Alternative, tag, and echo questions manage the conversation as much as they request facts. A vagy question can offer a helpful menu or force a decision; ugye can create friendly alignment or exert pressure; an echo can repair a misheard word or display astonishment. Natural Hungarian depends on what the speaker assumes and what response they want, not on a fixed English translation. Review the structural templates on the forms page; difficult boundary choices are compared on the contrast page.
Offering a bounded choice
Use a constituent alternative when the listener should choose among a small set already relevant in the situation.
Az ablak mellé vagy a teraszra ülnétek?
Would you like to sit by the window or out on the terrace?
Telefonon vagy e-mailben küldjem el a visszaigazolást?
Should I send the confirmation by phone or by email?
The alternatives share a grammatical role but retain the case or postposition required for that role: az ablak mellé / a teraszra are both destinations; telefonon / e-mailben are two channels expressed with different conventional cases. Hungarian does not require parallel suffixes when ordinary usage selects different forms.
A focused alternative commonly stands immediately before the verb:
A tavaszi vagy az őszi tanfolyamra jelentkeztél?
Did you register for the spring course or the autumn one?
The question presupposes registration and asks which course. This is narrower than a neutral polar question such as Jelentkeztél valamelyik tanfolyamra? “Did you register for any course?”
Choosing between situations
Clause alternatives are useful for plans, explanations, and practical decisions.
Ma főzünk, vagy rendelünk valamit?
Are we cooking today, or are we ordering something?
Elromlott a kártyaolvasó, vagy csak nincs bekapcsolva?
Is the card reader broken, or is it simply not switched on?
Te foglalod le a szállást, vagy intézzem én?
Are you booking the accommodation, or shall I take care of it?
These questions set two propositions against each other. They are not necessarily exhaustive: context may allow a third explanation. Vagy says that the speaker currently treats the named options as the useful contrast.
X vagy nem? and conversational pressure
Adding vagy nem? requests an explicit yes-or-no commitment. It is common when earlier answers have been unclear, time is short, or the speaker is frustrated.
Jössz velünk vagy nem? Indulnunk kell.
Are you coming with us or not? We have to leave.
Elfogadjátok az ajánlatot vagy nem?
Are you accepting the offer or not?
The construction is grammatically neutral but pragmatically forceful. In a relaxed first request, a plain polar question is usually more considerate:
Szeretnél velünk jönni?
Would you like to come with us?
English “or not” can be mild, especially inside an embedded question. Hungarian sentence-final vagy nem? often sounds more demanding. Tone and relationship matter.
Ugye for expected agreement
Use ugye when you expect or hope that the proposition is true and invite the listener to align with you.
Ugye szólsz, ha késel?
You’ll let me know if you’re late, right?
Nem hagytuk otthon a jegyeket, ugye?
We didn’t leave the tickets at home, did we?
Ez az út rövidebb, ugye?
This route is shorter, isn’t it?
The first can function as a gentle reminder as well as a question. The second voices anxiety and seeks reassurance. The third checks shared knowledge. English changes the tag’s auxiliary and polarity; Hungarian ugye stays the same.
That invariance does not make ugye semantically empty. In a disagreement, it can sound leading:
Ugye mindenki egyetért azzal, hogy lezárhatjuk a vitát?
Everyone agrees that we can close the discussion, right?
The wording publicly favors “yes.” In a meeting where dissent must be welcome, ask a neutral question instead: Van valakinek ellenvetése? “Does anyone have an objection?”
Igaz? for an explicit check
Final igaz? or nem igaz? treats the previous clause as a proposition whose truth is being checked.
A garancia két évig érvényes, igaz?
The warranty is valid for two years, correct?
Ön már benyújtotta a kérelmet, nem igaz?
You have already submitted the application, is that correct?
This makes igaz? useful in interviews, customer service, and careful fact checking. It can also sound prosecutorial if the listener feels challenged. Ugye is more integrated and interpersonal; igaz? more transparently asks “is that true?”
In (formal) administrative language, a neutral direct question is often better than either leading tag: Benyújtotta már a kérelmet? “Have you submitted the application yet?” In (informal) conversation, final ugye? is the most flexible everyday option. Nemde? is (literary), old-fashioned, or playful.
