Semivowels य र ल व

The traditional Devanagari group य र ल व is called the “semivowel” or antaḥstha group, romanized y, r, l, v. In modern phonetic terms, य and व often behave like glides, while र and ल are liquids; the traditional label groups them by their place in the alphabet rather than claiming that all four are pronounced identically.

This page focuses on spelling, shapes, and dependable word reading. Full phonetic conditioning and connected-speech variation belong on the pages for Hindi r sounds and व between English v and w. All unlabelled examples use neutral contemporary Standard Hindi.

The four letters

LetterWith inherent aFixed romanizationExample
यyayयहाँ yahā̃, “here”
रrarरात rāt, “night”
लlalलोग log, “people”
वvavवहाँ vahā̃, “there”

Bare letters include inherent a. Vowel signs replace it: ये ye, री rī, लो lo, वू vū. A virama suppresses it and allows each letter to participate in a conjunct, though र has especially distinctive shapes.

यह रास्ता बाज़ार तक जाता है।

yah rāstā bāzār tak jātā hai.

This road goes to the market.

रात को यहाँ बहुत शांति रहती है।

rāt ko yahā̃ bahut śānti rahtī hai.

It is very peaceful here at night.

लाल बैग मेरा है।

lāl baig merā hai.

The red bag is mine.

वह लड़की मेरी बहन है।

vah laṛkī merī bahan hai.

That girl is my sister.

💡
The romanization is deliberately fixed: य is y, र is r, ल is l, and व is v. Do not change the spelling or romanization every time an English speaker hears a slightly different sound.

Minimal contrasts between the letters

The pair यही yahī “this very one/exactly this” and वही vahī “that same one/exactly that” differs only in य versus व. It is a useful minimal spelling contrast because both forms are extremely common. “Right here” and “right there” are instead यहीं yahīṃ and वहीं vahīṃ, with nasalization.

यही रास्ता सही है।

yahī rāstā sahī hai.

This is the right route.

वही रास्ता आज बंद है।

vahī rāstā āj band hai.

That same route is closed today.

The pair राख rākh “ash” and लाख lākh “one hundred thousand” similarly isolates र versus ल.

चूल्हे की राख अभी गर्म है।

cūlhe kī rākh abhī garm hai.

The ash from the stove is still hot.

इस घर की कीमत पचास लाख रुपये है।

is ghar kī kīmat pacās lākh rupaye hai.

This house costs five million rupees.

English r, l, y, v, and w invite misleading approximations. The Hindi letters are contrastive categories in their own system; English spelling cannot decide which one a Hindi word contains.

The variable sound but stable spelling of व

Depending on neighboring vowels, speaker, and style, व may sound closer to an English v, an English w, or an intermediate labiodental glide. Standard Devanagari does not alternate letters to record those contextual realizations, and this guide romanizes all of them consistently as v.

वह वहाँ पाँच वर्ष रहा।

vah vahā̃ pā̃c varṣ rahā.

He lived there for five years. (formal use of वर्ष)

In everyday speech, साल sāl is more neutral than Sanskritic/formal वर्ष varṣ for “year.” Register choice changes the word, but it does not change the identity of व inside वर्ष.

The pronouns यह/वह are commonly realized as ye/vo in informal conversation, and colloquial writing may use ये/वो. That is a specific high-frequency pronoun pattern, not a rule that turns every य into e or every व into o.

💡
Keep three things separate: standard spelling यह/वह, common conversational forms ये/वो, and the broad phonetic range of व. They overlap in speech but are not interchangeable spelling rules.

र changes shape in conjuncts

When र combines with another consonant, its visible shape depends on its position. A preceding र् may appear as repha above the next consonant, as in कर्म karm “work/deed.” A following र may appear as rakar, as in प्रेम prem “love” or ट्रेन ṭren “train.”

मेरा कर्म ही मेरी पहचान है।

merā karm hī merī pahcān hai.

My actions are my identity. (formal/aphoristic)

प्रेम पर लिखी यह कविता बहुत सरल है।

prem par likhī yah kavitā bahut saral hai.

This poem about love is very simple.

