kell: Complete Conjugation and Usage

Kell expresses necessity or need. In its central modal frame, it remains third-person singular while the person under the obligation is dative and, when expressed, is marked on a personal infinitive: nekem mennem kell “I have to go.” With a noun subject, however, kell can mean “be needed/wanted” and show ordinary person or number agreement.

This reference separates those two structures, presents the attested paradigm, and explains kellett, kellene, negation, possessed szükség, and prefix climbing. Unlabeled uses are neutral standard Hungarian. See personal infinitives for the broader suffix system.

Principal parts and two constructions

kellis necessary; is neededindulni kell; kell egy toll
kellettwas necessary/neededindulni kellett
kellenewould be necessary; shouldpihenni kellene
kelljenshould have to/be neededne kelljen várni
kellenito be neededkelleni fog

Holnap korábban kell indulnunk, mert lezárják a rakpartot.

We have to leave earlier tomorrow because the embankment will be closed.

Here kell carries modality but no personal ending. First-person plural -nunk on indulnunk identifies who must leave.

The personal paradigm exists, but modal kell is usually singular

When a person or thing itself is “needed/wanted,” ordinary intransitive person forms are possible. There is no definite-object series because the needed entity is the subject.

A regisztrációhoz kell egy fényképes igazolvány.

A photo ID is required for registration.

A szereléshez még kellenek hosszabb csavarok is.

Some longer screws are also needed for the installation.

Most különösen kellesz a csapatnak, mert te ismered a régi rendszert.

The team especially needs you now because you know the old system.

Personal kellek/kellesz can sound emotionally strong when people are involved; neutral professional prose often chooses szükség van rád/önre. By contrast, modal kell before an infinitive does not agree with the obligated person: neked menned kell, not kellesz.

Dative participant and personal infinitive

Person under necessityInfinitiveFull frame
én / nekemmennemnekem mennem kell
te / nekedmennedneked menned kell
ő / nekimennieneki mennie kell
mi / nekünkmennünknekünk mennünk kell
ti / nektekmenneteknektek mennetek kell
ők / nekikmenniüknekik menniük kell

The dative pronoun can be omitted when context identifies the actor, but the personal infinitive stays when a specific person must be encoded.

Délután vissza kell hívnom az ügyfelet.

I have to call the client back this afternoon.

A pályázóknak két ajánlólevelet kell csatolniuk.

Applicants must attach two letters of recommendation. (formal)

For a general instruction, bare infinitive is natural: Itt le kell venni a cipőt “Shoes must be removed here.” No arbitrary dummy subject corresponding to English you is required.

💡
In the modal frame, person belongs on the infinitive, not on kell: nekem írnom kell, neked írnod kell, nekik írniuk kell. The form kellesz instead means that “you are needed.”

Past, conditional, and counterfactual combinations

Modal kellett and kellene remain invariant; only the infinitive identifies the actor.

Tegnap három külön irodába kellett elmennem ugyanazért az igazolásért.

Yesterday I had to go to three different offices for the same certificate.

Többet kellene aludnod a vizsga előtti héten.

You should sleep more in the week before the exam.

Kellene can give advice (“should”), express a missing necessity, or soften a request for an item.

Kellene még egy önkéntes a péntek esti műszakra.

We could use one more volunteer for the Friday evening shift.

Past counterfactual obligation uses kellett volna + personal infinitive.

El kellett volna mentenünk a fájlt a frissítés előtt.

We should have saved the file before the update.

This means the saving was necessary but did not happen. It differs from plain past el kellett mentenünk, which normally presents the action as an actual requirement and often implies compliance.

Imperative–subjunctive and infinitive of kell

The personal imperative–subjunctive series is kelljek, kellj/kelljél, kelljen, kelljünk, kelljetek, kelljenek. It belongs to the lexical “be needed” construction; central impersonal modality most often uses kelljen.

Úgy készítsük el az útmutatót, hogy ne kelljen külön magyarázatot kérni.