Echo questions for hearing repair
An echo repeats part of a previous utterance and replaces the unclear element or isolates it for confirmation.
– A futár fél hétkor érkezik. – Fél hétkor?
— The courier is arriving at half past six. — At half past six?
– A számlát Zoltánnak küldtem. – Kinek küldted?
— I sent the invoice to Zoltán. — Who did you send it to?
The first repeats exactly the uncertain time. The second uses ordinary preverbal kinek, but context makes it a repair rather than a new topic. A fuller echo can repeat old material before the strongly accented preverbal wh-word and may begin with hogy:
– Lilla tegnap költözött Reykjavíkba. – Hogy Lilla tegnap hova költözött?
— Lilla moved to Reykjavík yesterday. — Lilla moved where?
Hungarian keeps echo hova immediately before költözött; initial hogy, the repeated background, and the rise–fall contour signal repair. A neutral request for Lilla’s destination is Hova költözött Lilla?
Echoes can convey surprise even when hearing was perfect:
– Három nap alatt befejezték a felújítást. – Három nap alatt?
— They finished the renovation in three days. — In three days?
The same words may therefore mean “Did I hear that correctly?” or “I find that hard to believe.” Voice and context distinguish them.
Repairing the alternatives themselves
Sometimes the listener understands the question but not the proposed choice. A short alternative echo can narrow the repair.
– Budán vagy Pesten találkozzunk? – Budán vagy Pesten? Nekem mindkettő jó.
— Shall we meet in Buda or Pest? — In Buda or Pest? Either works for me.
The repetition confirms the relevant dimension before answering. A different repair rejects the premise: Nem lehetne inkább online? “Couldn’t we do it online instead?”
A short dialogue
– Személyesen jössz, vagy online csatlakozol? – Inkább online. Az is megfelel, ugye? – Persze.
— Are you coming in person, or joining online? — Online, preferably. That works too, right? — Of course.
The first turn offers a genuine choice. Inkább marks the preferred alternative. The second speaker then uses ugye because they expect that the online option, already offered, will be accepted.
– Akkor tízkor kezdünk. – Tízkor? Én kilencre emlékeztem.
— So we’re starting at ten. — At ten? I remembered nine.
Here the echo exposes a conflicting memory and initiates repair without constructing a full new question.
Formal and informal comparison
In (formal) writing, alternatives are often embedded in a request and spelled out symmetrically:
Kérem, jelezze, hogy személyesen vagy online kíván-e részt venni.
Please indicate whether you wish to participate in person or online. (formal)
In (informal) speech, two direct finite alternatives are more natural:
Bejössz, vagy inkább videón kapcsolódsz be?
Are you coming in, or would you rather join by video? (informal)
The formal sentence uses embedded interrogative -e on kíván-e. The informal one depends on ordinary question intonation and vagy. Neither uses English subject–auxiliary inversion.
Common Mistakes
❌ A kék bögrét vagy a zöld bögre kéred?
Incorrect — both complete object alternatives require accusative marking.
✅ A kék bögrét vagy a zöld bögrét kéred?
Would you like the blue mug or the green one?
❌ Ugye fog-e működni a belépőkártya?
Incorrect — ugye and interrogative -e cannot occur together.
✅ Ugye működni fog a belépőkártya?
The access card will work, right?
❌ Te vagy szeretnél korábban indulni?
Incorrect — Hungarian vagy is not the question auxiliary in English would you.
✅ Te szeretnél korábban indulni?
Would you like to leave earlier?
❌ Hova Lilla költözött tegnap?
Incorrect neutral order — the subject separates the wh-focus from the verb.
✅ Hova költözött Lilla tegnap?
Where did Lilla move yesterday?
Key Takeaways
- Alternative questions present a bounded contrast; do not imply that the named options are exhaustive when they are not.
- Final vagy nem? demands a clear commitment and can sound impatient.
- Ugye seeks expected agreement, while igaz? explicitly checks truth.
- Echoes depend on a previous utterance and may repair hearing or express surprise.
- Full echo wh-questions normally retain preverbal wh placement; context, optional hogy, and rise–fall prosody supply the repair reading.
- Formal Hungarian often embeds alternatives with -e; informal speech favors direct vagy questions.
