Conversation and academic prose both guide an audience through incomplete information, but they do so under different time pressures. A speaker may use hát, szóval, or izé while planning and repairing in real time. A writer or prepared presenter can use egyrészt–másrészt, összefoglalva, and explicit metadiscourse to expose the order of evidence and conclusions.
The forms page describes their architecture. Here the organizing question is what task the marker performs in its setting. Unlabeled examples are neutral modern standard Hungarian.
Gaining time without surrendering the turn
Turn-initial hát can signal that an answer requires thought, qualification, or tact. It lets the speaker begin responding before the proposition is ready.
– Megéri felújítani ezt a régi házat? – Hát... attól függ, milyen állapotban van a tető.
‘Is this old house worth renovating?’ ‘Well... it depends on the condition of the roof.’
The pause and continuation project a nonbinary answer. A brisk falling Hát persze! would do something different: it presents agreement as obvious and may even become ironic. Marker meaning therefore depends on its location and prosody, not on a permanent gloss well.
Planning can be silent. In a formal interview, a short pause often sounds more controlled than repeated hát. A speaker who needs explicit time can say Hadd gondoljam végig “Let me think it through” or Erre nehéz röviden válaszolni “That is hard to answer briefly.” These phrases tell the audience why the turn continues.
Retrieving a missing word and repairing it
Izé holds a lexical slot during spontaneous word search (informal). It is natural among familiars but can suggest carelessness when a name, role, or sensitive category deserves precision.
Tedd a csomagot arra az izére... a mérlegre!
Put the parcel on that thing... the scale! (informal word search)
The speaker replaces the placeholder with a mérlegre, preserving the sublative case required by the direction. If the word remains inaccessible, a descriptive repair is more useful than repeated izé:
Nem jut eszembe a neve; arra az eszközre gondolok, amellyel a páratartalmat mérjük.
I can't remember its name; I mean the device we use to measure humidity.
In a prepared presentation, izé is highly conspicuous. Use pontosabban to narrow a statement, úgy értem to reformulate, or simply pause and restart.
The sample was representative—or, more precisely, representative by age.
The repair matters substantively: the second phrase retracts an overbroad inference. Discourse repair can therefore organize evidence, not merely pronunciation.
Resuming a thread with szóval
After an interruption or digression, szóval recovers the main conversational line.
Szóval, mielőtt bejött a futár, arról beszéltünk, ki vállalja a pénteki ügyeletet.
So, before the courier came in, we were discussing who would take Friday's on-call shift.
It can also state the practical upshot of several facts:
A javításhoz nincs alkatrész, az új készülék pedig holnap megérkezik. Szóval nem érdemes tovább várnunk.
There are no parts for the repair, and the new device arrives tomorrow. So there is no point in waiting any longer.
The second use resembles tehát, but szóval retains an interactional flavor: the speaker is gathering the discussion into a usable conclusion. Formal argument often prefers tehát, következésképpen, or a source-sensitive frame. Casual speech may use szóval repeatedly while planning; edited prose should choose the exact relation.
Pairing two dimensions with egyrészt–másrészt
Use the pair when two considerations have parallel weight. They may conflict, as in a decision, or reinforce one another.
On the one hand, the apartment is close to the university; on the other, it is too small for two of us to work in comfortably.
A továbbképzés egyrészt frissíti a szakmai tudást, másrészt kapcsolatépítésre is lehetőséget ad.
The training course both updates professional knowledge and provides an opportunity for networking.
The first pair weighs a benefit against a drawback. The second builds a cumulative case. English on the one hand/on the other hand often suggests opposition more strongly, so do not infer that Hungarian másrészt must reverse polarity.
The first member is sometimes omitted when the discourse already establishes one side, but a fully planned paragraph is easier to follow with the explicit pair. Do not use egyrészt–másrészt merely for chronological steps; először–aztán handles sequence.
Previewing and navigating planned discourse
Formal metadiscourse gives readers or listeners a map of the text. Each expression makes a different promise.
In what follows, I first describe the data-collection method and then analyze the results. (academic)
A következőkben points forward, while először ... majd previews internal sequence. This is useful only if the text actually follows the map.
