Labial consonants प फ ब भ म

The letters प फ ब भ म form the labial row, romanized p, ph, b, bh, m. They are made with the lips: प/फ are voiceless, ब/भ are voiced, and म is their matching nasal. Aspiration distinguishes प from फ and ब from भ.

This page teaches the written letters and dependable word reading. Full phonetic conditioning, breathy-voice detail, and connected-speech effects belong on the pages about aspiration and breathy consonants. Unless labeled otherwise, examples use neutral contemporary Standard Hindi.

The five letters

LetterWith inherent aCore contrastExample
पpavoiceless, unaspiratedपानी pānī, “water”
फphavoiceless, aspiratedफल phal, “fruit”
बbavoiced, unaspiratedबाहर bāhar, “outside”
भbhavoiced, aspirated/breathyभाई bhāī, “brother”
मmalabial nasalमकान makān, “house/building”

The isolated readings include inherent a. Vowel signs replace it: पी pī, फे phe, बो bo, भू bhū. A virama cancels it, as in ब्ब in डिब्बा ḍibbā.

पानी की बोतल मेज़ पर है।

pānī kī botal mez par hai.

The bottle of water is on the table.

फल धोकर खाओ।

phal dhokar khāo.

Wash the fruit before eating it.

बच्चा बाहर खेल रहा है।

baccā bāhar khel rahā hai.

The child is playing outside.

मेरा भाई अभी बाज़ार में है।

merā bhāī abhī bāzār meṃ hai.

My brother is at the market right now.

💡
In this romanization, ph is aspirated फ and bh is aspirated/breathy भ. Each corresponds to one Devanagari letter, not to a sequence of प or ब plus separately pronounced h.

Aspiration creates lexical contrasts

The words पल pal “moment” and फल phal “fruit/result” differ only in प versus फ. This minimal spelling contrast shows that aspiration can change meaning.

एक पल रुको, मैं भी आ रहा हूँ।

ek pal ruko, maĩ bhī ā rahā hū̃.

Wait a moment; I'm coming too.

नाश्ते में एक फल खा लो।

nāśte meṃ ek phal khā lo.

Have a piece of fruit for breakfast.

The voiced pair ब/भ follows the same system. English has b, but it does not normally contrast plain b with a breathy aspirated partner as separate words. Learn भ as its own consonant.

मेरे भाई ने मुझे किताब भेजी।

mere bhāī ne mujhe kitāb bhejī.

My brother sent me a book.

बारिश के बाद भी मैं बाहर नहीं गया।

bāriś ke bād bhī maĩ bāhar nahīṃ gayā.

Even after the rain, I didn't go outside.

फ is not the same letter as फ़

Native and long-established Hindi words such as फल phal, फूल phūl “flower,” and फिर phir “again/then” use फ. The nukta letter फ़ represents f in loans such as फ़ोन fon and सफ़र safar “journey.”

मुझे शाम को फ़ोन करना।

mujhe śām ko fon karnā.

Call me in the evening.

इस सफ़र में काफ़ी समय लगेगा।

is safar meṃ kāfī samay lagegā.

This journey will take quite a while.

Nukta omission is common in informal typing, and some speakers pronounce फ and फ़ alike in some words. That variation does not erase the careful spelling contrast. This guide preserves the nukta in words conventionally written with f; the nukta-consonant page treats the broader system.

💡
Do not infer spelling from one speaker's realization alone. फल remains फल and फ़ोन remains फ़ोन in careful spelling even where the audible contrast is weakened.

फ and भ are single Unicode letters

Romanization uses two characters for ph and bh, but Devanagari uses single फ and भ. The sequences प्ह and ब्ह are clusters, not alternate spellings. Type the actual letter, then add any vowel sign.

In संभव sambhav “possible,” भ is followed by its inherent vowel; it is not ब + ह. The preceding anusvara has a separate role.

शायद यह काम आज संभव नहीं है।

śāyad yah kām āj sambhav nahīṃ hai.

Perhaps this work isn't possible today.

