dolgozik: Complete Conjugation and Usage

Dolgozik means “work,” but the English gloss does not tell you how Hungarian packages the surrounding information. An employer normally appears with -nál/-nél, a project with -on/-en/-ön, a profession with -ként, and a workplace with the location case appropriate to that place. The base verb is intransitive, so it has no definite-object paradigm.

It is also a genuine -ik verb. Careful standard Hungarian favors first-person dolgozom, while dolgozok is widespread in (informal) speech. That -m is a traditional subject ending, not the definite-object ending found in olvasom a könyvet. The wider class is described in the guide to -ik usage; here the focus is the complete reference for dolgozik itself.

Évekig külföldön dolgozva sok szakmai kapcsolatot épített ki.

By working abroad for years, she built up many professional contacts.

The personal infinitive is dolgoznom, dolgoznod, dolgoznia, dolgoznunk, dolgoznotok, dolgozniuk. Its overt subject is dative: Péternek szombaton is dolgoznia kell “Péter has to work on Saturday too.”

There is no second “definite” column because dolgozik does not govern an accusative object. Present tense covers both an occupation and activity in progress: bankban dolgozik may mean “works at a bank,” while most dolgozik means “is working now.” Hungarian does not add a form of “be” to create the progressive.

A nővérem egy kis építészirodánál dolgozik.

My sister works for a small architecture firm.

Most nem érek rá, egy sürgős árajánlaton dolgozom.

I’m not free right now; I’m working on an urgent quotation.

A szomszédaink mindketten otthonról dolgoznak.

Both of our neighbors work from home.

💡
Choose dolgozom for formal writing and careful neutral speech. Recognize dolgozok as common informal usage, but never interpret the -m of dolgozom as definite-object agreement.

Past and conditional

After university I worked at a provincial hospital for two years.

Szívesebben dolgoznék négy hosszabb napot, mint öt rövidebbet.

I would rather work four longer days than five shorter ones.

English uses the present perfect for work continuing into the present, but Hungarian uses the present: 2019 óta itt dolgozom “I have worked here since 2019.” Use dolgoztam when the employment is located in a closed past period.

Imperative–subjunctive

The final z assimilates with the imperative marker, producing written zz. These forms serve both direct commands and subordinate wishes or requirements.

midolgozzunk
tidolgozzatok
ők / Önökdolgozzanak

Dolgozz ma nyugodtan otthonról, ha ott könnyebb összpontosítanod!

Feel free to work from home today if it is easier for you to concentrate there!

A vezető azt kérte, hogy szorosabban dolgozzunk együtt a fejlesztőkkel.

The manager asked us to work more closely with the developers.

Employers, projects, workplaces, and roles

The employer frame is valakinél / valamelyik szervezetnél dolgozik. The adessive ending conceptualizes employment “at/with” an organization: a minisztériumnál, egy cégnél, Kovácséknál. English work for must not be copied with Hungarian -ért, which means “for the benefit of/in exchange for.”

A project or issue being worked on takes superessive -on/-en/-ön: a jelentésen dolgozik. A collaborator takes instrumental -val/-vel. A role takes essive-formal -ként. Physical workplaces select their ordinary local cases: az irodában, az építkezésen, Budapesten.

Réka a múzeumnál dolgozik restaurátorként.

Réka works for the museum as a conservator.

Ezen a kutatási terven két biológussal dolgozunk együtt.

We are working on this research proposal with two biologists.

A bátyám hét közben egy építkezésen dolgozik Szegeden.

My older brother works on a construction site in Szeged during the week.

Prefixed derivatives and object conjugation

Several prefixed relatives are transitive even though base dolgozik is not. Kidolgoz valamit means develop or work out in detail; feldolgoz valamit means process or work through; átdolgoz valamit means revise; ledolgoz valamit means work off or make up a period. Their finite stems normally lack -ik and take object conjugation: kidolgozok egy tervet, but kidolgozom a tervet.

A szakértők részletesen kidolgozták az új biztonsági eljárást.

The experts worked out the new safety procedure in detail.

A szerkesztő a hétvégén átdolgozott három fejezetet.

The editor revised three chapters over the weekend.

Neutral affirmative prefix order is kidolgozta. Negation and preverbal focus separate the prefix: nem dolgozta ki, A MÉRNÖK dolgozta ki. This change affects information structure, while the definite ending still agrees with the object.

A bizottság még nem dolgozta ki a támogatás feltételeit.

The committee has not yet worked out the conditions of the grant.

A PÉNZÜGYI CSAPAT dolgozta ki az új elszámolási rendszert.

It was THE FINANCE TEAM that developed the new accounting system.

💡
Store the whole frames: egy cégnél dolgozik, egy ügyön dolgozik, but transitive kidolgoz egy tervet. The prefix can change both meaning and valency.

Key Takeaways

  • Dolgozik is intransitive; careful first-person dolgozom is an -ik form, not definite agreement.
  • Use -nál/-nél for an employer, -on/-en/-ön for a project, -ként for a professional role, and normal local cases for a workplace.
  • Hungarian present can translate English present perfect when employment continues now.
  • Prefixed kidolgoz, feldolgoz, átdolgoz, and ledolgoz are transitive and can take definite endings.
  • Negation and focus separate a prefix: nem dolgozta ki, A CSAPAT dolgozta ki.