As we saw in the previous chapter, the relationship between the two variables is not linear. (academic)
This backward reference treats the earlier analysis as shared evidence. Érdemes kiemelni, hogy... raises one result's salience; ami X-et illeti selects a topic; az eredmények alapján names the basis for inference.
Az interjúk alapján három visszatérő nehézség azonosítható.
On the basis of the interviews, three recurring difficulties can be identified. (academic)
Academic impersonality is a rhetorical option, not an absolute ban on first person. A következőkben bemutatom “I present below” clearly announces author action; a következőkben bemutatásra kerül is heavier and can obscure agency. Choose the form that makes the text's evidence and actions easiest to audit.
Emphasizing versus proving
Érdemes kiemelni tells the audience that a point deserves attention; it does not prove that point. Fontos megjegyezni similarly marks authorial evaluation. Evidence requires a separate source or reasoning frame.
Érdemes kiemelni, hogy a lemorzsolódás a kontrollcsoportban is csökkent.
It is worth emphasizing that dropout also decreased in the control group. (academic)
On the basis of the available data, however, it cannot be determined what caused the change. (academic)
The first manages salience. The second limits inference. Combining those tasks transparently prevents the signpost from masquerading as evidence.
Summarizing at the right scale
Összefoglalva looks backward and compresses what has already been established. It can summarize a presentation, a section, or a multi-turn discussion.
To summarize, the system became faster, but the new interface resulted in more errors. (formal)
A summary should preserve the balance of the source material. Introducing a new argument after összefoglalva violates the audience's expectation. Végezetül instead announces the final planned point; végül may describe the eventual outcome of events. These neighboring markers should not be collapsed into English finally.
A short dialogue
– Szóval holnap mutatjuk be az új tervet? – Hát, nem egészen. Holnap csak a költségbecslést ismertetjük.
‘So we're presenting the new plan tomorrow?’ ‘Well, not quite. Tomorrow we're only presenting the cost estimate.’
– Értem. És a teljes terv mikor kerül sorra? – A jövő heti ülésen. Vagyis addig még javíthatunk rajta.
‘I see. And when will the complete plan be discussed?’ ‘At next week's meeting. In other words, we can still revise it until then.’
Initial szóval checks the upshot; hesitant hát claims a qualified-answer turn; nem egészen introduces correction; vagyis draws the practical implication. The markers organize turns and stance as well as logic.
Informal and formal comparison
Well, so the problem was that the, um... connector didn't fit the cable. (informal spontaneous speech)
Összefoglalva: a meghibásodást a nem megfelelő csatlakozó okozta.
To summarize, the malfunction was caused by an incompatible connector. (formal report)
The first exposes planning and word retrieval. The second removes that production history and foregrounds the result. Neither register is inherently more truthful, but each serves its audience differently.
Common Mistakes
❌ Egyrészt csökkent a fogyasztás, másrész nőtt a teljesítmény.
Incorrect paired form — the conventional second marker is másrészt.
✅ Egyrészt csökkent a fogyasztás, másrészt nőtt a teljesítmény.
On the one hand consumption decreased; on the other, performance increased.
❌ Össze foglalva: három fő problémát találtunk.
Incorrect spelling — the adjacent prefix and participle are written together in this signpost.
✅ Összefoglalva: három fő problémát találtunk.
To summarize, we found three main problems. (formal)
⚠️ A következőkben bemutatásra kerül a második kérdés elemzése.
Grammatical but needlessly heavy here: the nominalized impersonal construction obscures the author's action.
✅ A következőkben a második kérdést elemzem.
In what follows, I analyze the second question. (academic)
⚠️ A minta reprezentatív, izé... csak életkor szerint.
Possible in spontaneous speech, but izé neither explicitly marks retrospective refinement nor suits a planned academic formulation.
The sample is representative—more precisely, representative only by age. (academic)
Key Takeaways
- Hát buys planning time or frames a qualified response; prosody determines its turn effect.
- Izé holds a lexical slot (informal), while an explicit repair protects precision.
- Szóval resumes a thread or states an interactional upshot rather than encoding every kind of result.
- Egyrészt–másrészt balances two argumentative dimensions, not chronological stages.
- Formal metadiscourse should truthfully preview structure, identify evidence, mark salience, or summarize.
- Discourse markers organize evidence, stance, and turn allocation as well as logical relations.