These are font-shaped conjuncts, not new letters. Type the logical consonants and virama; do not paste a look-alike raised mark. The repha and rakar page covers every shape in detail.

य, ल, and व in conjuncts

Following य commonly creates forms such as क्या kyā, प्यार pyār, and ध्यान dhyān. Half ल appears in spellings such as दिल्ली dillī, while व occurs in स्वागत svāgat.

आपका हमारे घर में स्वागत है।

āpkā hamāre ghar meṃ svāgat hai.

Welcome to our home.

क्या तुम दिल्ली वाली ट्रेन से आओगे?

kyā tum dillī vālī ṭren se āoge?

Will you come on the train to Delhi?

Conjunct parsing matters because a visible cluster may pack several logical characters into one shape. Alphabet memorization without virama knowledge cannot recover ky, py, dhy, sv, or the special forms of r.

Grammatical work done around the consonants

The productive -वाला construction changes to -वाली/-वाले for agreement and case. The consonants व-ल stay stable while the vowel signs carry the grammatical contrast.

सामने वाला कमरा बंद है, लेकिन सामने वाली दुकान खुली है।

sāmne vālā kamrā band hai, lekin sāmne vālī dukān khulī hai.

The room in front is closed, but the shop in front is open.

Hindi readers use the stable consonantal material to recognize the construction, then read the ending for agreement. English often expresses the same idea with an invariant phrase such as “the one in front.”

Schwa deletion and lexical knowledge

Bare semivowels do not each guarantee a spoken a. करना is karnā, not karanā; समय is samay, not samaya; कमरा is kamrā, not kamarā. In कर्म and प्रेम, however, a virama explicitly creates the r cluster.

This is the crucial reading insight: fluent Devanagari reading combines vocabulary and morphology with letter recognition. A reader must know whether a cluster is written, produced by schwa deletion, or shaped specially because र participates in it.

A short reading line

यश रात वाली रेल से भोपाल गया।

yaś rāt vālī rel se bhopāl gayā.

Yash went to Bhopal on the night train.

The line includes य, र, ल, and व in ordinary words. Read the written vowel signs, then apply whole-word knowledge: यश is yaś, not yaśa, and भोपाल is bhopāl, not bhopāla.

Unicode-safe spelling

Use genuine य, र, ल, and व in NFC text. Do not insert Latin y, r, l, v, or w into a Devanagari word. Type virama in the logical order for conjuncts and let the font form repha, rakar, half य, half ल, or half व. Visual similarity in one font is not character identity.

Common Mistakes

1. Confusing the shapes of य and ज

❌ जह मेरी किताब है।

Incorrect — the pronoun ‘this’ is यह with य, not जह.

✅ यह मेरी किताब है।

yah merī kitāb hai.

This is my book.

2. Confusing व with ब

❌ बह बहाँ रहता है।

Incorrect for ‘He lives there’ — वह and वहाँ begin with व.

✅ वह वहाँ रहता है।

vah vahā̃ rahtā hai.

He lives there.

3. Switching the fixed romanization of व to w

❌ वह वहाँ काम करता है।

Incorrect in this guide as wah wahā̃ kām kartā hai — the fixed learner romanization writes व as v.

✅ वह वहाँ काम करता है।

vah vahā̃ kām kartā hai.

He works there.

4. Inserting an inherent vowel inside a conjunct

❌ यह कविता परेम के बारे में है।

Incorrect spelling — प्रेम begins with the conjunct प्र, not the sequence परे.

✅ यह कविता प्रेम के बारे में है।

yah kavitā prem ke bāre meṃ hai.

This poem is about love.

5. Pronouncing every final inherent vowel

❌ आज मेरे पास समय है।

Incorrect reading as āja mere pāsa samaya hai — आज, पास, and समय have no final spoken a.

✅ आज मेरे पास समय है।

āj mere pās samay hai.

I have time today.

Key Takeaways

  • The traditional semivowel group is consistently romanized y, r, l, v.
  • व has a broad modern pronunciation range, but spelling and guide romanization remain stable.
  • र forms repha and rakar; य, ल, and व also participate in conjuncts that must be parsed logically.
  • Agreement endings, lexical register, and schwa deletion make fluent reading more than alphabet recitation.
