kérdez: Complete Conjugation and Usage

Kérdez means “ask a question”: the desired outcome is information. Hungarian can make either the person questioned or the question content an accusative object, and indirect questions have their own clause structure. This distinguishes kérdez from kér, which requests an item or action.

This page gives both object paradigms, the assimilated kérdezz- imperative, personal infinitives, participles, clause frames, and major prefixes. Unlabeled forms are neutral standard Hungarian. The kér reference gives the complementary request system.

Principal parts

InfinitivePresent 3sgPast 3sgImperative 2sgConditional 3sgPresent participle
kérdeznikérdezkérdezettkérdezz; kérdezdkérdeznekérdező

The third-person past needs linking -ett: kérdezett. In the imperative, stem-final z and j assimilate to zz: kérdezz, kérdezzen, kérdezzük. Definite second-person short kérdezd retains zd, while long kérdezzed shows zz.

Kérdezz bátran, ha valamelyik lépés nem világos!

Ask freely if any of the steps is unclear! (informal)

Present: person or content as object

Az előadás végén minden résztvevő kérdezhet valamit.

At the end of the lecture, every participant may ask something.

Miért engem kérdezel? Én sem kaptam meg a beosztást.

Why are you asking me? I haven't received the schedule either.

Indefinite valamit selects the indefinite paradigm. Although engem refers to a specific person, first- and second-person pronoun objects do not trigger the ordinary definite paradigm. A second-person subject asking first-person engem therefore uses indefinite kérdezel, not kérdezed. This person-hierarchy rule is a genuine exception to an article-only shortcut.

With a third-person definite object, definite agreement is transparent:

A bizottság először a pénzügyi igazgatót kérdezi.

The committee is questioning the finance director first. (formal)

First I would ask whether there are any appointments still available.

Kit kérdeztetek meg, mielőtt megváltoztattátok a tervet?

Whom did you ask before changing the plan?

The analytic future places agreement on fog: kérdezni fogok valamit, but meg fogom kérdezni az ügyintézőt.

Long kérdezzél/kérdezzed is conversational and can sound insistent; short kérdezz/kérdezd is neutral. The same forms serve in indirect commands.

Kérdezd meg a gyógyszerészt, hogy étkezés előtt kell-e bevenni!

Ask the pharmacist whether it has to be taken before a meal! (informal)

The moderator asked us to ask questions only at the end.

Nem szeretném, hogy erről a gyerekeket kérdezzék.

I wouldn't like the children to be questioned about this.

💡
In kérdezd meg a gyógyszerészt, the person is a definite accusative object, hence kérdezd. The information sought appears separately as a hogy...-e clause.

Infinitive and participles

The infinitive is kérdezni; personal forms are kérdeznem, kérdezned, kérdeznie, kérdeznünk, kérdeznetek, kérdezniük.

Ezt nekem kell megkérdeznem a projektvezetőtől.

I have to ask the project manager this.

Bare kérdezendő is rare and (formal); a relative clause such as akit meg kell kérdezni is more natural in conversation.

Asking a person, asking about a topic

A person can be direct object: megkérdez valakit. The topic then takes -ról/-ről, while a source phrasing with -tól/-től is also possible when the emphasis is on obtaining an answer from someone.

A szerkesztő a kutatót kérdezte az új eredményekről.

The editor asked the researcher about the new findings.

Ezt inkább a rendszergazdától kérdezd meg, mert ő kezeli a jogosultságokat.

Ask the system administrator about this instead, because she manages the permissions.

The two frames construe the person differently. Use megkérdezem a rendszergazdát when the system administrator is the person questioned, but ezt megkérdezem a rendszergazdától when ezt is the content object and the system administrator is its source.

Indirect wh- and polar questions

An indirect wh-question retains its interrogative word but has ordinary subordinate clause order. An indirect polar question normally puts enclitic -e on the finite verb. When present-tense van is omitted from a nonverbal predicate, -e attaches to that predicate instead.

A vendég azt kérdezte, hol lehet taxit rendelni.

The guest asked where one could order a taxi.

A főnök megkérdezte, elkészült-e már a havi jelentés.

The boss asked whether the monthly report was ready yet.

A vendég megkérdezte, szabad-e még az ablak melletti hely.

The guest asked whether the seat by the window was still free.

The content is definite even when demonstrative azt is omitted, so the reporting form is normally kérdezte / megkérdezte, not indefinite kérdezett, when a particular question clause is selected.

💡
Use -e for a reported yes/no question, not for a reported command: megkérdezte, jövök-e seeks information; megkért, hogy jöjjek requests an action.

Kér versus kérdez

GoalVerb and frameEnglish
obtain a thingkér valamit valakitőlask someone for something

Prefixes and information structure

Key Takeaways

  • Kérdez seeks information; kér seeks an item or action.
  • A person or content can be accusative, and a topic takes -ról/-ről.
  • Indirect polar questions use -e; indirect wh-questions retain the wh-word.
  • Stem-final z + j gives zz throughout most of the imperative–subjunctive paradigm.
  • Prefixes narrow the kind of questioning, while negation and focus can separate them.
