Alternative, Tag, and Echo Questions: Contrasts and Learner Traps

Hungarian choice, tag, and echo questions may contain the same words as statements or ordinary polar questions. Their contrast lies in what is focused, which answers are offered, and what the speaker already believes. Vagy presents alternatives, ugye favors confirmation, igaz? checks a proposition explicitly, vajon marks wondering, and echo order repairs a previous utterance. Review their basic shapes on the forms page and their conversational functions on the usage page.

Alternative question versus polar question

The same two nouns can fall inside a broad yes-or-no question or form the focus of a forced choice. Word order and prosody guide the reading.

Kérsz kávét vagy teát?

Would you like coffee or tea?

Kávét vagy teát kérsz?

Which would you like, coffee or tea?

The first can ask broadly whether either drink is wanted, especially when kávét vagy teát remains backgrounded after the verb. A natural answer can be Nem, köszönöm “No, thank you.” In the second, the alternative phrase occupies preverbal focus and normally requests one of the two options. The expected answer is Kávét or Teát. On this choice reading, the first option typically rises and the final option falls; the broad polar reading instead places the disjunction inside the ordinary yes–no contour.

This distinction is not always visible in English, and punctuation alone cannot force it. If a third option matters, make that possibility explicit:

Kávét vagy teát kérsz, vagy inkább valami mást?

Would you like coffee or tea, or would you prefer something else?

Constituent alternative versus clause alternative

Vagy can coordinate two expressions with the same role or two complete propositions.

Hétfőn vagy kedden érkezel?

Are you arriving on Monday or Tuesday?

Hétfőn érkezel, vagy kedden már dolgozol?

Are you arriving on Monday, or are you already working on Tuesday?

The first coordinates two time expressions and has no comma. The second coordinates finite clauses and uses a comma. It also contrasts different events, not merely two possible arrival days.

Case must be appropriate inside each alternative. Parallel meaning does not require identical endings:

A könyvtárban vagy otthon szeretnél tanulni?

Would you like to study at the library or at home?

Both locations happen to be inessive. By contrast, a parkban vagy a folyó mellett is equally grammatical: Hungarian chooses the conventional relation for each noun rather than manufacturing formal symmetry.

Neutral polar question versus X vagy nem?

A plain polar question leaves the interaction relatively open. Adding vagy nem? insists that the listener choose a polarity.

Eljössz a pénteki megbeszélésre?

Are you coming to Friday’s meeting?

Eljössz a pénteki megbeszélésre vagy nem?

Are you coming to Friday’s meeting or not?

The propositional content is the same, but the second often suggests that the speaker has already asked, needs a firm commitment, or is losing patience. It is useful in a deadline but unnecessarily confrontational as a friendly first invitation.

With two full alternatives, name the meaningful opposite instead:

Eljössz a megbeszélésre, vagy elküldjük utána az összefoglalót?

Are you coming to the meeting, or should we send you the summary afterward?

💡
Choose vagy nem? for a genuinely required yes/no commitment. Choose a full second clause when the practical consequence matters more than the polarity itself.

Ugye versus an unbiased question

Ugye reveals an expectation, hope, or desired alignment. A question without it can be genuinely open.

Megkaptad az üzenetemet?

Did you receive my message?

Ugye megkaptad az üzenetemet?

You received my message, right?

The second speaker leans toward “yes.” That bias can be warm and cooperative, but it can also pressure the answer. A doctor, interviewer, or survey writer seeking neutral information should generally avoid leading ugye.

Polarity does not change the particle:

Nem mondtad el senkinek, ugye?

You didn’t tell anyone, did you?

English switches from negative statement to positive tag. Hungarian simply adds invariant ugye.

Ugye versus igaz?

Both can invite confirmation, but they package the check differently.

Holnap zárva lesz az iroda, ugye?

The office will be closed tomorrow, right?

Holnap zárva lesz az iroda, igaz?

The office will be closed tomorrow, is that correct?

Final ugye? appeals to shared understanding and is very common in (informal) and neutral interaction. Igaz? explicitly checks truth and can sound more deliberate, businesslike, or challenging. Neither requires the English auxiliary-polarity calculation.

Nemde? has a similar confirmation function but is (formal), (literary), or playful. Using it as the basic everyday translation of “isn’t it?” would misrepresent modern usage.

Ugye versus vajon

Ugye orients toward listener agreement; vajon presents a question as the speaker’s uncertainty or wondering. Vajon does not itself demand the answer favored by the speaker.

Ugye időben odaérünk?

We’ll get there on time, won’t we?

Vajon időben odaérünk?

I wonder whether we’ll get there on time.

The first seeks reassurance. The second can be addressed to oneself or left rhetorically open. Vajon is common in reflective questions and in written exposition; it is not simply a more formal ugye.

