Alternative, Tag, and Echo Questions: Forms and Core Pattern

Hungarian can ask the listener to choose between alternatives, confirm an expectation, or repair something just heard. These functions use statement-like clause structure plus vagy “or,” tags such as ugye? and igaz?, or a strongly accented echo expression. English auxiliary inversion is not added. Hungarian signals the question mainly through focus placement, the alternative structure, and prosody.

The core patterns

Question typeCore formTypical purpose
constituent alternativeX vagy Y + verb?choose one item
clause alternativeclause, vagy clause?choose one situation
polarity alternativeX vagy nem?commit to yes or no
confirmation questionUgye + clause?seek expected agreement
detached tagstatement, ugye/igaz?check a statement
echo repair(hogy) + old material + WH + verb?clarify a surprising or unheard part

These patterns overlap in being interrogative, but they do not request the same kind of answer. A vagy question presents alternatives; ugye favors confirmation; an echo question presupposes a previous utterance.

Alternatives inside one constituent

When two noun phrases fill the same grammatical role, connect them with vagy. Case marking belongs to the alternatives or to the larger phrase that contains them.

Almalevet vagy ásványvizet kérsz?

Would you like apple juice or mineral water?

A délelőtti vagy a délutáni vonattal jöttök?

Are you coming on the morning train or the afternoon train?

In the first sentence both nouns independently carry accusative -t. In the second, two adjectives contrast within one noun phrase and the shared noun vonattal carries instrumental -val, with assimilation. Do not leave one complete noun alternative unmarked merely because English marks neither one.

The alternative phrase normally occupies the preverbal focus field:

A kis vagy a nagy tárgyalót foglaltad le?

Did you reserve the small meeting room or the large one?

The alternatives are the requested information. Foglaltad le has its prefix after the verb because the alternative phrase is focused.

Alternatives between clauses

Use a comma before vagy when it joins two finite clauses. Each clause can have its own subject, verb, and focus.

Velünk vacsorázol, vagy később találkozunk?

Are you having dinner with us, or shall we meet later?

Te viszed el a csomagot, vagy rendeljek futárt?

Are you taking the parcel, or should I order a courier?

This is more than a choice between two words. The listener chooses between two proposed situations. English begins both alternatives with an auxiliary; Hungarian preserves ordinary finite forms and uses vagy, focus, and intonation.

X vagy nem?

An elliptical polarity alternative gives a positive possibility and then vagy nem “or not.” The missing second clause is recoverable from the first.

Elküldted a jelentést vagy nem?

Did you send the report or not?

Részt vesztek a képzésen vagy nem?

Are you taking part in the training or not?

The more explicit version repeats the predicate or supplies a genuine opposite:

Elküldted a jelentést, vagy még dolgozol rajta?

Did you send the report, or are you still working on it?

X vagy nem? is structurally regular but can sound impatient because it demands an explicit commitment. The usage page explains when that pressure is helpful and when it is too blunt.

In (formal) or deliberately explicit style, -e can mark the positive member when the second member is only nem/sem:

Elfogadta-e az ajánlatot vagy sem?

Did she accept the offer or not? (formal)

Sem is more characteristic of careful or formal wording here; everyday speech favors nem or an intonation-only polar question. When vagy connects two full alternative clauses, Hungarian normally avoids adding -e to the first merely by analogy with this elliptical pattern.

Ugye as an integrated particle and as a tag

Ugye indicates that the speaker expects, hopes for, or invites confirmation. It can occur at the beginning or inside the clause, or as a detached final tag.

Ugye megőrizted a számlát?

You kept the receipt, right?

A találkozó ugye továbbra is háromkor kezdődik?

The meeting still starts at three, right?

Holnap is elérhető leszel, ugye?

You’ll be available tomorrow too, won’t you?

Initial and medial ugye belong to the question’s intonational contour. Final ugye? can form its own short tag after a statement-like clause. Unlike English tags, ugye does not change for tense, person, or polarity: it can correspond to “isn’t it?”, “didn’t they?”, “will you?”, and many other English forms.

The interrogative clitic -e cannot occur in the same question with ugye. Choose Megérkezett-e? (formal) or Ugye megérkezett?, not a hybrid.

💡
Do not translate the English tag word by word. Build a normal Hungarian clause and add invariant ugye: Nem felejtetted el, ugye? covers English “You didn’t forget, did you?”