Let's prepare the guide so that no separate explanation is needed.

Nem akarom, hogy csak akkor kelljek, amikor baj van.

I don't want to be needed only when there is trouble.

The infinitive kelleni is most visible after another auxiliary, especially future fog.

A festéshez még két nagy vödör fog kelleni.

Two more large buckets will be needed for the painting.

Personal infinitives of kelleni require care. The complete series is kellenem, kellened, kellenie, kellenünk, kellenetek, kelleniük. They mean “for me/you/etc. to be needed,” not “I/you have to do something,” and are uncommon outside deliberately constructed clauses.

Furcsa érzés mindenkinek egyszerre kellenem.

It is a strange feeling to be needed by everyone at once.

Participles and possessed need

Kell is defective in its central modal use. It does not freely build a full everyday participial series. Kellő is an established present-participial adjective meaning “sufficient, appropriate, due”; regular-looking kellendő and kellve are not neutral modern production forms.

Kellő előkészítés nélkül a költözés sokkal tovább tart.

Without adequate preparation, the move takes much longer. (formal)

Hungarian also expresses need with possessed szükség plus van. The needed item then takes -ra/-re.

Szükségem van a szerződés eredeti példányára.

I need the original copy of the contract.

Compare Kell az eredeti példány “The original copy is needed” with Szükségem van az eredeti példányra “I need the original copy.” The latter foregrounds the experiencer through szükség-em.

💡
Choose between two perspectives: kell valami presents an item as needed; szükségem van valamire packages the need as possessed by a person and requires -ra/-re on the item.

Negation: not necessary is not forbidden

Nem kell + infinitive means “need not / do not have to.” It does not mean “must not”; prohibition normally uses nem szabad or a negative imperative.

Holnap nem kell bejönnötök, mert zárva lesz az iroda.

You don't have to come in tomorrow because the office will be closed.

Ezt a kapcsolót nem szabad megérinteni.

This switch must not be touched.

The contrast is logical: nem kell negates necessity, leaving the action optional; nem szabad denies permission.

Prefix climbing and focus

The apparent prefix before kell belongs to the infinitive: meg kell írni, el kell mennem, be kell küldeni. Neutral affirmative order favors climbing. Under negation or narrow focus, it normally returns to the infinitive.

A kérelmet elektronikusan kell beküldeni, nem postán.

The application must be submitted electronically, not by post. (formal)

Ezt a részt nem kell újraírnod; csak a címet javítsd ki.

You don't have to rewrite this section; just correct the title.

Legkésőbb mikor kell leadnunk a kulcsokat?

By when at the latest do we have to hand in the keys?

Focused elektronikusan and mikor block neutral climbing; negation produces nem kell újraírnod. The prefix remains semantically attached to the lower verb.

Common Mistakes

❌ Nekem holnap dolgozok kell.

Incorrect modal frame: the lower verb must be a personal infinitive.

✅ Nekem holnap délelőtt dolgoznom kell.

I have to work tomorrow morning.

❌ A vendégeknek hétre kell megérkeznetek.

Incorrect personal infinitive: third-person plural requires megérkezniük.

✅ A vendégeknek hétre kell megérkezniük.

The guests have to arrive by seven.

⚠️ Nem kell belépni ide.

Means that entering is unnecessary; it does not express a prohibition.

✅ Ide nem szabad belépni.

Entry is forbidden here.

⚠️ Nem meg kell írnod a teljes fejezetet.

Possible only under corrective contrast; neutral negated necessity keeps meg with the infinitive.

✅ Nem kell megírnod a teljes fejezetet.

You don't have to write the entire chapter.

Key Takeaways

  • Lexical “be needed” can agree: kellek, kellesz, kell, kellünk, kelletek, kellenek.
  • Kellett marks past necessity; kellene gives advice or softened need; kellett volna is counterfactual.
  • Nem kell means “need not,” not “must not.”
  • A prefix before kell belongs to the infinitive and responds to negation and focus.