💡
Ask whose commitment is at issue. Ugye recruits the listener to confirm; vajon displays the speaker’s open uncertainty; igaz? checks the truth of a completed assertion.

Echo question versus ordinary wh-question

An ordinary wh-question introduces a missing value and normally puts it in preverbal focus. Hungarian retains that preverbal wh-position in a full echo question too; prior discourse, rise–fall prosody, and optional initial hogy create the repair reading.

Kivel ebédelt Áron tegnap?

Who did Áron have lunch with yesterday?

Hogy Áron tegnap kivel ebédelt?

Áron had lunch with who yesterday? (echo)

The second is appropriate after someone has just named an unexpected companion or spoken unclearly. Initial hogy and echo intonation mark the repair, while kivel remains immediately before the verb as Hungarian wh syntax requires.

An echo need not contain a wh-word:

– A szerződés tíz évre szól. – Tíz évre?

— The contract runs for ten years. — For ten years?

This can request repetition or convey disbelief. A new information question would be Hány évre szól a szerződés?

Echo repair versus alternative repair

Echoes isolate what was heard; alternatives test a hypothesis about it.

– Szombaton indul a busz. – Mikor indul?

— The bus leaves on Saturday. — When does it leave?

– Szombaton indul a busz. – Szombaton vagy vasárnap?

— The bus leaves on Saturday. — On Saturday or Sunday?

The first reopens the time variable. The second proposes two candidates, perhaps because the listener is unsure whether they heard szombaton or vasárnap. Both are repair questions, but only the second restricts the answer set.

Information structure and prefix position

Focused alternatives behave like other Hungarian foci and can split a verb prefix from its verb.

A számlát vagy a szerződést küldted el tegnap?

Was it the invoice or the contract that you sent yesterday?

The alternative object stands before küldted, while prefix el follows. Compare a confirmation question, where the same object is not contrastive focus:

Ugye elküldted tegnap a szerződést?

You sent the contract yesterday, right?

Here el remains attached before küldted. Question formation has reorganized focus in the first sentence, not inverted subject and verb.

Decision tree

  1. Must the listener choose between named items or situations? Use X vagy Y.
  2. Is the choice between positive and negative commitment? Use X vagy nem?, remembering its forceful tone.
  3. Do you expect or desire confirmation? Use ugye.
  4. Are you explicitly checking whether a statement is true? Use final igaz?.
  5. Are you voicing open uncertainty rather than favoring an answer? Use vajon or a neutral polar question.
  6. Are you repairing something just said? Repeat the uncertain constituent or use an echo wh-expression.
  7. Does the question introduce new missing information without prior speech? Use an ordinary wh-question with its normal falling contour, not echo hogy or echo rise–fall prosody.

Diagnostic exercise

  1. Moziba vagy színházba menjünk? — constituent alternative: choose a destination.
  2. Indulsz, vagy még maradsz? — two finite clauses and two situations.
  3. Indulsz végre vagy nem? — polarity alternative with impatience signaled by végre.
  4. Ugye bezártad az ablakot? — expected confirmation, probably a reminder.
  5. Vajon bezárta valaki az ablakot? — open wondering about an uncertain event.
  6. Hogy az ablakot mikor zárta be? — marked echo repair with optional echo hogy; neutral information-seeking order would be Mikor zárta be az ablakot?

Common Mistakes

❌ Teát vagy kávéval kérsz?

Incorrect — the alternatives do not have the same grammatical role or case.

✅ Teát vagy kávét kérsz?

Would you like tea or coffee?

❌ Ugye elküldted-e a választ?

Incorrect — ugye and interrogative -e cannot occur in the same question.

✅ Ugye elküldted a választ?

You sent the reply, right?

❌ Te vagy jössz velünk holnap?

Incorrect — vagy cannot be inserted as an English-style question auxiliary.

✅ Te jössz velünk holnap?

Are you coming with us tomorrow?

❌ Kivel Áron találkozott a konferencia után?

Incorrect neutral order — the subject intervenes between wh-focus and the verb.

✅ Kivel találkozott Áron a konferencia után?

Who did Áron meet after the conference?

Key Takeaways

  • Preverbal X vagy Y normally requests a choice; a postverbal disjunction can remain inside a broader polar question.
  • X vagy nem? is more demanding than a plain polar question.
  • Ugye seeks expected agreement, igaz? checks truth explicitly, and vajon voices open uncertainty.
  • Echo interpretation depends on prior speech and rise–fall prosody; a single wh-expression still normally stands before the verb.
  • Focused alternatives can force a verb prefix behind the verb.
  • Hungarian uses focus and prosody rather than English-style subject–auxiliary inversion.