Igaz? and other detached checks

Igaz? literally asks whether the preceding proposition is true. It follows a complete statement and is normally separated by a comma.

A belépő az ebédet is tartalmazza, igaz?

The admission price includes lunch too, correct?

Már találkoztatok korábban, nem igaz?

You’ve met before, haven’t you?

Igaz? is more explicitly truth-checking than integrated ugye. It can sound businesslike or slightly insistent. Nemde? is (formal), (literary), or playful in present-day Hungarian and should not be presented as an everyday default.

Echo questions and preverbal question words

An ordinary information-seeking wh-expression occupies preverbal focus. Hungarian normally keeps that preverbal placement in an echo question too, unlike English “You met who?” Context, a strong rise–fall contour, and optional initial hogy mark the utterance as a repair.

– Júlia tegnap találkozott a miniszterrel. – Hogy Júlia tegnap kivel találkozott?

— Júlia met the minister yesterday. — Júlia met who yesterday?

– A javítás nyolcvanezer forintba került. – Mennyibe került?

— The repair cost eighty thousand forints. — It cost how much?

The first places kivel immediately before találkozott, while initial hogy and the context make it an echo repair. The second likewise uses ordinary preverbal mennyibe but receives an echo interpretation from context and surprised intonation. A one-word echo is also possible:

– Csütörtökön indulunk. – Csütörtökön?

— We’re leaving on Thursday. — Thursday?

Do not copy English postverbal wh-position into Hungarian. A full echo wh-question normally retains the preverbal question field; a bare repeated fragment such as Csütörtökön? needs no verb at all.

💡
Echo syntax preserves old information. Repeat enough of the previous utterance to locate the problem, but keep the question word before the verb: Hogy a csomagot mikor küldted el? Without that repair context, use neutral Mikor küldted el a csomagot?

Intonation and punctuation

Alternative choices are normally separated into prosodic units: the first option has a rising contour, while the final option falls and closes the set. A disjunction backgrounded inside one ordinary polar contour can instead ask whether either option applies. A detached ugye? or igaz? has its own tag contour. Echo replacements carry unusually strong prominence and can express mere hearing difficulty or genuine surprise.

In writing, punctuation exposes structure. No comma separates alternatives that form one constituent: teát vagy kávét. A comma normally separates coordinated finite clauses and detached tags: Jössz velünk, vagy itthon maradsz?; Jössz velünk, ugye? Capital letters or repeated punctuation may imitate echo emphasis in informal messages, but standard prose relies on wording and context.

Segmentation exercise

Consider:

A piros vagy a fekete mappát küldted el?

Did you send the red folder or the black one?

  1. A piros vagy a fekete mappát is one alternative object phrase.
  2. Accusative -t appears on the shared noun mappát.
  3. The entire alternative phrase is preverbal focus.
  4. Focus separates prefix el from küldted.
  5. The question asks the listener to identify which folder was sent.

Common Mistakes

❌ Sört vagy bor kérsz?

Incorrect — both complete noun alternatives must have the object form here.

✅ Sört vagy bort kérsz?

Would you like beer or wine?

❌ Velünk jössz vagy inkább hazamész?

Incorrect standard punctuation — vagy joins two finite clauses.

✅ Velünk jössz, vagy inkább hazamész?

Are you coming with us, or are you going home instead?

❌ Ugye elkészült-e már a vacsora?

Incorrect — ugye and interrogative -e cannot mark the same question.

✅ Ugye elkészült már a vacsora?

Dinner is ready now, right?

❌ Ugye te vagy elviszed a gyerekeket?

Incorrect English-influenced question order and misuse of vagy as if it were an auxiliary.

✅ Ugye te viszed el a gyerekeket?

You’re taking the children, right?

Key Takeaways

  • Join alternatives within one constituent with vagy and mark their Hungarian case correctly.
  • Use a comma when vagy coordinates full finite clauses, but not before elliptical vagy nem.
  • Ugye is an invariant confirmation particle; igaz? is a detached truth check.
  • Never combine ugye and interrogative -e in one question.
  • Full echo wh-questions normally keep their question word preverbal; optional hogy, context, and rise–fall prosody mark the repair reading.
  • Hungarian questions reorganize focus and prosody rather than adding English-style inversion.
