Multiple and Embedded Questions: Forms and Core Pattern

Hungarian preserves its focus-based question architecture inside larger clauses. In a simple wh-question, a question phrase occupies the immediately preverbal focus field. A multiple question can gather several wh-phrases before the verb for a pair-list reading or leave an additional wh-phrase after the verb. An embedded wh-question keeps this local Hungarian order instead of copying English embedded subject-before-verb order. Standard embedded polar questions require the clitic -e, while vajon presents the issue as open wondering. The underlying preverbal organization is developed on the focus forms page.

StructureDirect patternEmbedded pattern
single wh-focusKi érkezik?Nem tudom, ki érkezik.
preverbal wh-clusterKi mit hoz?Írd fel, ki mit hoz.
postverbal additional whKi beszélt kivel?Kiderítjük, ki beszélt kivel.
polar -eIndul-e a járat? (formal)Nem tudom, indul-e a járat.

Direct and embedded wh-questions

Compare a direct question with the same question embedded after a request:

Mikor indul az utolsó busz?

When does the last bus leave?

Meg tudod mondani, mikor indul az utolsó busz?

Can you tell me when the last bus leaves?

In both clauses, mikor immediately precedes indul. Hungarian does not create a separate “indirect-question order”; it preserves the wh-focus relation inside the embedded clause. The matrix question in the second sentence is Meg tudod mondani…?, while mikor indul… supplies its content.

Nem emlékszem, hol parkoltunk.

I don’t remember where we parked.

Kiderült, ki hagyta nyitva az ablakot.

It became clear who had left the window open.

An embedded wh-clause can be an object, subject-like content, or complement selected by the matrix predicate. Its question word still receives the case required inside the embedded clause.

Mondd meg, kinek küldjem el a másolatot.

Tell me who I should send the copy to.

Kinek is dative because the internal frame is elküld valakinek valamit, regardless of the matrix imperative mondd meg.

💡
Build the embedded question locally before attaching it to the matrix: Kinek küldjem el?Nem tudom, kinek küldjem el. Do not recalculate the question word’s case from “know,” “ask,” or “tell.”

Hogy with embedded questions

Hungarian often embeds a wh-question directly, but hogy is also possible or favored with many speech predicates and discourse frames.

Nem tudom, ki vezeti holnap az ülést.

I don’t know who is chairing the meeting tomorrow.

Azt kérdezték, hogy ki vezeti holnap az ülést.

They asked who would chair the meeting tomorrow.

Hogy introduces the subordinate clause; ki marks it as a constituent question. This is not English that who. The two words have different jobs in Hungarian and can occur together naturally. With a short matrix such as nem tudom, omitting hogy is especially common.

An echo can even use independent hogy + wh after a surprising statement—Hogy hova költözött? “She moved where?”—but that is a marked repair construction, not the neutral template for every question.

One immediately preverbal focus

A single wh-expression occupies the focus position directly before the finite verb. Topics can stand before it; background material follows.

A pénzügyi igazgató mikor írja alá a szerződést?

When will the finance director sign the contract?

The topic a pénzügyi igazgató precedes question focus mikor. The definite verb írja follows immediately. Prefix alá is postverbal because the wh-phrase fills focus.

Nem világos, melyik ajánlatot fogadta el a bizottság.

It isn’t clear which offer the committee accepted.

Embedded melyik ajánlatot is focus before fogadta, and prefix el follows. English places the subject before the verb in an indirect question; Hungarian puts the wh-focus before the verb in direct and embedded clauses alike.

Multiple wh-questions and pair lists

When a question asks for a systematic mapping—each person paired with an item, time, or partner—multiple wh-phrases commonly form a preverbal cluster.

Ki melyik desszertet rendelte?

Who ordered which dessert?

Melyik csapat mikor mutatja be a tervét?

Which team is presenting its plan when?

These naturally invite a list: “Éva ordered the cake, Márk the strudel…” or “Team A presents at nine, Team B at ten…”. The wh-expression immediately adjacent to the verb occupies the narrow preverbal focus position; another distributive wh-expression can precede it within the broader preverbal field.

Case and definiteness remain visible. Melyik desszertet is an accusative selected alternative and triggers definite rendelte. Mikor is temporal and needs no case suffix.

💡
A preverbal wh-cluster normally asks for a mapping, not one accidental pair. If you ask Ki melyik szobában alszik?, expect an assignment list for the relevant people and rooms.

An additional postverbal wh-phrase

Hungarian also allows an “English-type” surface pattern in which one wh-phrase is preverbal and another remains after the verb.

Ki beszélt tegnap kivel?

Who spoke with whom yesterday?

Ki küldött meghívót kinek?

Who sent an invitation to whom?

This pattern can ask about a single relevant event or, in a suitable context, support a matching list. It does not have exactly the same neutral pair-list bias as a full preverbal cluster:

Ki kivel beszélt a fogadás után?

Who spoke with whom after the reception?

Here adjacent preverbal ki kivel strongly invites a person-by-person pairing. The alternation is genuinely difficult and sensitive to discourse. The safest active-use principle is: use a preverbal cluster when a complete mapping is wanted; use one preverbal wh-focus plus a postverbal wh when reconstructing a particular event or when the second unknown is less central.