Explicit म and homorganic anusvara

Hindi writes an ordinary m with म in words such as मकान makān, कमरा kamrā, and समय samay. Before a labial stop, anusvara is pronounced at the same labial place and romanized m: लंबा lambā, संपर्क sampark, संभव sambhav.

यह पुल बहुत लंबा है।

yah pul bahut lambā hai.

This bridge is very long.

मेरा उनसे अभी संपर्क नहीं हो पा रहा।

merā unse abhī sampark nahīṃ ho pā rahā.

I haven't been able to contact them yet.

The Devanagari remains anusvara; the romanization shows its homorganic nasal. Do not replace ं with म् merely to mirror the pronunciation. Conversely, the nasalization sign in मैं maĩ “I” is not the consonant म at the end of the word.

Labials inside grammatical forms

The adjective लंबा changes to लंबी and लंबे according to agreement and case, while its labial consonant and anusvara spelling stay stable.

लंबा पुल और लंबी सड़क दोनों नए हैं।

lambā pul aur lambī saṛak donoṃ nae haiṃ.

The long bridge and the long road are both new.

English leaves “long” unchanged. Hindi uses the vowel signs ा/ी/े as grammatical endings, so letter recognition supports agreement reading without making the consonantal stem change.

Schwa deletion and complete-word reading

मतलब is matlab, not matalaba; भारत is bhārat, not bhārata; कम is kam, not kama. In डिब्बा, by contrast, ब् explicitly suppresses a vowel before the following ब.

These patterns show why Devanagari is not a simple one-letter-one-sound code. Fluent reading combines letter values with conjunct parsing, lexical familiarity, and morphological structure.

A short reading line

पापा फल और मिठाई बाहर बाँट रहे हैं।

pāpā phal aur miṭhāī bāhar bā̃ṭ rahe haiṃ.

Dad is distributing fruit and sweets outside.

This line uses all five row letters. Read ph and bh as single consonants, preserve the nasalized vowel of बाँट, and omit the final inherent vowel in फल.

Unicode-safe spelling

Use genuine प, फ, ब, भ, and म in NFC text. Keep the nukta in फ़ where careful spelling requires it. Do not build फ or भ with ह, replace Devanagari strokes with Latin p or m, or rewrite anusvara as an explicit म merely because the pronunciation is homorganic.

Common Mistakes

1. Dropping aspiration in a minimal pair

❌ नाश्ते में एक पल खा लो।

Incorrect for ‘Eat a fruit’ — पल means ‘moment’; fruit is फल.

✅ नाश्ते में एक फल खा लो।

nāśte meṃ ek phal khā lo.

Have a piece of fruit for breakfast.

2. Constructing फ from प्ह

❌ यह प्हल मीठा है।

Incorrect spelling — फ is one letter; प्ह is a consonant cluster.

✅ यह फल मीठा है।

yah phal mīṭhā hai.

This fruit is sweet.

3. Dropping aspiration from भ

❌ मेरा बाई अभी बाहर है।

Incorrect for ‘my brother’ — brother is भाई with aspirated भ.

✅ मेरा भाई अभी बाहर है।

merā bhāī abhī bāhar hai.

My brother is outside right now.

4. Adding nukta to native फल

❌ यह फ़ल मीठा है।

Incorrect careful spelling — the native word फल uses फ ph, not nukta फ़ f.

✅ यह फल मीठा है।

yah phal mīṭhā hai.

This fruit is sweet.

5. Romanizing anusvara generically before ब

❌ यह पुल बहुत लंबा है।

Incorrect reading notation as laṃbā — before ब, anusvara is the homorganic m.

✅ यह पुल बहुत लंबा है।

yah pul bahut lambā hai.

This bridge is very long.

Key Takeaways

  • प/फ and ब/भ contrast aspiration; फ and भ are single Devanagari letters.
  • Careful spelling distinguishes native फ ph from nukta फ़ f, even where pronunciation varies.
  • Anusvara before a labial stop is pronounced and romanized m without being rewritten as म.
  • Agreement endings, conjuncts, and schwa deletion make complete-word knowledge essential for fluent reading.
