more insistent than short vezess/vezesd. The paradigm also appears after predicates of request, purpose, permission, and necessity.
Vezess óvatosan, mert az erdő mellett gyakran átszaladnak az őzek!
Drive carefully because deer often run across the road beside the forest! (informal)
Vezesd a csoportot a kijelölt gyülekezőhelyre!

Infinitive and participles
The infinitive is vezetni; personal forms are vezetnem, vezetned, vezetnie, vezetnünk, vezetnetek, vezetniük.
A hosszú műszak után már nem lett volna szabad tovább vezetnem.
After the long shift, I should not have continued driving.
| Form | Function | Example phrase |
|---|---|---|
| vezető | driving, leading; driver/manager | vezető szerkesztő |

| vezetendő | to be driven/led/maintained | vezetendő napló (formal) |

Driving and leading frames
The person operating a vehicle is the subject and the vehicle is usually the object: buszt vezet, a céges autót vezeti. A passenger is not expressed as the object unless that person is actively guided or conducted somewhere.
To lead a person, use accusative valakit plus a direction: valakit az ajtóhoz vezet. Static location and destination stay distinct.
A recepciós felvezetett minket a harmadik emeleti tárgyalóba.
The receptionist showed us up to the meeting room on the third floor.
Ez az ösvény közvetlenül a kilátóhoz vezet.
This path leads directly to the lookout tower.
English often omits the destination marker after “lead.” Hungarian result valamihez vezet requires the allative case -hoz/-hez/-höz.
A karbantartás elhalasztása később súlyosabb meghibásodáshoz vezethet.
Postponing maintenance may later lead to a more serious failure. (formal)
Abstract transitive extensions include céget/csapatot vezet “manage a company/team,” ülést vezet “chair a meeting,” and nyilvántartást vezet “keep records.” These are normal neutral uses, not metaphors confined to formal writing.
Márta tíz éve vezeti a családi pékséget.
Márta has been running the family bakery for ten years.
Prefixes and information structure
Bevezet introduces or implements, kivezet leads out or phases out, elvezet leads away, átvezet leads across or guides through, felvezet leads up or introduces, levezet leads down, conducts, or unwinds, and rávezet guides someone to a realization.

In neutral affirmative order the prefix precedes the finite verb (bevezetik). Negation places the finite verb before the prefix (nem vezették be). Narrow focus does likewise: Csak márciusban vezetik be az új díjszabást.

Key Takeaways
- Learn vezetni – vezet – vezetett – vezess/vezesd as a set.
- Use autót vezet for operating a vehicle, but autóval megy merely for traveling by car.
- A person led is accusative; a destination or abstract result takes its appropriate directional case.
- Transitive uses make indefinite versus definite agreement essential throughout the paradigm.
- Prefixes alter both lexical meaning and aspect, while negation and focus can separate them.
