kér: Complete Conjugation and Usage

Kér means “ask for” or “request,” and it is also the ordinary ordering verb in a café or shop. The requested item is accusative; the person or source from whom it is requested normally takes -tól/-től. This differs from kérdez, which asks a question in order to obtain information.

This reference gives both object paradigms and the verb-specific frames needed for requests, hogy clauses, politeness, and common prefixes. Unlabeled forms are neutral standard Hungarian. The special -lak/-lek pattern in megkérlek is treated here where it matters in real requests; the wider politeness system appears under conditional usage.

Principal parts

InfinitivePresent 3sgPast 3sgImperative 2sgConditional 3sgPresent participle
kérnikérkértkérj; kérdkérnekérő

Long é is stable: kérek, kértem, kérnék, kérj. In definite second-person imperative kérd, the ending is -d; do not shorten the vowel or insert an extra linking vowel.

Kérj egy másik méretet, ha ez szorít!

Ask for another size if this one is tight! (informal)

Present: ordering shows object agreement clearly

mikérünkkérjük
tikértekkéritek
ők / önökkérnekkérik

Kérek egy hosszú kávét és két pohár csapvizet.

I'd like a long coffee and two glasses of tap water.

Kérem a számlát, amikor ráér!

The bill, please, when you have a moment! (polite/formal address)

Indefinite egy hosszú kávét selects kérek; definite a számlát selects kérem. Present indicative can be perfectly polite with appropriate intonation and kérem, although conditional forms soften a larger or less routine request.

A szervezők tegnap részletes árajánlatot kértek három cégtől.

The organizers requested detailed quotations from three companies yesterday.

Kérnék még egy napot a javítások befejezésére.

I'd like one more day to finish the corrections.

Kérném az írásos visszaigazolást is, ha lehetséges.

I would also like the written confirmation, if possible. (polite/formal)

Conditional kérnék with an indefinite item and kérném with an identified item are conventional polite request forms. They do not literally assert an unreal wish; the conditional lowers the imposition.

The analytic future places object agreement on fog: kérni fogok egy másolatot, but el fogom kérni a kulcsot.

💡
Politeness does not erase object agreement. Use kérnék egy... for an indefinite order and kérném a... for an identified item. English “I would like” has no comparable verb ending.

Imperative–subjunctive

PersonIndefiniteDefinite
énkérjekkérjem
tekérj / kérjélkérd / kérjed
ő / önkérjenkérje
mikérjünkkérjük
tikérjetekkérjétek
ők / önökkérjenekkérjék

Long kérjél/kérjed is conversational and can sound more insistent. The same series appears after a governing expression.

Kérd el a belépőkártyát a recepcióstól!

Ask the receptionist for the access card! (informal)

A tanár azt javasolta, hogy kérjünk segítséget a könyvtárostól.

The teacher suggested that we ask the librarian for help.

Kérem, hogy a kitöltött űrlapot péntekig küldje vissza.

Please return the completed form by Friday. (formal)

In the formal formula kérem, hogy..., present definite kérem frames a requested action, and the subordinate verb carries formal third-person agreement. This is not the same as asking whether something is true.

Infinitive and participles

The infinitive is kérni; personal forms are kérnem, kérned, kérnie, kérnünk, kérnetek, kérniük.

A belépéshez mindenkinek külön engedélyt kell kérnie.

Everyone has to request separate authorization for entry.

A kért igazolást csatoltam ehhez az üzenethez.

I have attached the requested certificate to this message. (formal correspondence)

Elnézést kérve félbeszakította a hosszú telefonbeszélgetést.

Apologizing, she interrupted the long phone conversation.

Bare kérendő is (formal) and most likely in instructions or administrative prose. Everyday speech usually uses kell kérni.

Item, source, and beneficiary

The core frame is kér valakitől valamit: requested item accusative, source -tól/-től. A beneficiary can take dative.

A szomszédtól kértem kölcsön egy létrát a hétvégére.

I borrowed a ladder from the neighbor for the weekend.

Kérsz a gyerekeknek is egy-egy gombóc fagyit?

Will you order a scoop of ice cream for each of the children too?

The dative a gyerekeknek marks beneficiaries; it does not replace the ablative source. In a restaurant the server or establishment is usually understood, so only the item is expressed.

Request clauses versus information questions

Azt kéri, hogy... introduces an action the requester wants performed. Azt kérdezi, hogy... introduces information sought. English uses ask for both and therefore encourages the wrong Hungarian choice.

A szerelő azt kérte, hogy kapcsoljuk ki a készüléket.

The technician asked us to switch off the device.

A szerelő azt kérdezte, hogy kikapcsoltuk-e a készüléket.

The technician asked whether we had switched off the device.

The first subordinate verb is imperative–subjunctive because it is a request. The second is an indirect polar question and bears -e.

Megkér valakit, hogy... makes the requested person a definite accusative object. With first-person subject and familiar second-person object, the special form is megkérlek.

Megkérlek, hogy szólj rám indulás előtt tíz perccel.

Please remind me ten minutes before we leave. (informal)

💡
Use a semantic test: if you want an action, choose kér plus a subjunctive request clause; if you want information, choose kérdez plus an indirect question.

Prefixes and information structure

Elkér obtains something by asking, often temporarily; megkér asks a person to act; felkér formally invites or commissions; bekér requests submission; kikér requests/demands something out; visszakér asks to have something returned.

A múzeum felkérte a történészt a kiállítás megnyitására.

The museum invited the historian to open the exhibition. (formal)

Nem kértem el a lakáskulcsot, mert estére mindenki hazaért.

I didn't ask to borrow the apartment key because everyone was home by evening.

Kitől kértétek vissza a hiányzó példányokat?

From whom did you ask for the missing copies back?

The last two show separation after negation and a focused interrogative. Prefix position is grammatical information structure, not a change to the source case.

Common Mistakes

⚠️ Kérek a pincérnek egy pohár vizet.

Means that the water is for the waiter; it does not mark the waiter as the source of the request.

✅ Kérek a pincértől egy pohár vizet.

I'll ask the waiter for a glass of water.

❌ Kérnék most a számlát.

Incorrect object agreement in the conditional: a számlát is definite.

✅ Kérném most a számlát.

I would like the bill now, please.

❌ A vezető azt kérte, hogy mikor érkezünk.

Incorrect verb for an information question: kérdezte is required.

✅ A vezető azt kérdezte, hogy mikor érkezünk.

The manager asked when we would arrive.

⚠️ Nem elkértem a jegyzeteket.

Possible only with corrective contrast; neutral negation separates el.

✅ Nem kértem el a jegyzeteket.

I didn't ask to borrow the notes.

Key Takeaways

  • Kér requests an item or action; kérdez seeks information.
  • The item is accusative, while the source/person asked normally takes -tól/-től.
  • Object definiteness distinguishes kérek/kérem, kérnék/kérném, and kérj/kérd.
  • Conditional forms conventionally soften requests without suspending object agreement.
  • Prefixes create distinct frames, and negation or focus can separate them.