Embedded multiple questions

The same patterns occur under matrix verbs.

Írd fel, ki melyik szemináriumon vesz részt.

Write down who is attending which seminar.

A rendőrség azt vizsgálja, ki találkozott aznap kivel.

The police are investigating who met with whom that day.

The first calls for a complete assignment and uses a preverbal wh-cluster. The second can reconstruct encounters from a particular day and leaves kivel postverbally. Neither clause uses English auxiliary inversion.

Vajon: open wondering

Vajon marks a question as something the speaker is considering or wondering about. It can precede the question or appear inside it without taking the wh-focus position itself.

Vajon ki küldhette ezt a névtelen üzenetet?

I wonder who could have sent this anonymous message.

A szakértők sem tudják, vajon mikor ér véget a vizsgálat.

Even the experts do not know when the investigation will end.

Vajon is neutral in reflective speech and common in (formal) exposition. It does not mean that the speaker expects agreement; that is the domain of ugye. Its position is flexible, while the actual wh-expression retains its relationship to the verb.

Embedded polar questions with -e

When the embedded issue has a yes-or-no answer, standard Hungarian marks it with -e, attached by a hyphen to the finite verb or to the nonverbal predicate that carries the clause’s predication.

Megkérdezték, hogy elkészült-e már a szerződés.

They asked whether the contract was ready yet.

Nem világos, szükség van-e további adatokra.

It is unclear whether further data are needed.

Ellenőrizd, hogy helyes-e a számlaszám.

Check whether the account number is correct.

In elkészült-e, the clitic follows the finite verb. In van-e, it follows the overt copula. With present-tense third-person adjectival predication, there is no copula, so it attaches to helyes. Even after negation, edited standard keeps it on the finite verb: nem érkezett-e meg, not nem-e érkezett meg. Never attach it to hogy.

In direct speech, Elkészült-e a szerződés? is (formal), elevated, or deliberately explicit; everyday conversation generally uses intonation: Elkészült a szerződés? The -e version normally has a falling contour rather than the rise–fall of the intonation-only polar question. In embedded polar questions, -e is required in standard Hungarian and is not stylistically elevated.

Vajon and -e can co-occur:

Nem tudjuk, vajon elfogadják-e a módosítást.

We do not know whether they will accept the amendment.

Here vajon marks open deliberation and -e overtly identifies the embedded polar question. By contrast, ugye cannot combine with interrogative -e in the same clause.

Intonation and punctuation

An embedded question does not automatically make the entire sentence a direct question. Compare:

Nem tudom, mikor zár a pénztár.

I don’t know when the ticket office closes.

Tudod, mikor zár a pénztár?

Do you know when the ticket office closes?

The first is a statement and ends with a period. The second has a polar matrix question and ends with a question mark. In speech, the final contour belongs to the whole utterance; the embedded wh-clause does not receive an independent direct-question contour.

Segmentation exercise

Analyze:

Nem tudom, vajon ki melyik javaslatot fogadta el.

I don’t know who accepted which proposal.

  1. Nem tudom is the negative matrix clause.
  2. The comma marks the subordinate-clause boundary.
  3. Vajon frames the issue as open uncertainty.
  4. Ki melyik javaslatot is a multiple-wh cluster requesting a mapping.
  5. Melyik javaslatot is the expression adjacent to fogadta and triggers definite conjugation.
  6. Prefix el follows the verb because the wh-cluster occupies the preverbal focus field.

Common Mistakes

❌ Nem tudom, hogy-e megérkezett a futár.

Incorrect — interrogative -e never attaches to the complementizer hogy.

✅ Nem tudom, hogy megérkezett-e a futár.

I don’t know whether the courier has arrived.

❌ Meg tudod mondani, mikor a gyógyszertár nyit?

Incorrect English-influenced order — the subject cannot separate wh-focus from the verb.

✅ Meg tudod mondani, mikor nyit a gyógyszertár?

Can you tell me when the pharmacy opens?

❌ Nem emlékszem, mikor indult-e a vonat.

Incorrect — an ordinary embedded wh-question does not also take polar -e.

✅ Nem emlékszem, mikor indult a vonat.

I don’t remember when the train left.

❌ Azt kérdezték, ki elvitte a csomagot.

Incorrect — the prefix cannot remain before the verb when ki occupies preverbal focus.

✅ Azt kérdezték, ki vitte el a csomagot.

They asked who took the parcel away.

Key Takeaways

  • Embedded wh-questions preserve the local wh-before-verb focus order of direct questions.
  • Hogy may introduce an embedded wh-question because it and the wh-expression perform different functions.
  • Preverbal wh-clusters favor pair-list mappings; an additional postverbal wh-expression can suit event reconstruction or a less central unknown.
  • Vajon expresses open wondering and does not replace the actual wh-phrase or -e.
  • In embedded polar questions, hyphenated -e attaches to the finite verb or nonverbal predicate, never to hogy.
  • English subject–auxiliary inversion has no Hungarian counterpart; morphology, focus order, and prosody mark the question.
